My new place and a treadmill for it!

For those of you that don't know, I recently moved to the Philadelphia area. (Anyone live close?)  Such a big change from Virginia Beach. Although there are many things I will miss about living at the oceanfront, there are other things that I am excited about. In Virginia I lived in a small condo. Now in Philadelphia, I moved to a three bedroom house with a den. I knew this would be a perfect space for a gym. I already have an exercise bike, but I knew I wanted to get a treadmill for training for my upcoming marathons, especially since it will be much cooler here in the winter. Even now, it's been so hot to get runs completed outside if you're not up first thing in the morning.

This is my new workout space all put together.

I've already started to hang some of my race medals!

I've done a little bit of research on some treadmills,  but when it came down to it, I knew I didn't need anything too fancy with bells and whistles. Just the basics, and one with an incline adjustment. (I had got one years ago, but had left it at my parent's house). I decided to get the Gold's Gym 420. The reviews that I read all said it was great for the price. That works for me! Anxiously awaiting my treadmill to come, I was like a little kid on Christmas morning:) It finally arrived right on schedule. Some of the reviews I read said that their delivery man even put it together for them. But unfortunately,  I had no such luck. The assembly wasn't too hard though, but you definitely need 2 people to put it together. Good thing I had some help.

There are so many mixed feelings on treadmill training. Of course there is nothing like a great run outdoors, but that's not always an option.  For me, I'd rather use my treadmill and do my workout, then not do anything at all. Now there are no excuses for not getting my runs in! I have used it a few times since I got it and it does the job! I didn't think it was too loud while I was running. My only complaint ( which is just me being picky and I knew this when I bought it) is the display screen is small and it doesn't light up so it's not as easy to read while you're running. Which is not that big of a deal because I am watching my Sex and the City anyways and the time flies by.  ~L

How do u feel about treadmills?  Do you have one that you train on?  Do you live in the Philly area?

  1. I love my treadmill! It's my only option for running. I prop a portable DVD player on the display and watch movies & old TV episodes.

    1. Same here. I use my ipad to watch shows. The time goes by so much faster when you do this.

  2. I made peace with the treadmill years ago when I moved to Dallas and got back into shape. It's not ideal, but when it's summer, I can run inside.

    1. It's perfect for inclimate weather, too hot or too cold. At least you know it gets the job done!

  3. I've been wanting a treadmill for awhile. It would be so helpful during the summer heat. Philly sounds like a big change from Virginia! I've never been to Philly, but would love to visit and see the history someday.

    1. Yes it is a big change. I am slowly getting use to it. Haven't been downtown to experience the city yet. I am sure that'll be fun!

  4. Congrats on a new place and a new change :) I don't have a treadmill. If the weather is bad I will run on one at the gym. Otherwise I do enjoy the outside. Although I have a feeling if it was right there and super convenient, I would run on it a lot in the winter when it is freezing! Actually I am pretty sure it would slowly turn me into a fair weather runner. :)

    1. Thanks! Yes it is super convenient. It's hard not to use it when you pass by it all the time in your house. I have been so used to it now everytime I go outside I can't seem to get a decent run in because of the humidity.

  5. While some might not like them I think they definitely have their place and I can't think of a better way to get a feel for pacing than running in a machine that actually keeps you at whatever pace you want. Plus, running right next to your bling has got to be amazing motivation.

    1. Yes I agree! Although I do seem to go much slower on the treadmill for some reason.

  6. I've been researching treadmills for months, I am going to buy one (the NE winters are rough to run in) but I just haven't decided what I want. Well, I KNOW what I want, but my husband would kill me if I got the Boston Marathon treadmill! HA! Enjoy it and good luck in Philly, its a great city!

    1. Haha yeah. There were so many other great ones I'd live to have. Vut this was the most economical and it does the job just fine. Thanks. I have yet to experience the city yet.

  7. I grew up in the Philly area and my family is still there so I visit a lot of weekends! They have a great running community with lots of awesome races. I love running in Fairmount Park along the river near the art museum. Philadelphia will always have a piece of my heart-it's a great city!

  8. I don't mind treadmill running for shorter distances but anything over three miles and I start to get bored. There needs to be a balance.

