Cadence, Pureflow, Ghosts, and Lunarfly's, O my!

So I was due for a new pair of sneakers.  Someone once told me don't fix something that's not broken.  I am a firm believer in that. However,  after 5 marathons and 3 halves this year,  I went through many sneakers.
                                                      Nike Lunarflys

I was and still am a huge fan of the Lunarfly Nike's. They seemed to come out with a new model everytime I went to the store to purchase a pair, lunarfly, lunarfly 2, lunarfly 3, and now they are even up to lunarfly 4. But after running as much as I did this year and kept replacing them, there hasn't been any new ones lately, so my size has not been in stock. In addition, I have been kind of sick of getting the same 2 colors they offer in the style anyways. So I thought it was time to venture out and try a new pair.

Now I know I probably should have went to a runner's speciality store to get my feet analyzed and see how I run, however I didn't want to get talked into something I didn't like. And plus those stores seems to be a bit pricier than the shoe stores at the mall. And besides, there was nothing wrong with my feet, I have a neautral arch, and I never had problems in the past buying running shoes anywhere else.

I thought I would try Brooks. I've heard many good things about this brand and a lot of my runner friends love them. I know some run in the ghost, but  I knew I wanted a more minimal feel and more light weight. I didn't need support from a heavier shoe. So the associate showed me Brooks Cadence.

At first when I put them on they felt a bit weird. But I think any new shoe you put on will feel different than then one your use to. The pure flow, another minimal shoe that I wanted to try was not in my size. Now I can never make a decision to save my life. I can't even pick what cheese to get from the supermarket let alone a big purchase like a pair of running shoes.

Luckily another lady was looking at the Brooks shoes at that same time and I asked her if she knew anything about the ones I tried one. She told me that her daughter just bought those and she came back after a 12 mile run and had her foot on ice ever since. She said she didn't want to discourage me from buying them, but wanted to tell me because she thought it was a coincidence that I asked her about those specific shoes when that incident just happened the other day. After her telling me this, I was still undecided,  so I thought the best person to ask about these shoes would be my friend that use to work for the Rock and Roll Series where Brooks is their sponsor.

I told him my dilemma and what shoe I was trying out. He told me that the Brooks Cadence is meant for motion control and because I don't have that problem I do not need them. (Something I'm sure the person at the runner's store would have told me right aways). He told me that the minimal shoe I would want to get would be the Pureflow. I immediately put those shoes back. The next store I went to wouldn't you know it, had the Pureflow and in my size and they were on sale...even better!

After purchasing the shoes, I've gone on several runs and they have been treating me well so far.

Do you ever make an impulse buy with shoes because of the price or style you like? What kind of shoes do you run in and why?

  1. Buying new shoes always makes me nervous! After purchasing a pair of Saucony's one time by finding a shoe on my own instead of going to the specialty running stores, my outer leg had a lot of pain from running in them. I always go see an expert now lol Luckily I have found a great Asics shoe that works for me! Though I am deterred from trying new shoes, which sometimes can actually be a good thing!

  2. I buy the same ones time after time and buy in bulk! I have 3 new pair of the Brooks Ravenna 4's at the moment and keep track of the mileage. For some reason, despite being a tiny person, my shoes really only work for me for about 250 miles. Not alot when I lot that in just 3-4 months.

  3. I wear Brooks Ghost after being an ASICS girl for years. Too many changes have driven my from ASICS, and the Brooks are doing pretty well for me so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed they don't change like ASICS did.

    1. Don't you just hate that when you find a good shoe and then they go and change it? So frustrating!

    2. I swear by the Ghosts too. I have a new pair of Ghost GTX's coming in tomorrow and I am planning on buying a pair of Ghost 6's at a good price on Friday. A friend of mine has the PureFlows and fortunately we have the same size shoe so she let me try 'em. Really nice! I used to be a Mizuno gal, until they started messing the Wave Rider's design. Hope you like the Flows!

  5. I also buy the Brooks Ravenna in bulk and rotate them by mileage. I am afraid to try another brand, because these have been my first real serious running shoes.

  6. I loved my PureFlows for my first training season. Now my feet won't have them, but I have a couple of brand new pairs, just in case they change their mind!
