You are more places than you think.

When we first started our blog, we also started other social media accounts to follow. First there was a facebook page Fairytales and Fitness and then there was twitter @Fairytalesnfit, (because our full name was too many characters) and finally Instagram @Fairytalesnfit.   I think that is enough and I don't plan on engaging on any other platforms.

At that time,

Lacey I and sort of shared these accounts since it was for the blog. After a while Lacey started her own account @Lacers02 with her running and traveling and I took over the @fairytalesnfit as a personal account.

For a while now I've been playing with the thought of changing my Instagram and Twitter name to something a little more personal yet still keeping the dignity of the blog.  My name is too long to add so thought of just using my initials. Turns out someone already has @MSfairytales and MSfairytalesnfit is too many characters for Twitter (the idea is to keep the Twitter and Instagram names the same).  I've been racking my brain of different combinations this week and have not come up with anything so perhaps I will stay @fairytalesnfit for another few years!

With that being said,  I did a Google search just to see what would come up if I searched @fairytalesnfit ( I did this with other names I was considering too).  I thought of course our blog would come up and my Twitter and Instagram, which they did, but so did so much more.

My Instagram photos showed up on sites I didn't even know existed.

Yooying, what the heck is this?  I clicked on the link and of course all my photos are there!  It's actually set up like Instagram and has all the same info.

Picdeer, Pictarama, webgram, and a whole list of others are also hosting my social media photos as well.

I understand if we comment on other people posts we are essential leaving a link and our carbon footprint is everywhere.  However,  I feel like we have a responsibility to ourselves to know where all we are publishing our pictures/content. When I purposely only have accounts on several social media platforms, I expect my content to only stay there.  Obviously I know this is not true, because once we push "publish" who knows where it all goes.  Same goes with our blog content. I've seen it show up on other sites as well. Go ahead and google your blog or your social media handles and see where all it is published!  -M

P.S  If you have any suggestions on new social media handles for me (something I can use professionally yet sticking with the theme of our blog) please let me know!

  1. It's scary where one's name appears on social media, and under what "content." I'm always surprised when I get a notification regarding Twitter, because I don't do much on that platform other than "sharing" my Insta posts with it. I remember getting a notification, years ago, that Long John Silvers (the restaurant chain!) was following me...not sure if I was flattered or insulted LOL

    1. OMG,,,they were following me too and I thought that was so weird. I should check and see if they still are. I would have no idea why my tweets would be of interest to them...lol

  2. ...and this is why I rarely if ever post pics of my kids anywhere. Stuff gets stolen...and used in places I never authorized...a lot. I've had to pursue legal action to get sites to stop stealing my content on numerous occasions. It's scary.

    1. Yea, I would never share pics of my children either. My dog pics show up on other sites but usually they give me credit and sometimes I find it flattering. Could you share more about your legal battles on your blog?

    2. Marcia, I think you're very wise. I think people are far too cavalier with photos of their kids. It's a scary world out there.

  3. Interesting, yet very scary! I think over the past couple of years, we've all learned that nothing on the web is private. I'm always super careful of what I post so it doesn't come back to haunt me.

    1. Me too, or at least I hope I am. I guess that's one reason our blog content has become less and less.

  4. I've given up on worrying about where my blog content goes. I just don't have time to get worked up about. It does make me think twice about sharing #sweatyselfies though.

I find it so hard to think up social media handles. I think you'd be fine with something based on your name.

    1. Haha, on the sweaty selfies! Who needs all those unflattering selfies out there on the web!

  5. It's really crazy what you find when you do a search for your name on the internet. I've had a few instances where I've found some of my blog content on some weird websites and have had them remove my content.

  6. Oddly enough, we were just talking about this. About the time Mr. Judy visited his mom & sister, went out to lunch, and there was this little digital kiosk on the table showing some trivia. A question came up about calico cats.

Mr. Judy thought hmmmm, that looks like our Cleo. And look, those couches kind of look like ours. And then he realized that it WAS our cat and our photo. He started to do some searching, and it turned out Cleo was all over the Internet!

  7. I've seen some of my blog posts copied word for word (and image)! People are crazy!

    How about MerandaFTF or MSFTandFit?

  8. Social media is such a blessing and such a curse. I try to be very careful with what is shared, but at the end of the day, if someone out there wants it badly enough, they will find a way.

I am terrible at names, so I don't have any great suggestions.

  9. I am almost afraid to look... but here I go. no telling what I'll find

  10. My blog has been copied for years on one site and I can't get it removed. So yeah, we are definitely more places than we realize, which is why I try to not share on social media anything that I don't care if the entire world knows about. My brother is an internet privacy expert and he won't show his face on FB because of the facial recognition apps. I probably drive him crazy with what I show, but hey, that's what siblings are for, right?

  12. I am pretty nonchalant about what I post. I guess I should be more careful.

  13. I am definitely going to try this. Thank you for the information. This is pretty scary!

  14. How weird! I’ve never heard of all these other sites. Strange that our content can just end up in random places like that.

  15. Uh oh I am scared to do this!!! Okay, I did it and the only thing that comes up is my blog and some youtube videos from youtube! Maybe because I don't have insta I am less places???

  16. I kind of assume that anything you post on a blog or on IG is everywhere! I try to be careful about locations until I have left them. My kids were already teens when I started all of this but I am still careful about posting pics of them around. My blog name was too long for IG as well but I have them linked so that works

  17. Girl, I am in the SAME exact boat with wanting to change my handles and them already being taken. On twitter, my blog name is too long and someone already has karenseal. I looked up their account and they haven't even tweeted since like 2013. Jason said I should send them a message and ask if I could have my name back! HAH! As far as the internet goes...it's crazy to think where our information has been published. I try to be as careful as possible, but you never know!
