A Peek in our Week

Welcome to another edition of a Peek in our Week.

I’ve cut down on my running until marathon weekend but this week I finally got to test out my new bike I got for Christmas. I got the Nordic Track with iFIT but I am convinced the best part about it is that it has a fan built in. Note: if you ever by an exercise bike, make sure it has a fan!  -M

I started my New Year (new year’s eve anyway) off with a cortisone shot. My regular doctor was off for the holiday so I had to see the P.A.  This was a little frustrating at first because she was convinced that a cortisone shot was not the answer.  (I know that it is not going to fix the problem but I needed it to get me through marathon weekend).  I asked her what my alternative to the cortisone would be and she said she didn’t know. I showed her where my pain was and asked her what it could be and she said she didn’t know.  I told her I’d been getting the cortisone shots in each hip. She wondered why I was getting the shots in my hips when my pain was behind and beside my knees. I had been wondering this same thing too.  She sat at her computer and read some things for a while (I think she was Web MD-ing me). I was starting to wonder if she was going to give me a Dr. Google diagnosis. In any case I wasn’t about to have her stick a needle in the side of my knee if she didn’t know what she was doing.  Alas she gave me only one shot and it was right below my waist line. I told her I had pain on both sides and that I usually get two shots but she convinced me that the cortisone would work throughout my entire body.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed.  She suggested that I start taking an oral steroid, which I haven’t yet because I want to research what the side effects would be.  She also told me I needed to go to Ortho and I told her that I already went there back in July and they gave me cortisone shots too.  She set me up with an MRI which I will go to on Tuesday.   In the mean time, I think I am going to go to the pharmacy and see if I can pick up a brace or one of those bands for the IT band. My PT told me to not bother with that because it would not help but I’m pretty desperate at this point and will try anything to help get me through marathon weekend! -M

On a better note, I got a much needed manicure and pedicure. My mom had some left over  gift certificates so she treated us to a spa day. -M

The highlight of my week was hosting a New year's Eve party.  We spent the evening with good friends, lots of food, and fun games!  -L

What was the highlight of your week?

  1. Meranda I certainly hope that shot helps and you can get through marathon weekend pain free. Is it possible you need to strengthen a certain part of your body and the pain would subside. Obviously there isn't time for strength training prior to your race weekend, but perhaps that would help you moving forward.

    1. That is what is so frustrating. I've been doing the strength training techniques i've learned at PT. I had a few good months and now the pain is back!

  9. I hope the cortisone helps and you can get through this coming weekend. After my shot didn't work, I haven't been back. No sense in getting more if the first one didn't help.
