It has been decades since we last ate at the 50's Prime Time Cafe at Disney's Hollywood Studios, so we thought it was worth a visit. We had only made reservations that same day, and we were still able to get in for dinner at 6:00 pm.
As you enter the restaurant, the "Tune in Lounge", a retro themed bar area is to your left. ( There is a separate outdoor entrance to this lounge as well).
You can sit at the bar and grab a drink or just relax in the mid-century living room, complete with period authentic furniture, until your table is ready. I popped into the Tune in Lounge on a previous trip hoping to order the Peanut butter and Jelly milkshake I had heard so much about. It was then that I found out that you can no longer order that milkshake at the lounge. This treat is now reserved for those who are being seated in the dining room.
When our table was ready, the sweet hostess escorted us to the dinning room and to our table.
The interior of the place was exactly how I remembered it. Since this restaurant pays homage to the 1950's, I suppose there really is no need to update the place over the years ( besides routine maintenance).
If you've never been to 50's Prime Time Cafe before, let me give you a little heads up. This place is not just a restaurant, it's an interactive experience!
The entire staff plays the role of overbearing family members and their main job is to enforce proper table manners. You may get a playful scolding if your elbows are on the table, your cell phone is out, or you forget to take off your hat ( or Minnie ears) while seated. Our server was a fantastic older gentleman who played his 1950's role to perfection. He had that classic 'busy home cook' energy, bustling around as if he was in a rush to feed a packed house, but he kept things polite, personable, and attentive without leaning heavily into scolding antics, or maybe we just had wonderful table manners! It was the ideal balance for us, allowing us to just relax and enjoy our meal.
Another thing to know about 50's Prime Time Cafe, is that it is home cooking at its finest.
These are traditional American meals, and some might find them rather "heavy" for a park day. This is exactly why we've passed this restaurant by so often. Nobody wants to walk around a hot theme park being stuffed! We were nearing the end of our park night, so I thought it would be okay to eat a little "heavier".
When it came time to order, I was torn between the meatloaf and the pot roast. But then, I saw the perfect compromise on the menu. It was called A Sampling of Mom’s Favorite Recipes and my sister and I decided we would share this.
This meal gave us both the meatloaf and the pot roast, along with Aunt Liz’s Golden Fried Chicken. While I wasn't particularly eager to get the fried chicken, it turned out to be surprisingly delicious! The sampler also came with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans. We split this platter and it was enough for the both of us to have a little bit of everything. If you are coming in with a hearty appetite, you could certainly eat the entire plate yourself, as it is not an "oversized" portion by any means.
This was a very delicious meal.
My sister and I didn't leave a single crumb behind, which earned us an official membership into the Clean Plate Club, complete with stickers from our server to prove it!
We definitely earned ourselves dessert. ( Not sure our server would allow us to get dessert had we not finished our meal).
I knew right away that I was going to finally try the Peanut butter and Jelly milkshake. My sister couldn't decide if she wants anything, so we just split the milkshake. Our wonderful server knew we were going to share it, so he even brought it out in two different containers, which made it so much easier for us to drink it!
I'm glad I got the milkshake, but it wasn't as flavorful as I hoped. It did just taste more like a Peanut butter shake. The meatloaf and mashed potatoes were definitely the star of the show here tonight.
Overall, this was a good meal and a good time. I am glad that we gave 50's Prime Time Cafe another visit. I would suggest this restaurant for anyone craving classic comfort food and a uniquely nostalgic setting.
Note: The 50's Prime Time Cafe and Hollywood and Vine ( one of the other restaurants in Hollywood Studios),are a connected building and they share a restroom. When you go to the restroom, you can peek around the corner to catch a glimpse of the other restaurant!
Till next time~ M & L
