After doing all the official Run Disney races, my sister and I have made a point to start running the Disney Resort races. These Resort Fun Runs are fairly new and started just at the right time ( a time when we were over getting up at 3 am for a race).
The Resort Races are definitely not
a big event like the Run Disney races are, but it is a fun way to get in a run while on vacation and earn some cool Disney swag.
Last year was our first Resort Fun Run. We did the Beignet Dash at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside resort. You can read about that race HERE.
This year we did the Southern Most Point run at Disney's Old Key West Resort.
The Southern Most Point 3k is held Wednesday mornings at 7:30 am. Registration is $15 and you can register the day before or the day of. We registered the day of, between 7:00 and 7:15 am. We were not staying at Old Key West so we had to call for an Uber because Disney transportation would not have got us there in time.
After registering in Community Hall, we were taken to a platform behind the tennis court and that is where the race started. I don't think there were as many runners at this race as there was for the Beignet Dash at Port Orleans last year but it was a good mix of children, adults, and older adults, runners, joggers, and walkers.
The course was on the sidewalks and roads throughout the resort and honestly even though Old Key West is a beautiful resort ('we've stayed there in the past) I did not think it was very scenic course. For a scenic route, the Beignet Dash at Port Orleans was much more enjoyable. That course ran along the water and in front of the plantation mansions.
I should have worn sunglasses but it was so humid that they would fog up when I put them on. |
There were no balloons indicating the finish line or any cool props to pose with afterwards (like at Port Orleans). However, we did receive a fun little medal and a nice size water bottle that will definitely be put to use.
After the race we did not get a ticket for a free snack (like we did at Port Orleans), but we were offered water and a variety of granola bars which was nice.
As you can probably tell, out of the two resort runs we have done so far, I preferred the Beignet Dash at Port Orleans. However, The Southern Most Point race was NOT a bad one. The recreation director running it was great and I did appreciate the medal and the water bottle. Not ALL Disney resort runs offer the fun little medals. Some give pins and other types of swag, so if you are looking to collect the Disney resort medals, you'll want to put this run on your list. -M
Sounds like fun and a little less hectic as the big Disney Races!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I can't see my link! I tried twice to post it but it doesn't show up.
Definitely less hectic than the big Disney races.
DeleteYes, your link is posted.
A 3K? That seems kind of short (and sweet), so a great distance to get a lot of tourists involved ;-)
ReplyDeleteYes it was. Just enough in the florida heat and humidity.
DeleteA fun way to experience a Disney run and still have energy for Disney fun!
ReplyDeleteYes it was. We hope to do some more in the future.
DeleteThese do sound like a lot of fun! And that's great that the price is pretty reasonable and you can register the same morning.
ReplyDeleteYes they are, which is suprising for a Disney Race.
DeleteI think for $15 that's a great value and a great way to get some movement into your vacation (although now i want to go to the real Key West!).
ReplyDeleteWe were there once while on a cruise but only spent an afternoon there. It'd be fun to visit again.
DeleteThat seems like a great option on vacation for an affordable, low key run that everyone can participate in! It's cool that it's day of reg, too, in case anything goes wrong/weather is bad, etc.
ReplyDeleteExactly. And you get pretty nice swag for the price.
DeleteI have never run a 3K before, but it sounds like a fun distance to try. Way better than getting up at 3 a.m. for a big Disney race!
ReplyDeleteThe time was perfect at 7:30am. It was already hot, but for a short race it was fine.
DeleteThis is a sweet distance! I would totally do it!
ReplyDeletePerfect short race to keep you moving while on vacay!
ReplyDeleteI would do a race like that - wish Universal Studios would have one. Your medal and water bottle are nice souvenirs...what a fun thing to do and like you said not having to wake up at 3:00 am is so much better.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I wonder if Universal does have any runs like this?
DeleteSounds like a really fun little race to add to your list while visiting Disney!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, it was. I am glad we were able to make this one work during our visit.
DeleteHow have I not heard of this!?? We live in central FL and my husband has done several Run Disney races. I am shocked he hasn't told me about resort races. I'm looking at his medals now and I see 4 Disney ones. LOL I don't run but I enjoy the atmosphere! I LOVE working the tables during a race.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recap! It's always nice to get a heads up of what to expect from races even if I don't run them.
We've done all the Run Disney races so now we are being more relaxed about it and trying to participated in the Resort races when we visit. There are several resorts on Disney property that offer the races but not all of them give medals.
