Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney's Animal Kingdom

Pulled pork and mac and cheese at Disney World

I am not lying when I say that Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney's Animal Kingdom may just be my favorite restaurant.  Which may sound odd because out of all the restaurants at Disney, most people would not choose a counter service restaurant as their favorite.

I had never even heard of Flame Tree Barbecue until 2021, but to be fair Animal Kingdom has never been our "go to" for good restaurants. Besides Rain Forest Cafe, I don't even think we've ever eaten at a restaurant in Animal Kingdom prior to 2021.

But somehow , I saw a mention of Flame Tree Barbecue ( must have been on social media or Youtube), and I wanted to check it out.

Let me state that I am not a big "meat" eater, nor do I care for "Barbecue", but I DO love mac and cheeses and I heard they had a mac and cheese bowl.

Check out their menu:

I was sold when I saw the baked macaroni and cheese with pulled pork. It was topped with coleslaw and onion rings shaped as a Mickey head. Let's face it, if your food is shaped like Mickey, it automatically tastes better, right?

Pulled pork and mac and cheese bowl

I will admit that that I have got this dish several times but my onion rings were not always shaped like a Mickey head. I guess it depends on the cast member that put it together.  I actually heard that this dish now comes with onion "straws".

Regardless of whether or not there is a Mickey on top of this dish makes no difference to how delicious it is! The mac and cheese is creamy, not dry. The pulled pork is not overly smoky. It is a bit tangy but not too sweet. It is not drenched in Barbecue sauce either, which I appreciated.  The coleslaw is not overly sloppy with mayo. The onion rings were perfectly crispy!  This was the best mid day meal during a day at Animal Kingdom and it was a good value for what you got.

There is no indoor seating at Flame Tree Barbecue. You will order your food at the kiosk and then go to the outdoor seating area. They have two covered sections here and the times I've been here it fills up quickly.  Behind the covered seating areas there are some stand alone tables ( not covered) that over look the water.  These are sort of hidden, away from the crowd.

This is not only my favorite restaurant in Animal Kingdom, but my favorite quick service in all of Disney World.  I do wish the seating situation here was a little better. It would be nice if it was inside in air conditioning, but at least the coverings have ceiling fans.
