Rock n Roll Las Vegas Race Recap

Sunday was race day! After brunching and resting earlier, we were ready for 13.1 miles down the Las Vegas Strip!

We were staying in Old Vegas off Freemont street so we had to Uber to where the start was but of course all the roads were blocked off so we got dropped off as close as he could go.  We still had to walk close to a mile to the start.

I had run this race a few years ago in the full distance(which I did not care for) so I was excited to do the half this year since it's up and back down the strip.

Getting to our corrals was ridiculous! Usually at races each corral is gated off and you show someone your bib to verify your corral and then enter. Well not this one.

Everyone had to enter from the last corral and maneuver their way up to their corral. When you have over 20,000 people between the half and the full this is not an easy task. I believe there were 16 corrals and I was in corral 4! I eventually made my way up to my corral before the race started.

There was a 4:30 PM start for my corral.  It quickly became dark around this time.

Other than the lights from the streets and buildings there was barely any additional lighting. Not only was it hard to see but more of a safety issue. The streets were not paved the best and you always had to watch your footing because there were a bunch of reflectors in the road. I guess that's what they were, however they weren't giving off any light.

So as I was running I kept thinking boy this strip is longer than I thought. Shouldn't we be turning around soon? I looked on the other side of the road and saw people walking. I thought if I was in corral 4 how did all these people get in front of me and are walking now?

Well little did I forget that there was also a 10k race going on as well, but they started at a different location but ended at the same one. Now it makes sense!

                                                     Crossing the finish line.

Overall it was a good race. Especially since it was over my birthday weekend! It was much better than the full I ran a few years ago.

I think it is a race you could definitely put on your bucket list, especially with all the distance options.

In addition to the 5k the night before, there is the 10k, half, and full. However there are so many other great races out there I have yet to run so for me I won't be repeating this race any time soon.  -L

We will be linking up with  the gals from TOTR.

  1. That's a sweet medal!

Yes,those are reflectors on the road & yes, you have to watch out for them!

Vegas was my first half. I don't really remember having trouble seeing, though. Strange. I've heard that the full is rather boring. I know I wouldn't pick it if I were ever to do a full, despite loving Vegas!

Sounds like you has a great birthday weekend in Vegas.

  2. Happy birthday! What a great place to celebrate - Las Vegas! Sounds like you had a good race. Running on the strip is pretty appealing. Maybe I will give the Vegas half a try.

  3. I was supposed to run this race last year but backed out after the shooting. I've heard a lot of things about the race and I just don't think I'll add it to my to run list. The corral issue happens in Chicago too. It's incredibly annoying. RnR needs to address this issue.

  4. I've run this race a couple of times and always feel bad when the full marathoners break off cuz it looks like they're heading into a black abyss and from what I hear they are! I never had an issue with it being too dark to see. Sounds like they changed the 10k too. Last year it started and ended at a different time and place.

    1. That is exactly how I felt when I saw that turn for the full marathon. Thinking to myself, I am glad that is not me!

  6. I really love the Rock n Roll medals - they are always so cool! I did this race in 2016 and it was a little strange for me running at night. My body was like what's going on here, lol. But it was fun to see everything on the strip.

    1. Yeah that is cool. I think that is why they do it at night! Wouldn't have the same effect if they did it during the day.

  7. How was it waiting until 4:30pm to run a race? The only evening race I have ever done was the mile, which is in the summer on Front Street in Harrisburg and my age group would always go anywhere between 6-7pm. It was torrrrrture waiting that long to race! All day long I had to be so careful of what I put into my body.

    1. I don't think it was bad. I liked sleeping in and I have a pretty iron stomach so the food I eat prior doesn't effect me.

  8. That corral situation does not sound good! It wasn't like that when I did it a couple years ago. I wonder why they would change to a system like that when it should have been clear it would be difficult :(

    1. Yea I don't know. I don't remember it being the case a few years ago when I ran it either. Maybe it was because of the shooting last year and for security purposes. Who know.

  9. I don't remember that corral issue last year, but what I do remember is they really weren't enforcing the corrals. I had a ton of fun doing the 10k last year.

    1. There was definitely no enforcing. Which probably should have happened.

  11. Your race pictures turned out so good! Glad you had fun in the end but yes, that corral system seems pretty chaotic. The medal is really cool, btw.
