What is a Murder Mystery Weekend?

This weekend my sister and I did our annual Murder Mystery trip to the Allenberry Resort.  The Murder Mystery weekend is a whole weekend that revolves around live theatre and food. Lots  and lots of food! Every year there is a theme. This year the theme was "Back in Time". It was set in the 1920's  ( hence why some of you may have seen us dressed up like that on Twitter and FB this weekend).
We wanted to give you a run down of the activities and the menu so you could see a little bit of what this weekend was all about.

Friday night's attire was 1920's Flapper wear ( and whatever it was that the men dressed in)

These are the outfits we chose!

Friday's reception buffet

Can you believe we had all that food at the reception and that was even BEFORE dinner! The actors are performing during the reception and during the dinner.
Lacey with one of the actresses
They ate with us and they stay in character the whole time. They actually stay in character the entire weekend.

After the reception we moved upstairs to the ballroom where we were served a plated meal.

If you've seen this photo posted on Twitter with the caption " a new found talent" you may have been wondering what it was referring to.

Well, let me tell you.  After I had gotten this dessert pictured above ( which actually had 2 cherries on it), my sister asked me if I've ever heard of anyone being able to tie the stem of a cherry in their mouth. I thought I had heard of this before but I never seen it done. Low and behold the actress that was beside us was able to do it. Then my sister tried and she did it too. I was trying and almost got it but I blame my failure on a having a crooked stem!

And then Saturday we were up bright and early for more food!

The characters performed during breakfast then it was time for a group activity of our choice. Each of the actors host an activity for the group. This year we chose the trivia. Last year we actually chose to play wiffle ball!  And then guess what? It was time to eat again! Lunch was another buffet. The characters performed again through lunch and then we had some free time until dinner.

                                                     Saturday night was Formal night.
Sorry for the poor picture quality.

Some of the guest chose to participate in the costume party on Saturday night. The theme was "Through the decades". Some of the costumes included Sonny and Cher, the cast of Grease, Some Greek Gods and Goddesses, Jane Eyre, some hippies, and the best costume was a couple who dressed as Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne. I wish we had a picture of them. They actually won the contest.

Saturday evening was again a buffet reception followed by a plated dinner and lots of dancing!

                                                   More actors from the weekend.

Sunday was more acting, brunch, a little more acting, followed by a meet and great with the actors as "real" people. I found out that the actor on the right is actually from our area and went to a neighboring High School!

We can't wait to do the murder mystery weekend again next year. Next year the theme is "A Diva to Die For". I have a feeling it is gonna make for a great "girls weekend" for a lot of people!

So, have you ever been to a murder mystery?  Can you tie a cherry stem with your tongue?

Since there was a lot of food mentioned in this post, I am still linking it up with the Tasty Tuesday Link up that we are co-hosting with Lean Lena.  Go ahead and link your food post up too!

  1. OMG that sounds so fun!! I want to go, especially to the Diva one next year! You ladies look gorgeous in your dresses! All that food looks delicious too - btw, how do they do the 'murder'? Is it during one of the meals and the actors are going around trying to find the culprit?

    1. Yes, that is exactly it. Usually the first person is found dead on friday evening at the reception and then another one winds up being "murdered" through out the weekend. They use a lot of special effects and fake guns ( but they are very loud).

  2. That sounds like fun. My parents and their friends hosted one of these parties for an evening, years and years ago. I was in elementary school and didn't understand it, but someone found a kit of how to put a party together and they all wore different costumes (I think the era was the '20s), from flappers to gansters to baseball players.

    1. Yes, it is exactly like a cruise! We've said that so often because every time we turn around it was time to eat!

  4. That sounds like fun! I'm not sure I'd have the attention span for a whole weekend, though. I think I'd be into it for the first night and then be done.

    1. Actually i'm just the opposite. It takes me a while to figure out what's going on and who is who. By the end of the weekend I finally feel like I know what's going on!

  5. Wow, that sounds like so much fun! I've never heard of an event like this before. I'll have to look and see if there's anything like that around here. And I actually have a food post in time to link up this week :)

  6. What a fun weekend. You both looked gorgeous in your flapper attire and on formal night. With all that food, did you have any free time for a run? I have seen someone tie a cherry stem into a knot, but I never could manage it. Next year should be really fun with the Diva theme!

    1. Thank you for the compliments. Dressing up for these things is always part of the fun. Next year's theme does sound fun and it's about 2 sisters who are twins. We've already started to think of our outfits! Sadly we did not run. We did do some walking before the rain came!

  8. That is awesome you got to do the whole weekend! Years ago, when my hubby and I were dating, we went to Allenberry for one night of the murder mystery. His dad was part of the band there, so we got free tickets. We had so much fun dressing fancy and the food was divine. Wowwww you just took me back. That was a great night with Paul. :)
