Coffee Talk and No More Goals

Hey All, it's Lacey! I've had some things on my mind lately so I thought I would link up with the ladies for "Coffee Talk" and chat about it there!

So if we were having coffee, I'd say let's talk about goals, but not in the way you would expect.

Recently I have been watching several vloggers and YouTubers continue to talk about what your goals or purpose is in life. They are always striving for the better version of themselves. If you are one of them, more power to you. However, why can't we be happy with ourselves at the moment?

Now don't get me wrong there were several goals that I wanted to achieve in life and I am happy to say that I have.

Bought a house check, have a career I love, check, ran the Boston Marathon (twice), check and check. Run 20 marathons by the end of 2020 check. I actually completed 22 by the end of 2019, which I was happy about since we all know how 2020 played out and unfortunately I didn't run any that year. After completing those certain goals in life, am I any less of a person by not having more goals to reach? Why continue to reach for more when you are happy for who you are in the moment.

Because I do not have an extraordinary goals I am reaching towards doesn't mean I am any less ambitious or selling myself short by any means. Some may have a different opinion and that is fine, but all I am saying is why can't we be happy for who we are and what we have now? Acquiring more stuff or reaching a certain status in life is not going to make us a better/happier person. Be grateful for what we have and who we are in the moment.
In the future there may be a goal I want to achieve that I will work towards, but for now I am content in who I am as a person and happy with my choices in life and don't feel the need to always reach for the next best thing.
What are your thoughts in always reaching towards a goal?
Is there a goal you are currently working towards?

Till next time....-L

  1. It's great that you are at a place in life where you are so content! I started to feel that way a few years ago--just that I didn't have any left to prove. But I still set goals, just smaller ones. It keeps me motivated.

    1. Smaller goals is always goals. I don't set too big of one's anymore. I don't want to feel disappointed in myself if I don't reach them.

  2. I do think that it's important to be happy right here & now, and that most people push WAY too much. In fact, I started a blog post a while ago entitled When is enough enough? I've actually been thinking about finishing that up recently!

OTOH, I do think that goals are important too. We are meant to grow and evolve -- all our lives -- and goals help with that. Trust me, I have seen way too many unhappy elderly people, and sometimes it's because they were content where they were (not always) and stopped growing.

So my short answer is I do very strongly feel you need to be content with what you have, but also continue to challenge yourself. And that challenge will always evolve too -- it's not necessarily about doing something big & scary or hard, but something that stretches you & helps you grow.

  3. I feel much the same way. I am one who enjoys the journey without focusing on the destination. I don’t need specific goals to be motivated, and I’ve always had a hard time setting goals, although that may stem from fear of failure.

    1. Agreed! That's why I don't set new year's resolutions goal, so I am not disappointed when I don't reach them.

  4. I think your goals served you well at the time, but it's nice to sit back and enjoy where you are sometimes. I get what you're saying- having big goals can imply that you're not satisfied with your life as it is. There has to be some kind of a balance, where you can have goals but also enjoy the process. Anyway, interesting post- food for thought here.

  6. I think it's great, and motivating, to have goals. But, it's also wise to sit back and appreciate where we are, how we got there, and just enjoy the moment ;-)

  7. YES! YES! YES! You and I are on the same wave length in our posts. First off, I am just floored and congratulate you on the amazing things you've done. In fact as I was reading I was already thinking, how come I haven't done this much but then you said, am I less of person without these goals? That was exactly the line I need to bring me back from comparing but rather celebrating you and thinking we all have unique paths in life and we also have to acknowledge our goals, ambitions and what truly gives us joy can and will change as we change. Loved everything about this post and love coffee talk. Missed reading your blog!

    1. Thank you! I think comparing yourself to others is a struggle that everyone may have at some point. But like you said everyone is on a different path and journey so we need to stop doing that to ourselves. It obly makes us feel worse.

  8. I agree with you completely. I am grateful and proud of the goals that I have accomplished but sometimes I feel like we get caught up in wanting and doing more instead of sitting back and enjoying what we have or have done.
    Great post!

  9. You bring up a good point. I am happy with what I have now and who I am now, but I like having additional goals to keep me motivated.

  10. I think so many of us are always looking for the new goals to meet that they don't take the time to reflect on what they have already accomplished in their life. So knowing that, is a great feeling!!!
