Browning Ross 10 Miler

We put great thought into what we wanted to share for this week's blog post given the climate of our nation right now. We don't want to be insensitive to what is going on with COVID-19 but I'm sure you really don't need to hear more about it from another blogger, so for that reasons we decided to continue with another running post.

The other week I ran the final race of the Browning Ross Winter Series.
This series ended with a ten miler, although it also had the 5k as an option as well. With the 10 miler you received a t-shirt with your $25 entry.  I much preferred the $7.00 entry for the 5k with no t-shirt! I was really hoping I won in my age group because I heard in the past that these were legit awards and not just snacks from the back of the truck.

The one nice thing about this race is it's at 1 pm. I like that because I can sleep in but it does feel like it consumes your day when races are later in the day.

It was another fairly low key race with less than 100 participants.  We drove the course on the way there so I kind of knew the way. There were no road closures so it was opened to traffic.  Luckily it was an out and back so that helped and the roads we ran on were not super busy. They were mostly country roads.

At the start of the race I was feeling good but knew I had a long way to go so I was just going to pace myself. I saw this guy running beside me that I saw in the few 5ks I had done that runs a similar pace as me. He asked What time are you aiming for? For not running a ten miler race for over two years I didn't know what to expect so I said around an hour and twenty minutes
( because that was my last one) what about you I asked? He said little quicker than that hopefully. We continued running together when both our gpps went off and we both knew we were going a little too fast so we held back a bit. After a few more miles he ended up passing me.

I was approaching the half way point where the turn around was and looked over and saw only one female ahead of me. I continued running and looked to the other side and saw that the next female was way behind me by now. I kind of knew I was good unless I crashed and burned! By this time I was just trying to catch up to the other guy I was running with at the beginning but with the big hill at the end I didn't have much in the tank. I finished close to a minute behind him making me second female overall and first in my age group! I'll take it! There was no way I was beating that girl that was ahead of me. She actually received first overall and I later found out she was from a D1 track school!

They began the award ceremony and the first overall male and female got a bottle of wine and a gift card to the local running store.  The Age Group award finishers received one small bottle of wine that comes in a 4 pack. For placing in an Age Group I kind of expected a little more, especially for the $25 entry fee. Oh well! I guess next time I'll just stick to the 5k.

How do you feel about races later in the day?

If the race is a longer distance or more money do you expect more? -L

  1. OMG they broke up a four pack of tiny wine for the AG winners?? That's funny but kind of irritating, too. Still, you did great for that 10 miler - sounds like that series was a good one to participate in.

    1. Yes I was disappointed in that wine but a nice winter series.

  2. Congrats on that AG placement!

I have to echo what Shelley said regarding the wine--that's ridiculous! You can get bottles of wine for cheap...

  3. That is quite a price jump for the 10-mile distance! The afternoon start time is interesting...right after lunch LOL

    1. Well I hate huge lunch afterwards since I didn't want to eat much beforehand.

  4. Nice job & congrats! You are rocking all your races!

I don't think I'd enjoy a 10 miler later in the day -- not on a warm day, anyway. 10 miles is a long way to go! I swear sometimes even just a short training run takes a lot of time. At least the way I do it (and I'm not talking about pace!;)

Since I pretty much never expect an AG award, I'm not sure what I'd like. I've placed once or twice, but for me it's a big occasion when I do, not a regular occurrence.

    1. Yes, sleeping in was nice, but for a distance that long it would have been nice to start a bit earlier in the day.

  5. You may be the only one w a race recap to read! In the winter months I would probably appreciate a later start time. Have never thought much about the prizes. Congrats! Stay well

  6. A small bottle of wine from a 4-pack does seem like a pretty small award for an AG but I guess paying only $7 for the race (with no T-shirt) doesn't give the race organizers a lot of money to buy awards with. Congrats in coming in 1st in your AG and 2nd overall. that's a big accomplishment! I like the later start time. It gives plenty of time to get up, eat, and digest breakfast before the race.

    1. That's why I thought paying the $25 entry for the ten miler we would receive better age awards.

  7. Congrats on that age group win! I generally like the later start times so I don't have to wake up too early, but you're right that it feels like it consumes the whole day that way.

  8. Seems like a decent haul for $25 all things considered. I would not like a late start. I did run Boston when it started at noon (3 times I think) and it was so weird to miss all the meals and run a marathon midday!

  9. I can't imagine running a marathon at 12. Kudos to you!

  11. Congratulations!!! That's awesome and how great that the entry fee was so cheap. Around here they are always well over $50 and often $80-100. It's always nice to find that person just slightly ahead and try to keep up to them as best as one can. I was really hoping to run 10km this year but I am 99% it will be cancelled. Oh well the $ will end up going to a good cause, mental health.
