Tales from the Trails

Since the weather has been nice, and I've found a way to get out and run with Baylee, I've been hitting the trails more often! For that reason, I think it may be time to start sharing some of my crazy stories from my runs. Should I call them "Tales from the Trails"?

Here is an interesting story from my run this week
. I took Baylee in her cart and we ran around the trail at one of my favorite parks. I had forgot my Garmin so I sort of made up my own rules for this run. I wanted to see if I could run around the park a full loop pushing the jogging stroller before I stopped to walk.

So I started the run and by the time I went passed one of he parking lots I was a hot mess. I was huffing and puffing and hoping there wasn't anyone sitting in that one car watching me. I didn't think there was. But low and behold when it was time for me to loop around and come back through, I did see a guy slouching low in the drivers seat with his phone up. I just prayed he wasn't sitting there taking pictures (or video) of this crazy lady running with her dog.

I successfully finished the first loop running and pushing the stroller the entire way. Yay!  And just to be clear, running and pushing a stroller with a full grown Labrador in it is NOT easy!

Anyway, here is where the story gets interesting. On my second loop,  as I passed the creeper guy in the car again, I noticed something on the ground. I bent down to look and it was a check. It was a check from someone's check book that they had written out to someone.  For a split second I was torn on whether or not I should pick it up or leave it there. Was this a trick? Was it a trap?  Did the guy in the car know anything about it?  For a minute I thought about asking the guy in the car if he knew anything about it but it didn't.

I picked it up and I first noticed that it was from the same bank that I belong to. My first instinct was to just take it to the bank and tell them I found it and have them give it back to the rightful owner.  I didn't really want to get involved but I wanted to do the right thing. But then my curiosity got the better of me and I did notice a name and phone number on the check.  At this point I forget what the lady's name was but I'll call her Nancy.

I call the number. "Is this Nancy?" I say. She says Yes.  I tell her who I am and that I had found a check of hers at this particular park.  I can tell by her voice she is a bit older and she really sounds dumbfounded. She asks me to repeat what I just said. I do.  She tells me that she hasn't been to this town where the park is in over 20 years. ( I knew from her address on her check that she was from out of town).  I give her the check number and the amount and I try to make out who it was made out to. Looks like Marlesa Whales or Marlesa Wheels. I can't quite make out the hand writing.  Nancy looks up the check number and she says "Meals on Wheel". Yes, that is it, I say.

I ask her if she knew how the check got to the park and she had no idea.  She did tell me that she DID give this check to someone.  "Apparently that someone is irresponsible", I say.   "YES SHE IS," said Nancy, "and I will be speaking to her supervisor."  She said.

And to think a little old lady made a check out to Meals on Wheel ( and this was dated back to earlier this month), and someone had lost her check.  I agreed to send her the check back in the meal.  I hope if those meals on wheels were for her, she got her meals for the month of April.

I seem to always have a story about my run and I just started for the season! I can't wait to see what other things I "run" into this year!  -M

  1. Running would be boring without the entertainment along the way! I usually forget the stuff that happens unless it's really interesting. Good for you, calling that woman. Most people would have just thrown it out. I mailed someone's driver's license back after I found it. But I never heard from her.

  2. I can't even imagine pushing kids in a stroller -- much less a lab! You are definitely strong, Meranda.

I dunno, I rarely have tales from my trails, LOL! Maybe that's a good thing. :)

    1. I do hope it makes me stronger, thanks Judy! Maybe I am that bored on a run that I seek these things out...haha

  3. Wow, never a dull moment in your life! I used to volunteer delivering meals for Meals on Wheels. I always assumed the meals were "free" to the recipients, but the program was funded by donations. None the less, it's great that you acted on your find and righted the situation ;-) Thanks for joining the link-up!!

    1. That is so cool that you volunteered for meals on wheels. I too thought it was a free program to those who qualified. Perhaps the check I found was for a donation. Although it was for a pretty odd amount ;)

  4. I am always amazed when I see runners out there pushing strollers, double strollers with big kids in them. I am sure pushing Bailey around is no easy task but probably a great workout! Thanks for linking up

  6. Wow! Nancy is lucky YOU found the check and not someone less honest and responsible. I deliver for Meals on Wheels and I know that sometimes the people who receive meals are a little bit confused. You were so nice to take the time to pick up the check and call the lady, especially since you thought it may have been a trap set by the creeper!

  7. Aww, what a sweet story, but that poor lady. I'm glad you followed up and were able to help her.

And I LOVE that you bring your dog in the stroller! I'm sure I will do the same some day when Tilda isn't able to run with me anymore.

  9. You're going to have some great upper body strength after running while pushing Baylee!

So great that you were able to call that women about the check and get things sorted out!

  10. I bet pushing Baylee is tough! You'll be so much faster when you run alone. That was nice of you to pick up and track down what was going on with that check. I'm glad it was just a lost check and not a stolen checkbook.

  11. wow! How irresponsible for the people at meals on wheels to lose a check! Thank heavens it was found by an honest person and not someone that took her checking account numbers down for nefarious purposes!

  12. What in the world???? That's a litttle upsetting to know a charity that relies on funds from others cant even keep up with it. Good for you for calling the lady.
& even more GOOD FOR YOU - pushing that stroller running. I cant even imagine the added intensity that chalks on to you. Strength train WHILE cardio training :)

  13. I can totally imagine how hard it would be pushing a grown labrador in a stroller whilst running!! better you than me! did you find a video of you later on youtube? :)

very odd story about the check! i can't say I see a lot of weird things or happenings while I'm running but occasionally I wonder what the heck people are doing if I'm in a fairly industrial area or say near the harbour. I imagine very dodgy things going on.

  14. Oh no, that is sad that the organization lost her check. Glad you found it. But as I was reading your story, I was thinking that there was a cameraman hiding and would jump out when you picked up the check. Haha, yes I watch too much TV. :-)

  15. It definitely sounds tough running while pushing Baylee in the stroller! Way to go. And that's great that you were able to figure out the situation with the check but how awful that they organization lost it :(

  16. I think pushing an empty stroller would be a challenge for me, so kudos to you! That does make me wonder how the check would end up out there. Glad you helped the situation!

  17. Hmm I wonder how it got there! Good thing you spotted it!

  18. Nice that you called about the mysterious check! One unusual thing I saw on a Texas run after a big storm, an alligator in our neighborhood ditch - they usually stayed in the lake behind our houses. Looks like a fun way to keep running with Baylee!
