4th of July 5k

Yesterday I ran a 4th of July 5k race. The only thing patriotic about it was that it was on the 4th and the Star Spangled Banner was sung.

When I arrived at the race
it was already hot and humid and I felt like it should have started at 7am rather than 8 am.

I ran into an old friend and we chatted a bit until it was time to line up.

Once we lined up I saw my Uncle running it as well. As soon as the song was over the horn blew and we were off. No countdown or anything. That threw me off a bit because I didn't have my watch nor my ipod ready to go.

The first mile I was moving and clocked in at 6:50. I was feeling good but knew a huge hill was soon coming up so I needed to save some energy. When I got to the hill it felt like I was never going to get to the top of it. Once I did, it was a pretty steep incline down and I almost felt like I was going to wipe out so I was a bit more cautious down it. Then it was a flat fast road to the finish line. I saw a few ladies up ahead that I was trying to pass but just didn't have it in the tank today but it turns out neither one was in my age group anyways.

After crossing the finish line I went to the results board to see if I placed and I did. I placed second in my age group. We waited for the awards ceremony and I received a towel car seat cover. Which is more useful than another medal.

What useful race swag have you received other than a medal? -L

  1. Congrats Lacey! You are having a great year of running. I think the tree that I received at my last race was probably the most unusual race swag I've ever gotten!

  2. Great job on your race! I"ve had some unique swag, but the oddest award I received was from a race on an airport strip...I was the 1st place Master (I think?), and I was rewarded an aviator scarf. Very symbolic, but I have never worn it LOL

  3. I have gotten a few glasses and mugs. Love useful swag.

    Congrats on a great race.

I skipped our race. Too hot. Went boating instead.

    1. Boating sounds very relaxing and much cooler than running a race.

  4. Congratulations! It looks like your outfit was patriotic too! I once won "party lights" at a July 4th race - like Christmas lights but red, white, and blue. We use them to decorate our mantel.

  5. Great job, Lacey! That is useful. I love getting mugs or pint glasses for awards. They're super useful! I skipped my race b/c it was 4 miles and 30 miles away. I went out with a big group for a birthday celebration run instead and I was glad I did! It was hot and humid here and that's my kryptonite. How was your weather?

    1. it was super hot here as well, and that big hill on the course didn't help.

  6. Oh, very nice swag! Congrats! Yes, we wish our 9 am race started earlier, too. It's a relatively large race (over 2000 runners) & it is patriotic with a huge flag & there's always a guy in a neighborhood playing Coming to America. I wonder if he just plays it on a loop because I hear it every year!

Also, I definitely wish there had been a flat finish, the last hill just killed me.

    1. I wish ours had more of a patriotic theme. We had a big hill a mile and half down the course and it was brutal.

  7. Awesome job and I love that they gave you a towel seat cover instead of a medal. I totally need to get one of these for my car. Right now I use a regular towel but it never stays in place, lol.

  13. Congrats Lacey on placing in your age group! I love the idea of a car seat cover for after sweaty runs - that's a really practical prize. I've won a couple of pint glasses which are handy, but my favorite age group placement prices are gift certificates to our local running store. Those rock!

  15. Congrats Lacey! Your award sounds like the perfect thing for a sweaty runner! The AG award that stands out for me is cold, hard cash! Does that make me a pro?? :P
