Whenever you head out for a run, do you have to double check and make sure you have everything? Have you ever made it to the start of your running route and forgot your Garmin? Your ipod or earbuds?
I feel like I am constantly gathering up all the things I need for my run. I rarely walk right out my door and start my run, I usually drive to a designated spot. For that reason I keep everything in a little tote bag. I've never carried a gym bag (even when I went to the gym) but this tote bag is the perfect size where I can easily grab what I need without digging around.
A little background story of this tote. This was a Christmas gift from a friend way back when. It has to be at least 20 years old. I don't ever remember using it as a purse or a tote then. I was on the verge of getting rid of it a few years ago but decided it would be perfect for my running essential. I ALWAYS use it now. So glad I held on to it.
My running essentials.
My phone -Sometimes I run with it, sometimes I don't, but I try to always have it with me in the car.
My ipod AND earbuds -There were times where I actually forgot one or the other. This is when the phone comes in handy. At least if I have my earbuds, I can listen to music on my phone.
My Road ID - Not only for safety reasons, but as of lately I've been clipping my ipod on it.
Garmin -This is a given. if I don't have my Garmin, I've lost my motivation to run. I know that is So wrong!
Pepper Spray- Not sure if I would need this for a personal encounter or an animal encounter. Thank Goodness I've never had to use it.
Personal Alarm - Same as above.
Water bottle
Sunglasses
Running belt /Roo pouch
Sometimes GU- Depending on how far I plan to run. Needless to say I haven't packed GU in several months!
Facial Wipes- These come in handy if I need to run an errand on the way home from a run, or stop at Starbucks for a frosty post run beverage.
This has now become my running tote and most of the time I just keep what I need in there unless the electronics need to be charged.
Seems like a lot of stuff just for a run, huh?
Do you feel like you have to "pack" for your run? Do you drive to your run spot or do you run right out your door? -M

This is a great idea! I run from home so I don't need to pack my stuff. But I do have a place where I keep it all. Rob leaves his running stuff all over the house and can never find anything!
ReplyDeleteSounds like Rob needs a tote or a bin of his own to put his running stuff in!
DeleteI love that you keep everything organized in your little tote. I keep my running stuff organized in baskets in our laundry room. I lay it all out on the washing machine the night before my run. When I meet my friends, I drive there; but otherwise, I just head out the back door. I'm lucky that our side yard is just a few steps from one of our many community running trails. I haven't been taking my pepper spray with me lately. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to live right beside a running trail. You are so lucky!
DeleteI don't have a running tote--I usually just head out the door from home. I keep everything on a little table in the kitchen--it was the boys' play table but now is just a table for all the stuff we don't want to put away.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to have a specific place for our running stuff. Sometimes I mess myself up if I take something out to charge it and then I think, "Where did I put that?"
DeleteI have a bag for my Saturday runs, but the rest of the time I wing it since I'm running in my neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteDo you keep all your run stuff in that bag so you have it for your neighborhood runs?
DeleteI usually only pack for a run if it's long. If it's just an easy run or jog I just grab my phone and go!
ReplyDeleteCan you run right out your door and go? I obviously don't take my bag on my run when I leave from my house but I still make sure I have the garmin, the phone, the ipod, etc!
DeleteI always laugh at how much stuff there is for a sport that people say, "you just have to walk out of the door"
ReplyDeleteHaha, I always need to make sure I'm prepared. I can never just run on a whim!
DeleteOh God, for such a simple sport getting all the gear together can seem overwhelming at times. And I do have a tote, too (which is also my gym bag that I use when I go to the gym to swim).
ReplyDeleteI both run out my door & drive to run (because my neighborhood isn't exciting and it's hard to get a longer run in in it.
Yea, I can't run very far near my home either.
DeleteMy favorite bad is duck taped together but I refuse to give it up and it is full - most of the stuff you have.
ReplyDeleteI never run outside my door - I drive to an interesting route.
Yea, running near my home is pretty boring too!
DeleteDo you always carry your pepper spray and alarm?
ReplyDeleteWhen I run by myself I do.
DeleteI need to get in the habit of that
DeleteI usually run out my front door... I have a drawer in the kitchen that I keep most of my stuff like sunglasses, running belt, earbuds, etc.
ReplyDeleteMost of the time I run right out the door! I do have a "run bag" that I keep in the trunk of my car with extras in it. I hate to not have something on race day :-)
ReplyDeleteI have a large tote similar to yours that I leave by the garage door with seasonal running items in there and then I just grab what I need that day.
ReplyDeleteMy parents gave me a Disneyland D&B tote for Christmas a few years ago. Since I bring it to work every day, I also use it as my gym bag. I haven't used an actual gym bag since I got my tote.
ReplyDeleteI've driven to places to run before. But I don't have a tote. I usually just throw on my clothes and head out the door or into the car to get to the trailhead LOL nothing fancy. Mostly because now that I am running mornings again, some days (okay most) I consider myself lucky to not keep hitting the alarm LOL LOL
ReplyDeleteThat's smart though keeping all your stuff in one easy place to grab!!!
I use a Chicobag Sling to carry my stuff. Sometimes I drive to the trail and packing everything there. I also use it when I go to the gym. It is big enough to carry a lot of stuff and I like that it is a messenger style bag.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I do run out the door but make sure I have my belt, phone, and keys.
I always kept everything in a tote before my injury and now that I'm healed, this is a great reminder to put it together again! I also keep a list on my phone, (over-planner alert,) of things to take with me on my runs at home since I'm always forgetting something, like chapstick or tissues.
ReplyDeleteI love that you keep your bag so simple and nice! I have been meaning for a long time to get a runner id!
ReplyDeleteI run after work, so on those day I pack my bookpack with my change of clothes, and an extra change of clothes for after the run.
