For years, I have claimed this place the best breakfast on Disney property, and still today I will stand by this claim.
Disney's Polynesian Village is one of our favorite resorts and even when we are not staying there, we think it's worth a visit to go there to eat at one of their fantastic restaurants. We've had amazing dinners at Ohana, lunches at Captain Cook's, and even some great snacks at Kona Island. But the place we probably visit the most, is our favorite breakfast spot, Kona Cafe!
Kona Cafe is located on the second floor of the Great ceremonial House ( the main check in center), and is right around the corner from Ohana.
Kona Cafe recently got a make over. Here are some pictures of what it use to look like.
The entrance.
The layout has stayed the same, but the color scheme has changed. I think it now gives a "Moana" vibe.
This is the new entrance.
We have new art on the wall.
And there is new furniture, flooring and light fixtures.
But enough about the decor, let's talk about why we really come here, the food! Kona Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but we think the breakfast is the best.
Here is the description from the Disney website.
Savor American favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner—prepared with hints of the South Seas.
Open to the tropical ambiance of the Great Ceremonial House, this casual café serves such breakfast delights as cinnamon and banana-stuffed Tonga Toast, a variety of savory egg dishes and macadamia-pineapple pancakes.
Satisfy big lunchtime appetites with a delish dashi noodle bowl or the Big Kahuna Burger.
For dinner, feast on a divine selection of delicacies that includes sushi rolls, poke bowls and chef-recommended dishes like the Kona-braised short rib—all served amid the relaxed atmosphere of this Polynesian restaurant.
Guests 21 years of age and up can enjoy fruity island cocktails, in addition to beer and wine.
The meal that made us fall in love with Kona Cafe was called "The Big Kahuna"
This platter was enough to share, but we usually each bought our own.
The meal consisted of the following:
- two eggs ( any style)
- toast
- breakfast potatoes
- ham
- sausage
- bacon
- two full size pancakes with macadamia nut butter and pineapple compote
This breakfast was delicious! Unfortunately, it is not on the menu anymore. However, the last time we visited here my sister was able to ask for it by name "The Big Kahuna" and they were still able to make it for her. At the time, it was a good price at under $20. I'm not sure how much they would charge for it now because I feel like they would charge you a la carte prices for each item added to the platter, but that's just a guess.
The meal on the current menu that comes closest to "The Big Kahuna" would be the Polynesian egg platter.
This Polynesian egg platter consist of the following:
- Two eggs ( any style)
- breakfast potatoes
- two mini pancakes with macadamia nut butter and pineapple compote
- your choice of ham or bacon or sausage
This platter is not as much food as "the Big Kahuna" and it is already priced at $22 ( which actually is a fair price by Disney food standards).
I feel that the breakfast menu at the Kona Cafe changes frequently. On my most recent visit, I had this meal ( I don't remember what it was called), but I do not see anything like it on the menu.
This meal consisted of two eggs, ham, breakfast potatoes, macadamia nut muffin and a side of fresh fruit. The fruit was not extra, it came with the meal.

Again, it was still pretty much food at a fair price. As far as table service breakfasts go, we think Kona Cafe is one of the best for the amount of food you get for your money, and the quality of food.
However, there is one thing I would be cautious about. I have always been curious about the Tonga Toast, which is banana stuffed sourdough French toast rolled in cinnamon and sugar and then deep fried. They sell this at Kona Cafe with an additional side item for $17.50. I sort of want to try this but my sister always reminds me that I don't like deep fried dough items like churros, donuts, elephant ears, etc. and that I probably won't enjoy this meal. We have noticed that they also sell the Tonga toast with a side of bacon or sausage at Captain Cooks, the quick service location, for only $10.99. It may be smart for me to order this from Captain Cooks to see if I even like it.
The menu at Kona Cafe for lunch and dinner looks intriguing as well. These menu items definitely have more of a South Pacific flare to them. Items include things like sushi, pot stickers, and poke bowls. There are a few burgers on the menu as well. You can see the complete menu
HERE.
It is highly recommended to make reservations here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but when it is just the two of us, we have been able to get in for breakfast with no reservation.
Where is your favorite place to have breakfast on Disney property?
Till next time ~ M and L
