Going off the deep end

Last week I went to visit a friend that I used to work with. She lives abut 45 minutes north of where I live. Friday evening she was scheduled to teach Aquatic Aerobics. I've never taken that kind of class so I thought I would give it a try. I told her the only swim suit I had was a bikini but she assured me that would be fine. I just didn't want to look awkward with the ladies there looking at me funny in their one pieces. When we arrived she brought a big bag of weighted belts to wear while we were in the water. I thought we would be standing in the low end of the pool and do a few stretches and kicks. Well we went right to the deep end where no one could touch. We started to do different kicks with our feet for awhile. I asked her if the class was a half hour. She replied, "no an hour." Wow! I thought "I am going to spend an hour in the deep end just trying to stay afloat". There was a point where I just wanted to go over to the wall and take a break but I didn't want to be the young one that had to take a break while all the other ladies older than me kept going. We finally went over to the wall and I thought oh good a break...Not!  We started doing kicks off the wall and push ups with our hands. Finally we went to the low end and finished with our stretches. It was a long class. I think half an hour would have been plenty.
The next day we planned to go on a long bike ride on a trail close to her house, Pine Creek. We biked about 10 miles then we stopped for lunch. I got a salad and it was not the healthiest but it was delicious. I thought all this biking, why not? We then biked the remaining 5 miles back to her house. After getting back to the house we thought it would be nice to float down the river and relax. Well it wasn't too relaxing. The river had no current and it seemed to take us forever to float down. We even had paddles to help us move along but that didn't help much. Not only was there no fast current there were places in the river that were so low that our butts were hitting the rocks at the bottom. After awhile I was getting anxious about getting to the end, so I flipped over on my raft and began kicking my feet to make some headway. We finally finished. It took us about an hour more than what was expected and we only went about two miles. My friend said, "It's a good think we didn't start down any further," and I agreed.

What's your level of aquatic fitness?  -L

  1. I'm tired just reading about your weekend! And I have to admit, I laughed at you not wanting to be shown up by the older ladies in the pool...funny how challenging water aerobics can be!

  2. That aquatics class sounds so tough! Can't believe it's geared towards older people. I don't know if I could make it through! Sounds like you had a fun and busy weekend. Have a great week!

    1. It was good. But I think a half an hr would have been sufficient.

  3. Wow, that does sound like a tough class. I have one ever done a couple of aqua aerobics classes, but they were really easy. I don't think I would have coped too well with that one.

    1. It was as hard as you made it I suppose. Some people were there just floating around And others actually doing the work we were told to do.

  4. The water aerobics class sounds tough! I've never done a class like that either. We went tubing a couple weeks ago and had a similar experience with the water being shallow enough to bump our butts on the bottom. And the times I flipped over I ended up scraping my feet up on the rocks.

    1. It wasn't as relaxing as I thought it would be. Especially since it was so shallow at points.

  5. I'm not much of a pool person so I'd get a workout in even without the weights.

  6. It's funny, my sister just started an Aqua Aerobics class and is really enjoying it. She did go in search of a more appropriate swimsuit to fit in with the class. LOL. They must have stepped those classes up in the last few years. I guess it's not your granny's class anymore. Since I'm a dog paddler, I'm guessing my level would be pretty low!

  7. Swimming is such a hard but great workout! I don't think I would have been able to stay afloat for an hour in that class, it sounds hard!!

  8. Swimming is exhausting. I haven't been in the water in so long to even KNOW what my level of aquatic fitness is - I would say that would make it VERY little.

    1. I'm not much of a pool person either. I just like dipping my feet in. And this was way more than that!

  9. Swimming can be a super great workout, that is awesome you lasted longer than I think I would have been able to!
Awesome bike ride too, from the picture it looks like a beautiful area!

  11. That sounds like a crazy workout, one of those fun but really hard. I enjoy swimming, and am good enough I think. Nothing crazy fast but I like it.

  12. I never took a water fitness class but I am sure it takes a lot of energy! I used to be on swim team growing up and spent all day at the pool in the summers... but now that I am older I really never lap swim! I totally understand- I would not want to be the young one swimming to the wall!

    1. I used to be on the swim team when I was in grade school. I was decent back then but haven't swam laps in ever. Luckily this was just treading water w stretches but idk if it was actually any easier.

  13. Whew! I agree 30 minutes would have been more than enough!

    1. Yes! Even though we were still working we were doing the same type of moves and started to get a little boring.

  14. I've never done a water fitness class but it sounds challenging! As I was reading this, I was thinking I'm not sure I old do an hour! The float also sounds like work! But it's nice that you got in some good workouts in new ways, plus with a friend to boot.

    1. It was nice seeing her since we don't get to see each other as often as we'd like. She is a very active person as well so I know we will always be doing something fun while we are together.

  15. Haha some of those aqua aerobics classes are no joke! I was swimming laps next to them once, enjoying their music when they started riding piggback on each other. Tres weird for my taste!

    1. We definitely didn't piggy back anyone...haha. Some people were complaining about our loud music. Of course it was the ones that aren't doing the work. Maybe if they were doing it with us that'd be the least of their worries.

  16. Wow that class sounds like a good workout!! Sorry about the lack of a current but that sounds like a pretty good workout, too!

    1. Yes, the floating ended up being more of a workout than what was expected.

  17. I did Aqua Zumba while I was pregnant with my daughter, and then sadly they discontinued the class. I liked it so much more than your typical aqua aerobics!
