Sleigh Run

Last weekend, after the Running of the Elves 5K race, we participated in the Santa Sleigh Run.
This was the first year for the Santa Sleigh Run in our community. The objective was to get a team of 3 to 5 people, dress in costumes, and build a sleigh out of something (but it could not have a motor on it). The sleigh had to be able to hold one of the participants, who was dressed as Santa, or any other holiday character.

At first,
the participants were going to be just my sister and I and the two dogs (Belle and Eppie). I wasn’t sure if our team would qualify since we were only two humans, but you know I always count our dogs as “people” too so in my mind, we definitely had a team of 4! Besides, I figured, the more participants the merrier. Nobody would care that we included dogs.

I constructed our sleigh out of Baylee’s jogging stroller. It was originally yellow, so I covered it in a red plastic table cloth. I constructed some sleigh runners out of cardboard, glued some gold garland around it, and hung a wreath on the front! For what it was, I thought it looked pretty good.
For the costumes, Lacey and Eppie were going to be reindeer. Lacey dressed in all brown and got some antlers, and I had bought Eppie a reindeer costume from Amazon.  They would be the ones pulling the sleigh, while Belle, who was dressed as an elf, rode inside the sleigh as a passenger.

I dressed as an elf so I could help “guide” the sleigh if need be.  Earlier that day, one of our running buddies wanted to join us, so he got some antlers and participated as well. This was great, now we had a legitimate team of three!

Our original plan was to have Lacey and Eppie PULL the sleigh (AKA Jogging Stroller) but after seeing other sleighs that were made to be Pushed, we figured pushing it might be easier.  We still had Eppie hooked to the sleigh, and I just ran along side of her while the others pushed her.
The run was only a city block. I don’t remember what all the other sleighs were made out of but I know one other team also used a jogging stroller (with a human inside), and one team used one of those huge trash bins on wheels. (I don’t know if they are actual trash bins, but they are those large grey tubs that we use to put hangers in when I worked at a department store).

There were several categories our teams could win, not just who was the fastest.  Our team was not the fastest, but the judges did say that our sleigh was the only one that held up the entire race!   Our team ended up winning  Most creative costumes”.  We won some really nice prizes.  First, we each got a sleigh trophy ( that was made from the school on their 3-D printer which was pretty neat), and then we each got gift certificates and gift cards to some of the restaurants down town! I thought this was very generous!

So last Saturday ended up being a big day for our pups! They spectated ( and Eppie ran some of the race) at Running of the Elves 5K, and then they participated in the Sleigh Run ( where Eppie ran again), and then later that night they both dressed in their reindeer costumes and went to the community tree lighting event.  This holiday keeps getting better and better!

Any holiday themed runs for you this month? What kind of holiday events does your community hold?

  7. So this is the most adorable thing ever! What a cute race and what a precious elf! I would totally dress up the pugs and race them down the street in a stroller.

No holiday races for me this year because of my broken leg, but we have so many options for them. It's one of my favorite times of year to run.
