Why I am being cheated out of my first marathon bib.

I'm still on a high after finishing my last Disney race for the year. When I go back to Disney in a little less than 100 days, I will be running my first full marathon. If all goes well, I will be able to call myself a marathoner. The Disney marathon is kind of special to me because it was my sister's first full marathon and it will be my first full marathon too.

I will display my medal proudly and I've seen all sorts of cool ways to show off my race bib. I could get it printed on a mug like Lacey did for her Boston marathon bib, I could have it printed on a pillow, on a medal display, or make coasters out of it. All sound like great ideas.

But then I remembered that I am doing the Goofy Challenge ( the half marathon one day and the full marathon the next).  Challenge participants only get ONE bib. That bib will say "Goofy Challenge" on it, NOT Walt Disney World Marathon.  Unlike my sister, I won't have that First Marathon bib. I have to say that this makes me a little sad. I'm pretty certain that this will be the only full marathon I will ever run and by golly I wanted a bib that said MARATHON on it.

And come to think of it I didn't have a TRUE half marathon bib this year either when I ran the glass slipper challenge, and I won't get one next year at the princess race or at Tinkerbell. I guess I need to stop doing these challenges!

I know it's only a silly piece of paper but does anyone else feel like this? ~M

  1. Interesting to think that you are getting gypped. I also ranGoofy as my first marathon and Dopey as my second and never for a minute thought I was gypped out of a bib. I am thrilled with the marathon medals and certainly you can do a shadowbox with your medal and a photo to commemorate this big event.

  2. All I could think of while reading this was: Holy crap, less than 100 days til the marathon!

  3. If it helps, Preston lost his first marathon bib. He had put it under a book to flatten it out after running the Disney World Marathon, and then we accidentally left it in the hotel room when we checked out. Oops!

  4. I feel the same way! I'm doing GSC next year and I'm bummed that we only get one bib. I'd love to make a display with a bib for each medal and then the challenge medal in the middle.

  5. ha interesting! Wondering why they do that? Still wow what an endeavor to do a half and then a full. That's impressive sister!

  6. Ah, but a Goofy Challenge Bib means so much more - and is much rarer, right? ;-)

    1. Amen - and as someone that ran the first one...I'm quite content having the Inaugural Dopey challenge bibs and medals (all of which I display proudly). Personally, they mean more with all they represent than having the marathon bib (though I do still have my first marathon bib, which was the Disney 20th anniversary one...seriously cool spinning medal). :-)

  7. I have never thought about that...I treasure my first marathon bib (heck, it's in a shadow box frame lol). But the Goofy Challenge is even bigger than a marathon so it still represents all that mileage you ran for the very first time! :0)

  8. Interesting that you ate so sure this will be your only marathon. I've often hear people say "never say never". Why are you so sure? Obviously people are different so I might be off the mark but when your first marathon is the Goofy Challenge...

  9. I would definitely feel this way in the moment, but I have no clue where my first marathon bib is now! It is PROBABLY in my house somewhere, but I can't be sure! Maybe there is something else you can save besides your medal and your Goofy Bib... I have saved shoelaces before. :)

  10. I think that what you are lacking in bibs, you are more than making up for in race shirts...and medals! You'll still have each of those to commemorate the individual races. My only issue with the combined bibs is that I end up looking like slept with it on by the second race morning. I just can't keep those things from getting wrinkled!

  11. Fewer runners will have those Goofy bibs, it's almost like a special club ;-)

    1. Many will have the bibs as that only takes a check - fewer will have all the medals, as that requires dedication, sweat, and heart.

  12. Aww! I get it. Weird that they only give you one bib for both races - after a half, my bib is usually extremely thrashed. It would be weird to pin it on another shirt and run with it again. But yes, you'll still have the all-important marathon medal, so there's that. :)

  13. I would definitely feel like that! But you'll still have your medal and other goodies! :)

  14. I agree. I wish Disney gave out separate bibs for all of the races in a challenge weekend. My bib always gets so wrinkled by the end of two races that I wish I just had 2! But on a different note I think I would be proud to have a Goofy bib because not only are you running a full marathon, you are running it right after running a half! That's definitely something to be proud of!

  15. I would be upset too... its Disney... they can't handle doing more then 1 bib? That's messed up. Mine are usually so worn out anyways, after 2 races, it would be in shreds! Dumb!

  16. That is odd they only give you one bib. They must thing that one bib is more special than the 2 bibs that is my guess. But at least you get different medals, if you enjoy collecting things medals are better than bibs. I have kept all my bibs, but I no longer hang them up, it's just the medals. I am saving my bibs for a future project, not really something I display. The more races you do, you'll enjoy those medals more and more and the bibs won't mean as much especially since in some races if the weather is crazy stormy they can get all but ruined before you finish the race:)
You're going to have such an awesome time doing the challenge through, I think its pretty sweet your doing it this way for your first marathon!

  17. Wow--sign me up!! Marathon at Disney?!!! YES!!

That does kinda stink you don't get the marathon bib--I'd be bummmed to. Grab a marker haha and write it on! ;)

  18. Isnt' there more prestige with a Goofy bib? It's the rockstar bib, a half and a full at the same time....ummm, badass. :)

  19. I was actually more concerned during GSC that I'd mess up or lose the bib in between the races! It seems that they could still give two bibs and just have a special one for the challenge that still said marathon or half marathon. Like "Goofy Marathon" and "Goofy Half Marathon" bibs.

  20. I got a bib for my first (MCM) but I've always been disappointed that both marathons I ran had ugly shirts, so I've never worn them. And, dude, you are doing Goofy. That's way more hardcore than a marathon. ;o)

  21. First thought is, typical runDisney cheapness. Second thought is, it's one less thing to keep track of. Third thought is, so you have to take it off of one shirt and pin it on the shirt for the next day? It's not something you'd forget, but I have a habit of just tossing my dirty race clothes into a plastic bag when I'm traveling. The bibs don't always come off before I pack them back up. I don't think I'd personally really care about the bib itself, but I'd be worried about it lasting through two events.

  22. Personally, I wouldn't worry about your bib saying "marathon" - YOU know that you are running your FIRST marathon, which is so so so exciting!!!! Plus, you are going to have a sweet medal!!!!! Plus, your runner's high will always remind that you ran a marathon in one of your favorite places :)

  23. Congratulations on the races! And sorry about the bib - that sounds disappointing. :-(

  24. Kudos to you in the first place for running a marathon!
