4th of July 5K race

It's about time we put some Fitness back into this Fairytale Blog!

Falcon Racing

Since 2020, our racing has been rather slim and so have our race recaps. This past week I ran my first race of the year, can you believe it?

Falcon Racing

On the 4th of July I ran a local 5K race. I have not run this race since prior to Covid. In years past I remember it being so darn hot since it started at 9: am.  This year it was perfect weather and it started at 8:00 am!  These are the makings of a great race day!  Parking is never a big issue at local races which is a plus.  Also, a plus, there is no wait for a "real" restroom rather than a porta potty. It is a fairly small race with about 200 participants. Soon  we were all lined up and ready to run.

Everyone always starts out so fast, myself included.  My first mile clocked in at 6:56. I didn't feel like I was going that fast but knew I needed to slow down so I didn't tire out.  The course is country roads, so there is no entertainment along the way.   As we were running, this one lady and I were pretty much neck and neck the entire time.  She would pull ahead, then I would.  There was a pretty steep hill about a mile and a half into it.  This hill slowed a lot of people down.  I continued to power up it and I past a few runners that were now walkers.

Once we got to the top of the hill we took a left ( something we had not done in previous years), and I saw a few more steep rolling hills.  I was hoping we weren't going to be doing a turn around and have to come back up this way.  I didn't see any cones in the middle of the road nor did I see runners on the other side, so that was a good sign.  After those few hills there was a downhill stretch then a flat road to the finish.

The lady that I would pass and then get passed by was ahead of me by this time.  I was feeling good though and knew I wanted to pull ahead of her closer to the finish.  I wasn't sure if she was in my age group or not so I wanted to make sure I passed her, so I did!

I finished at 22.44 and got first in my age group.  I found out the lady that I passed was not in my age group anyways.  After the 5k race, there were some kids races, and then the awards ceremony.  A few years back when I ran this race, I received a nice seat cover for my car that I still use to this day.  It is perfect for summer to cover my hot leather seats. I was excited to see what the prizes would be for this year.

Falcon racing prizes

Well this year, the prizes were socks! Everyone received the same pair of basic crew cut white socks.  They did have the race name and logo on them though.  I guess it is another practical gift, just odd to get as a prize gift.   What is the strangest prize you ever received for running a race? -L

We will be linking up with Running on the fly and Confessions of a Mother runner for their weekly run down.

  1. Congrats on a great race! Unexpected hills are always a challenge. I wouldn’t mind getting socks if they were good ones. I thought the knit winter hat I got at a December race was fun.

  2. Congrats on the AG win! I think the weirdest (and best) prize I've gotten is cold, hard cash! Haha!

  3. Congrats! My weirdest prize was from a 10K that was run on an airport strip. I brought home a while scarf (with the event logo)...much like you'd see a pilot wearing in a vintage airplane, LOL. It's hanging on my medal rack, and looks really odd!

  6. Nice job recovering from that really fast first mile! While I love the idea of socks as a prize, I really don't like white socks.

  7. Congrats! So nice to see your blog post show up in my feed! Socks are definitely a unique race item. I've never received a pair of socks as a prize but I guess it better than the standard t-shirt since as runners, we have 100 of those already, lol.

  8. Congratulations! That is a fast time! One of my policies during a race is, whenever there's someone ahead of me I assume they're in my AG and pass them if I can. The strangest prize I've gotten from a race is probably a recent one- it was a pair of odor-reducing sachets for running shoes, with a little note that said "You definitely don't stink at running!" Er... thanks!

  9. Wow, Lacey, congrats on the AG win! Looks like time away from the race didn't slow you down. I don't think I've ever received anything weird for an AG award but I did come in 2d in my AG in a half marathon that only awarded prizes to the first place AG finishers! It was a little odd.

  10. Very speedy race. Congrats on the age group win and for passing that girl at the end. It always feels good to catch a target. I've gotten socks at a race before as well and it did seem odd.

  11. What a stellar performance and a well-desered AG award at the end! I think my strangest gift was a plant! And sadly it was a race in South Africa so I wasn't allowed to carry it across the border to Botswana!
