Fit Runner in Flight

The theme of this Friday 5 is "Things in my gym bag". I have to be honest, I don't  have a gym bag because  with my crazy schedule of flying all the time, I don't go to the gym.  But shhhhh don't tell anybody.  When I  have some longer overnights at work, I do try to go to the fitness center. So for now I will share 5 things that I always carry in my roller board!

Gps- I am so happy that it has finally been nice everywhere I go for work. I have been getting better runs in with this beautiful weather. As long as I have my gps I know the distance I am going, even if it is up and down industrial roads. Sometimes I luck out and find a great running path near our hotel.

Ipod- This one I know can go both ways, but for me I need my ipod when I go for a run. When I do run with friends I never wear it, but when I am traveling I am also running solo so my ipod is a must.

Ipad- As much as I love going outside for my runs sometimes there is inclimate weather and I am not able to. That's where my Ipad comes in handy. I can take it to the gym with me and prop it up on the treadmill, watch a tv episode I have downloaded, and before you know it, my run is finished.  I also have great workout videos downloaded that I can do right in my hotel room.

The stick- As much as I love my foam roller it is not packing friendly. So I pack the next best thing, The Stick. After my workout I use this and I don't feel as sore the next day at work. I know many people have questioned this and YES, the Stick can go in your carry on luggage!

Resistance bands- There are so many great strength moves you can do with these bands. And they are so easy to pack. It's another great workout you can do right in your hotel room.

There is no excuse you can't get a great workout in while traveling. Do you pack any of these things while traveling?

Is anyone Traveling this weekend?  Have a great Friday Friends!

  1. No travel for me this weekend but C is at her college reunion. I will be doing a long run with buddies from my running group tomorrow. By the way, I also use the "stick". It is a great tool in addition to a foam roller!

  2. I'm traveling to a work conference in Orlando this weekend, but I'm close enough to drive, so no chance of running into you on a plane! :) I'm taking my stick with me and hoping to find a good place to run while I'm there!

  6. I wondered about the Stick last year because going through TSA at DFW, I got stopped and they wanted to look at it. I was able to keep it and TSA in Portland didn't blink at it.

    1. I have heard that some TSA has stopped passengers to see what it was, but it is definitely allowed.

  7. I like to foam roll after runs, but I've tried the stick before and was surprised how different it felt. I haven't plunged into purchasing one yet because I'm not sure I would use it consistently. It felt good when I got to try one though!

  8. Always great to take that stuff with you. I'm always in favor of using tech to compliment it.

  10. I'm always nervous to watch my ipad while on the treadmill. At my gym, the treadmills don't all have one of those book holder things, so I'm scared it'll fall, then I'd trip and it'd be one big mess. ;) When I travel, I pretty much always bring my running gear, so I made a zippered cotton bag to put my shoes in so they don't touch the rest of my clothes. :)

    1. I know what you mean. Some treadmills don't have that spot to place iPad on. That's where my iPod comes in play or hopefully they have a working tv in the gym. Great idea for you shoes. I usually just put them in a plastic bag.

    2. If you send me some measurements of your shoes, I'd be happy to make you a bag for them. :)

  14. That's so great that you have the motivation to workout in new towns and take these things with you. I've never tried the stick, but keep meaning to look into getting myself one. No traveling for me this weekend, and for once, no races. Whatever will I do with myself? haha. Sleep in! Have a great weekend!

  15. Exercising while traveling is tough! So kudos for sticking to some kind of regimen. Resistance bands are great because they are small and light - perfect for on the go. I have something similar on my blog today.

  21. I need to buy a stick like that. I just have my foam roller and you're right, it isn't that travel-friendly. :S I love how you have your 26.2 on your luggage. ;) Mine's on the bumper of my car, along with two other running stickers, lol.

  30. I need to work out more while traveling. I'd bring my Nike+ watch to make sure I can schedule a run. Have you ever had trouble bringing the stick in the airport?

  31. Really good idea about taking your iPad to the gym and watching something while on the treadmill! I use my iPad a lot to watch fitness videos online at home.

  32. Great list. Some of these are on my wish list. Still need to invest in a GPS watch and I know I should already have a foam roller / stick, but just haven't done it yet.

  33. The Stick is a must when traveling - though I have run in to problems occasionally with it at airports. I wonder if it depends on the airline?

  34. I have a travel size stick for carryon, as well as a resistance band, stretch rope, foot rubz ball and trigger point ball (those always travel). When we checked bags, DH brought his big foam roller as well and the black trigger point stick!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oooh, the stick! I'm thinking about buying a travel sized one as well as a travel sized trigger point roller for my upcoming Florida extravaganza!

  36. There's some great stuff in your bag! It's been a long time since I've pulled out my resistance bands - I think I'll go toss one in my bag right now. Thanks for the reminder!

  37. I got a stick for traveling, too! It seemed ridiculous to keep toting around the foam roller haha!
