The transformation behind EPCOT's Gran Fiesta Tour

As I was going through my Disney photos, I noticed that the attraction I have the most photos and videos of is the Gran Fiesta Tour in Epcot's Mexico pavilion.

I don't know how that happened, but I guess there must be something about this ride that just draws me in every time.  For this reason, I thought I would do a little research about the ride.

The Gran Fiesta Tour almost never has a long wait, it has animatronics, catchy music, air conditioning, and one of the best atmospheres in Disney.

I remembered that it wasn't always called Gran Fiesta Tour. When it originally opened in 1982 ( my first ride on it wasn't till many years later), it was called El Rio del Tiempo, which means The River of  Time.

The current Gran Fiesta Tour is very different in tone from the original version of the ride, which is why longtime Disney fans get nostalgic talking about it.

The River of Time operated from 1982–2007. This boat ride focused much more on Mexican history, folk art, landscapes, traditions, music, and culture.

It had a slower, atmospheric tone, almost like a peaceful travel documentary mixed with Disney storytelling.

Guests floated past ancient ruins, volcanoes village scenes, traditional dancers, marketplaces, and coastal areas

There were also animatronic scenes celebrating everyday life in Mexico rather than Disney characters.

The Current Ride: Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros started In 2007. Disney re-themed it around Donald Duck, José Carioca, and Panchito Pistoles (the Three Caballeros from the classic Disney film)

Now the story line is that Donald  has gone missing before a big performance in Mexico, and José and Panchito search for him throughout the country.

So instead of mainly showcasing Mexican culture directly, the ride now focuses more on humor, Disney characters, musical performances, and cartoon-style scenes.

You still see Mexico-inspired scenery and landmarks, but they’re more of a backdrop to Donald’s adventure.

Regardless of the storyline, we love this boat ride and the feeling of being transported to another country!

If you are still intrigued with the Mexico pavilion, be sure to check out our post on the unique restaurant inside the pyramid. You can read about that HERE.

Till next time ~ M & L