  9. Welcome to my neck of the woods! I'm on the Jersey side of the bridge but I love Philly and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do. It would be great to meet up at some point! xo

    1. Yes it would. I have a friend in cherry hill I go to see sometimes. Is that close to you?

  10. I had to get used to the treadmill two years ago when we moved to North Dakota. Running in the winter is impossible. -25 wind chill? No, thank you. In the summer, you have to battle bird-like mosquitoes, so I find myself on the treadmill more often than I'm outdoors now, too. I try not to let it get me down. I wish I had a spot for a treadmill in my house.

    1. Runs are always so much better and go quicker when you are enjoying the outdoors. Of course when the weather is tolerable. I am so getting my moneys worth out of my treadmill so far.

  11. One thing that I have learned from my mom's treadmill experiences is always to get one with a good warranty and service plan. They seem to break all the time! And treadmills are necessary "evils"--having lived in the South and in Chicago, unless I want to get a hamster wheel, that is my option. But I love your wall of glory next to the mill. Remind it what it needs to work for ;)

    1. Thanks. Yes that's why I hung them there:) I did not get an extended warrenty. Lets hope this lasts awhile.

  12. Great post! Your space looks awesome! I have a little gym area in the basement and love it! Sometimes on beautiful days I still choose to run inside because that way I can watch my son while he plays or catchup on tv shows I don't have time for otherwise. Plus, I find my speed work is easier on a treadmill ha ha :)

    1. Thanks. Yes it's easier to adjust the setting for speed work on the treadmill. I do feel guilty when I stay in and don't enjoy the fresh air a bit.

  13. I actually live in Harrisburg, PA. I would rather be outside. But it's nice to have a TM that I can use when I need to. So I love mine.

  14. When my last treadmill broke, I literally was at a store that afternoon. I panic when I don't have a treadmill. Love having the option to do it when weather doesn't cooperate. Plus, love to watch TV & be distracted :) Plus, love being close to a toilet. My 40 yr old bladder is thankful for that one :)

  15. I would totally invest in a treadmill if we had the space for it (tiny NYC apt living doesn't really work for treadmills!). I'm not the biggest fan, but I agree with you that I'd rather use the treadmill than have to skip a run altogether!

    1. I hear you. I have been living in apartments and condos for awhile now. And the treadmill was one of the first thing that was on my list to get when I moved into a house. It is being well used.

  17. Love the medals next to the TM. I'm actually a TM fan so I don't mind running on them. It's always been helpful for me to be able to run safely after dark or in inclement weather. -C

  18. Welcome to the Philadelphia area! That's a great space to place your treadmill! Mine is in the middle of the living room. I use my treadmill quite frequently since I work 12+ hour shifts, although I prefer running outdoors.

  19. What a gorgeous work out space!!! I don't like the treadmill but I wouldn't mind having one for winter months!!!
I have been reading your blog for some time now and I don't know if I missed it or what, but I am confused to 1. who writes each post 2. where you two live/what you do for a living. I have picked up on bits and pieces but I think it would be fun if you did another blog post about yourselves. I was thinking of doing one too and having bloggers join in so we can learn about each other (all over) or for newer readers! :)

  21. I really enjoy treadmills for speedwork and tempo runs. Helps me keep track of my pace easier than running outdoors.

Love the new workout room and the treadmill looks really nice!

  22. Congrats on your move! Philly is such a fun city!! I wish I had my own treadmills, I really like them to do speedwork and tempo runs to help control my pace!

  23. Congrats on your new place!! Love all your medals! I'm about 45-60 min away from Philly depending on traffic, as I'm in Central Jersey. I'll be doing the 1/2 in Philly in November. :)

  24. Love your "new place"! Home gyms are great, I have one but it is small. Of course mine only consists of a treadmill and stair climber, and a few light weights:) Oh wait, I have one of those old cheesy Ab Rollers, LOL I still think that thing kicks my butt:)

  25. Our treadmill broke, which makes running on stormy days quite difficult. I agree with your philosophy – it's much better to run on a treadmill than nothing at all! Plus, sometimes it's nice to be able to watch some tv that keeps you entertained :)
