Space Invaders at the Park

I have a quick little something to discuss for this week's 5 Minute Friday.

One day last week I was running at my favorite park. It was a good day for running outside! There were a few other people walking, and a few people walking with their dogs.  As soon as I began my run, I heard this buzzing noise overhead. As soon as I looked up, I knew what it was.

It was one of those remote control drones. I had seen this once or twice before when I was down at this park running. The guy that operates it sits at a picnic table at the far end of the park.  The last time I saw the drone at the park it didn't seem to bother me. I think maybe its because he was just finishing up flying it as I started to run, but this time he was flying it for 2 out of the 3 miles I was running there.

I  don't mean to sound like a cranky old lady but this flying drone started to bother me.  Even though I had my music on, I could still hear the annoying buzzing and maybe I was just being paranoid but it seemed like it was following me. Then I thought for a moment, "O gosh,I hope it isn't taking pictures".

As I stopped on the tree lined path to adjust something, the drone came right to this path in front of me and then just crashed. I admit I giggled a bit.  I looked over at the drone and then continued to run as I saw the man get up from the picnic table and start walking over to the path to collect his drone.

It wasn't only me that this thing was annoying. As I was running, I could tell their was a dog that seemed rather anxious because of this flying object. I know if Baylee were there, she wouldn't have liked it either.

So I sort of have mixed feelings about this. As just a person, I think this is a great spot for people to have fun and enjoy flying their drones and other remote controlled objects, but as a runner I find it quite annoying and almost feel like it's invading my space and my quiet time.

What are your thoughts on the topic? -M

  1. I could see how it would be annoying to have that flying around you while running. Especially if it seems like its following you!

  2. At the forest preserve where I run, there's a model airplane field. All these hobbists fly their planes and it gets quite loud. At least they are doing it in a designated spot. I'd be pretty annoyed by someone flying something randomly. "Get off my lawn!"

  3. I've noticed drones around more and more. I guess I don't care if they're up high enough but yeah, if they get in my space or are taking pics, that's pretty annoying.

  4. I have seen drones taking pictures at the start of a race, where I think they are kind of cool, but it creeps me out that someone could take pictures of you while you were running in a park.

  5. About 10 years ago, I was at a Halloween event thing w my kids and a remote control airplane went awry and hit me in the head. I had cuts all over my face and it was really scary. So not a fan! Now in the DC area there a regulations about drones so we don't see them too much anymore

  6. Drones are illegal around here - I live too close to the Pentagon and the White House. So, I've never had to deal with it. I hate them though.

  7. I think I'd be annoyed if they were flying them along the path, but not bothered if they kept it over an open space. If one was following me I might have to help it crash.

  8. The noise that drones make is the most annoying thing ever. I don't even like it that people are constantly on their phones on a bike path/park. I don't want to hear your conversations!

OTOH, a drone that doesn't make any noise would be pretty frightening, too.

  10. If they would be quiet, I don't think I'd mind them. When I'm able to hear annoying sounds over my music, that's when I draw the line. It's hard to zone out and enjoy things with all that buzzing.

  13. I suppose it's just like anything else annoying that could ruin our quiet runs. Cars, loud people on cell phones, barking dogs, anything really. I am like you that I do like peace and quiet when I run, so I could see myself being annoyed by it too. Okay, let's look at the bright side, at least no one was smoking on your path! People smoking around me ENRAGES ME.

    1. It wasn't so much the noise that bothered me, I think it was more the invasion of my space. Yes people smoking on a running path is also annoying!

  15. I agree! Drones are really annoying! I'm surprised they don't have a rule that they aren't allowed.
