My "Go to Meal" and a spiral question

This week's Friday 5 is about food.  I'm going to use this as an opportunity to ask some questions and get some opinions on a certain way to prepare certain foods. This is a topic I've been wanting to tackle for a while now but not quite sure how to make it a Friday 5, so just bear with me, okay?

1. This has been my "go to" meal this spring.  I've been buying zucchini like crazy and sauteing it with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives, and sometimes asparagus and a dash of seasoning.

2. I make the zucchini into pasta shape with the spiral contraption called the Veggetti.  I received it for Christmas but just started to use it this spring and I love it.  It's easy to use and not a pain at all to clean out. And because of the lid (shown on the side there), it makes it really safe to use and you can utilize almost all of your zucchini or whatever veggie you want to use.

3. The Veggetti makes two different sized pasta shapes depending on which end of the Veggetti you use. The one produces regular thickness (which they call "wide") and the other end produces a "thin" pasta shape.  If you are sauteing I would would use the wide instead of thin. The thin loses its shape pretty quickly. The wide holds up better in the frying pan.

4. BUT WAIT!!! The Veggetti not only produces spaghetti shaped pasta, it also produces cork screw shaped pasta.  I figured this out by accident.  Every once in a while as I am spinning the zucchini to make the long pasta, a corkscrew shaped one would fall out of the end of the contraption.  I figured if you spin the zucchini, it come out like spaghetti but if you push the zucchini through (with the help of the lid attachment that attached to the veggie) it would come out the bottom as corkscrew. But I've found that isn't always the case.

So, this brings me to my #5 of the Friday 5. If you have this tool, please share with me how you determine if you are making spaghetti shapes or corkscrew shapes with your veggies?  What other veggies do you you with this tool?   -M

This is not a sponsored post and even though some images came from Amazon, there are no affiliate links in this post. I just REALLY like the Veggetti and honestly wanted to get opinions on how others may have used it.

  1. So I also have a spiralizer, it's not the vegetti, but it's a similar contraption. Honestly with mine I just stick the zucchini in and hope for the best! I've never had a corkscrew one come out, I'm just left with a very awkward cone shaped zuccini innard that the spiralizer can't get past. I like that yours lets you choose the thickness, mine doesn't!

    1. That lid thing is great when you only have a nub of a zucchini left, it really grins it down!

  3. I got something similar for Christmas too but haven't used it yet. In fact, I'm not sure where I put it! But I really want to try it with zucchini.

  4. I've always twisted to use the spiralizer, so I will have to play with it and get back to you! Your dish looks yummy though.

  5. I think I have the same one! I actually haven't used it in like a year. I don't think I realized there were so many options, so I don't think I can answer your question!

    1. I actually didn't realize it made corkscrew shapes until they started falling out one day!

  6. I need to pull mine out & put it to good use - especially now that zucchini is coming back into season.
Yeah - I remember those little thick pieces coming out too - I think its just where it gets jammed up - if there's a trick to getting those all the time, fill me in.

  9. What a neat tool! I've been interested in getting a spiralizer, but the one I've seen is much bigger (you clamp it to your counter). I like how compact yours is - I may have to try it.

    1. I've seen the big ones too. Maybe they are for bigger veggies like eggplant?

  10. That is a really neat tool!! My parents have it and we use it for zucchini noodles when we make spaghetti. I'm not sure what other veggies they use it with, though!

  11. I have never made zoodles before. I definitely feel behind the wagon since it seems like everybody makes zoodles, lol.

  12. I love the veggetti - it gets a ton of use with my summer farmshare! I've never used the tiny corkscrews - just figured they were the throwaway middle, where all the mushy/seedy part ended up.

  14. It's so funny you posted about this because yesterday we made a zucchini bowl. I don't know what else to call it. We made zucchini fries then put ground turkey on them and covered them with parm and marinara sauce. It tasted like spaghetti!!

  17. I really need to get one of these. I'm having FOMO while you all are eating your spiralized zucchini. I'd make either shape, really.

  18. A Spiralizer is on my "want" list, but I haven't gotten one yet! I love zuke so much, I don't know why I'm waiting for a NEW way to eat it!

  19. Zucchini - one of my favorite veggies! I bought some more zucchini today after running out this week. It's especially good sauteed and then topped with tomato sauce and cottage cheese or melted cheese.

  20. I want one! I' hope to pick one up the next time I'm in the states.

  21. I have one, but have only used it for zucchini and am not very creative with it. I will try to sauté my zucchini because I usually boil it and it immediately goes soft and can disintegrate pretty quickly.
