Just a little melody...

This post may be a little less about running and more about getting to know me. but hey, we can have those posts once in a while, right? Anyway, since the theme for the TOTR topic is about Moms, this one sort of fits.

My Grandmother has been gone for 10 years now (but it hardly seems that long). One of the things I remember about her is that she always had music playing. In the kitchen she had one of those under the cabinet radios with a tape deck. That little radio played Country music day and night. She had it set to the local country radio station WILQ. She won quite a few radio contests from that station too.

When I got married and got my own house, one of the first things we did was put up an under the cabinet radio in our kitchen. Ours had a CD player instead of a tape deck.  We don't have it set to country music, but I do have it on day and night. Over the years I've come to say that I leave it on for Baylee so she doesn't get lonely, but the truth is, I keep it on even if I'm home too.

Last year for Christmas we got a new (more compact) radio for under the cabinet. No CD player in this one but is has a USB port (funny how things evolve).   The other day some strong winds must have effected our local radio station because our usual channel would not come in.  When I came home from work, the radio was set to a country music station (Scott had set  it earlier). That just made me smile cus I hadn't heard country music in years!  When I say country music I mean Tim McGraw, George Strait, and Reba, and people from back in the day. I have no idea who the popular country artists are today.

So anyway, this music was putting me in such a good mood, that when I got in my car to drive to the trail, I put on that same station so I could continue listening. When I got to the trail I tuned my ipod to that same country station. As I ran, my mind was instantly flooded with memories of good times from this era of my life. Not only did my grandma listen to country music but a few close friends from high school did as well.  Wow, this really took me back and made me smile. What a great way to switch up my run from my normal running play list.

So I guess it really is true when Clint Black says Ain't it funny how a melody can bring back a memory, take you to a different place and time, completely change your state of mind!

Do you know this song ^ ?  Did you sing the lyrics?   Is there a certain type of music that you associate with a certain part of your life?

We are linking up with the gals from TOTR.

  1. Oh heck yes, certain songs bring back so many great memories! I was really into country music when we first moved to Texas in the 90s and saw a lot of singers in concert...good times! Funny enough, I never saw Clint Black, though.

    1. I actually saw a few country concerts but Clint was not one of them either!

  2. When I hear oldies, I am sometimes transported back to junior high school (no middle school in those days), and some really happy memories. Thanks for making me think of that!

  3. Oh my gosh, it's amazing what memories are evoked by a song! The older I get, the crazier it is. Certain songs will take me back to my teenage years. I actually have some of them on my running playlist. Maybe they make me run like that too?

    1. When I hear one on the radio I think about putting it on my playlist but then of course I never do.

  4. So many times, I'll hear a random song and I'll instantly remember where I was when I first heard it (no matter how many years ago it's been). When I ran my first marathon, my youngest daughter helped me set up my music on my Ipod...and one new song we added was Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise." Every time I hear that song now, I remember mile 20 of the marathon, when it popped up ;-)

  5. Awww, how sweet!

I use Alexa for my music at home. I like a quiet house, in general (and don't know what I'll do when Mr. Judy retires and always leaves the tv on), but I also enjoy listening to music when doing boring stuff like cleaning or getting furkid meals together when we go away.

There are songs that invoke strong memories in me. Unfortunately, they're often sad memories. :(

  6. Awww good times! I love it when I'm reminded of sweeter times, especially when my grandparents are involved. Your explanation of the new under the counter radio made me giggle - it is super funny how the times change! My grandmother had one of those too (with the tape deck)!

  7. Old Country reminds me of childhood too - all my dad would play in his garagae or in his truck. Dolly was always playing on albums in our home too. They just started a new local old country station - i'll turn to it sometimes & am shocked I remember the lyrics to so many of the songs.

  8. This is a great story! I love how certain songs/smells/tastes can remind of us people or different eras of our lives. There are certain songs I used to listen to on repeat during my early 20s and when I hear them, it really takes me back!

  9. It's not radio, but I remember my grandparents always had a candy jar out in their home in Austin. I loved their home and loved visiting for the day (when we lived in Austin too). I think my love of ranch houses stems from that one.

  10. After years of hard rock and classic rock, I went back to my country music roots. I love the old school local "classic" country station here called The Possum. LOL. Rock is fun, but I find country more calming (and amusing!).

  11. I love country music. It's what I grew up listening too as well. Songs definitely bring back memories for me too. (And lately all the stores around here play music from when I was in high school and college and the flood of memories is crazy.

  12. I agree with Clint Black. Memories are evoked by the tiniest, oddest things. My mom was the country music lover in the family and we always had to have it on in the car. Back then it was Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn.

  13. That is sweet that you leave music on for Bailey when you are not home. Nice to have that connection with your grandma like that. I love it when random things remind me of mine
