Has your running been effected?

Most of us are finding a few extra hours on our hands now that our social life and any other obligations outside of the home have come to a halt.  I am still working from home and on most days I put in more hours at home than I would at work but I am still finding some free time to get in some runs.

Running has just felt weird lately.
Our Governor has pretty much shut our state down but going for walks, hikes, and runs (and apparently fishing) is still allowed. However, I almost feel guilty driving to my favorite trail to run or take the dogs for a walk. I guess I worry about people wondering Where is she going?  or people pointing fingers saying Why isn't she following the stay at home orders?

So instead, I've been doing a lot of treadmill runs. I have the iFit Nordic Track treadmill and in years past I have subscribed to their virtual run maps which were awesome. I did a lot of my training for the NYC half marathon with this program because I could virtually run through Central Park, while watching the scenery and while my treadmill automatically adjusted to the appropriate inclines and declines.  I subscribed to this service for several years but to be honest it was sort of pricey considering the service didn't always run so smooth (no pun intended). I often had technical issues with it. So last year, I did not renew my subscription.

With many fitness companies now offering online classes or waiving subscription fees for online programs at this time, I am really surprised that iFit didn't make their program available too.  But anyway, I've found something else that I've been enjoying just as much.

Since I have been home, I've been finding some awesome virtual running videos on Youtube. These are awesome and they are free!  There are all sorts of scenic runs available. I've been doing the tranquil run through the wooded path and next week I might start the beach run. The only caveat is that since it is not connected to your treadmill like the iFit, it does not automatically change the incline and decline of your treadmill, which really isn't a big deal for me.

Some days I do a run near my home, but I don't prefer that route because it's all hills.

Other days I do take a chance and go to a near by park to do some stroller runs with the dogs. I went a few times this week (as did many other people) and I was sort of disappointed with all the more people who were wearing masks. I had my running buff on, so I was prepared. This is not an isolated trail in the woods. It is still a public place and although I was by myself, I still took precautions. Others should have too. Especially when they were walking with another person. I do have to hand it to one lady ( whom I saw on two different days) that was walking with her friend. She had a handkerchief around her face, but her friend had nothing.  I also don't understand folks who are still doing group runs and then documenting it on social media yet.  I know they say they are social distancing, but if all 8  of you can fit in the same picture to show how you are "social distancing", you are probably still too close!

So that's all I have to say about running, today anyway! Check out my IG story today if you want to see a Friday #WalkandTalk  I'm sharing a funny Easter story!

  1. Knock wood, my running has not (yet) been affected much. Our governor has shut pretty much everything, as well, but has not gone the "shelter at home" mandate yet. Basically, we all are sheltering in our homes because there's no place to go, but outdoor fitness is permitted (with the social distance parameters). Unfortunately, we've all seen the sheltering orders will still invite people to violate them, regardless of their location.

    1. It's nice that you also have some equipment at home too, but I do know how much you like being outside!

  2. I have been staying in my neighborhood. I just feel at this time it's actually better not to drive somewhere -- I know the park where I often ran has been very crowded (although they closed it to cars, so you have to know the outside the park parking lot -- which is tiny).

Anyhoo ... I've been here before. When Chester was really ill and I didn't want to add the extra time that driving takes. It's boring, but hopefully it's safe. The long runs are hard ... cause, yeah, my neighborhood is relatively hilly if you want to get in more than a few miles.

I don't wear a mask while out running or walking the dogs.Hopefully I'm doing the right thing.

    1. I've worn one of the running buff, and it is hard to run with it covering your face, especially on the days it's been warm out.

  3. Since I'm a solo runner almost all of the time, social distancing for my runs has come easily to me. Some of my favorite running places have been shut down but the forest preserves are still open, thank goodness! I go really early to avoid the crowds. I've been running some virtual races, which has taken on new meaning from the virtual races of the past. Trying to make the best of things.

    1. I'm sorry some of your running places have been shut down. I am wondering if they are going to do that here since they seem to be a bit crowded lately.

  4. I’ve been trying to be more active since I’m stuck at home all day. I’ve been driving to my runs and finding places that do not have a lot of people. So far so good. I wear a buff that I can pull up over my face if needed.

    1. Yes, I have a buff too and I'd rather run at the places I have to drive too because they are safer ( no traffic).

  5. I am missing running w my group terribly! I am just staying in my neighborhood which is quite hilly. Doing shorter runs and using my bike and gym more.

  6. Good idea about the you tube running videos, I hadn't thought about that. The way it's impacted me for the most part is that the trails are more crowded so I've just been running on the boring neighborhood sidewalks :(

    1. Yes, check out those videos, you could use them with a bike too! I usually like running neighborhood streets with sidewalks, probably because my neighborhood does not have sidewalks :(

  7. Our lakefront and parks are closed but I can run the street through the park from my apartment. I'm finding it really stressful and only go in the morning. I can see from my window and people are running right be each other. I'm really worried about what happens when the weather is nicer. Tons of people were out and really close together when it was nice earlier this week. I don't have a treadmill but I've been doing online workouts at home. I miss my running friends and our time together. Zoom calls are not cutting it!

    1. I can see where scenic places like your lake front would be super crowded during a time like this and even more so as the weather continues to warm up. Stay Safe!

  8. The only thing that changed is that I was able to transition from the treadmill to outside earlier this year because not having to commute means plenty of daylight time before work to run. So that's been nice. I do appreciate running a little more right now, that's for sure.

  9. I read about the trout fishing thing is the newspaper. Isn't that weird? The only thing that has changed about my running now is that I do more of it since the shutdown. I can't go to the gym to do Body Pump or swim, so I might as well run. We have been doing a lot of trail running lately. It is such a pretty time to be out in the woods. Stay safe! Hope you have a wonderful Easter.

  10. Aww, taking the puppies out for a run is so cute! My running has been affected in a positive way - I've been walking pretty much every day, and a couple times I've actually run a very short portion. So who knows, I may come out of this being able to run again!

    1. Aww, I do hope Shelley that you will be able to get back to running regularly but in the meantime kudos for getting out to walk every day.

  11. They closed the parks for people driving in Louisville this week so people could have access to the whole road & be able to spread out while exercising

  12. I’ve been running in my neighborhood - and don’t see anyone else out by 7 am - or on my treadmill. I wish I had done more trail running when I could.

  14. Ugh, running does feel the same. For me it is more mental than anything else. I'm just paranoid and staying home unless I have to go for groceries. I guess it just feels like this virus has taken the freedom I felt with running, so I have been doing mostly elliptical. I am ready for this craziness to be over.
