How does the day run away?

Do you find that there is a difference between how you SHOULD train and how you are ACTUALLY training?

I am the first to admit that I don't ever follow a training plan. Yes, I should, but I just never made the time to look for one to follow. I read a lot of Runner’s training blogs and they get up first thing in the morning to get their run out of the way. I guess for most people that have a 9-5 job they want to just get it out of the way, because if they don’t do it then, it won’t happen.  For me I feel like I am the opposite. Every time I force myself to get up early for a run, I feel miserable the rest of the day. I am so tired and don’t feel like doing anything, which usually results in napping the rest of the afternoon. So needless to say it does not re-energize me.

This is just one example of how getting in a training run goes for me................

The other day I slept in until 10:30am and it was lovely. I thought about going for my run but since I got this new watch I was told that there was an update that needed to be done.  So I call Garmin. Of course wait time is up to 20 minutes……here we go! Finally I got through and told the representative my problem. We were on the phone for over an hour trying to figure it out. He claims that I need to do an update on my phone and I couldn’t do it while I was talking to him on it. I asked if he could call me back in about ten minutes just in case that didn’t work so I would be able to talk to the same person that knew what was going on. He tells me that he is not allowed but if I call back there are notes in my record explaining the problem and that anyone could help. So of course that did not fix the problem so I call back, and again another 20 minute wait.

This time I called on a land line so they wouldn’t be able to use that reason again. I get someone new so have to explain my problem all over again. He tries to do some more updates but cannot seem to figure it out either. He then proceeds to say that this has been an issue with some watches and IT department has been looking into the problem and that if they find anything out they would call or email me back. I asked what the time frame would be, and he couldn’t give me an answer. During all this wait time while I was on the phone I did manage to clean up and dust my whole bedroom. After all this I didn’t even feel like going for a run, but I told myself I had to get out there.

I finally got dressed(half the battle). I got my hydration pack out and grabbed my Ipod. After getting everything ready for my run, I was hungry again. I kept delaying this run. After eating half of a power bar I was finally out the door about 2pm.  The temperature was pretty warm, high 80s with humidity but I was going to get this run done! The night before I downloaded new podcast from Another Mother Runner to listen to. Even though I am not a mother I can relate to their material. It is a great podcast and makes the time fly by. Before I knew it I was five miles in and knew my turnaround point was coming up soon. I filled up my water bottle at the fountain and ate the rest of my power bar before heading back home. I ended with 11 miles…score!

I came home to find a missed call on my phone.  It was from Garmin. I thought maybe they solved my problem, but why wouldn’t they leave a message? So I call back again and wait another 20 minutes to get someone on the phone.  Of course I got a new person and had to explain my problem all over again. Finally it was fixed.

By this time it was going on 6pm. Where did the day go?  I’d like to think I had a productive day by getting my long run in, even when I did sleep in until 10:30.

Would have you been able to motivate yourself to do a long run at 2 in the afternoon?  Or would have you just thrown in the towel and say next time?

We will be linking up with the gals from TOTR.

  1. I have fiddled around on the weekends and have delayed long runs. It just depends how late I sleep and what I have going on. That must have been so frustrating about your Garmin! I really hate calling customer service.

  2. Before baby, I used to piddle around at home and delay my long runs all the time. Now I try my best to not delay them, though sometimes the delays are inevitable because of the baby. But I'm certainly more conscious of it now than I used to be.

    1. I'm sure you need to be on more of a schedule now with the little guy.

  3. Haha! Story of my life!! Getting out the door is the hardest part!

  4. I am a first thing in the morning runner - if I wait around, the run doesn't happen.

Hopefully your Garmin is good to go now - what a frustrating series of phone calls!!!

    1. Luckily I didn't have anything else going on that day. I think if I did I would have been a bit motivated to get out there earlier.

  5. I'm definitely much more consistent about getting my runs in when I run in the morning! But it's a bit tougher now since I don't like running in the dark and it's staying dark later so I don't have time before leaving for work. That sure sounds like a frustrating experience with Garmin :(

  6. Geez, Garmin's customer support sounds awful...it would have been really tough for me to get out of the door after dealing with all of that, but better late than never!

  7. Two reasons that I like to run in the morning - I don't want problems that come up to get in the way and right now it's cooler in the mornings. Glad your Garmin is fixed!

  8. Ah I would have been pretty frustrated with Garmin. I'm glad you got it fixed! I'm not a fan of afternoon runs now that I'm so used to running in the mornings, but if I had to get a run in and 2pm was the only time, I would have gone and run it, just to get it done!

    1. Yes it is. But I hate setting my alarm to get out first thing in the morning.

  10. Wow what a mess! I'm glad they finally solved the problem but geeze that's crazy! About the run, it depends what time of year - summer, no I definitely would not go for a run at 2 pm...I guess it really all depends on the temps and humidity here!

  11. I am with you, I just feel terrible when I have to run so early. I am wiped the rest of the day. To each his own I guess!

  12. I'm with you on the early morning runs. I'm full of admiration for the folks who get up and run at 5am. I'm afraid I prefer my bed at that time of the morning.

I've definitely had days when I've not got out the door until after lunch having planned to go at 10am... I don't know what happens but sometimes it just does!

  13. I like early morning running, even though I hate actually waking up, LOL But right now I get too bed too late and have school in the mornings so I have opted for evening running at least for this semester.
I don't follow training plans either and never really have. I'm kinda one of those I know what I need to do, and do it and generally hope I feel good and can get a little extra in too, but at the worst the minimum. But yes sometimes I fall into that not training as I should either, for that reason alone is why I cancelled the fall marathon I had entered this year.
That's crazy about Garmin support, I think I would have just given up and tossed it for a while, LOL

    1. I was so determine to figure it out, and the crazy part was it wasn't even Garmin's problem, it was syncing with my phone, but they still figured it out......eventually.

    1. That is how my running buddy is, so if I plan to go with him, I know I have to get up so early. Sometimes I do, just so I have someone to run with.

  15. Ha yes I can totally relate! At least you finally made it out there and got in 11 miles in the heat!

  16. I can so relate to this! The hardest part for me really is getting started - I have to kick my butt out of the door!

  17. I can guarantee you I wouldn't be out running in that heat at 2pm. What a PIA with Garmin!

    1. Between the heat and the Garmin, I almost didn't do it, but am glad I did.

  18. That is a good rule about getting dressed and going. Half the time I am already in workout clothes lounging around the house.

  19. Haha. I probably would have too, but knew I was't able to do it the next day.

  20. I want to lose weight, and I know that, running/walking is imp. Yet, that first step still is hard for me. After all these years too.

  21. Wow! There's no way I'd go out for a long run at 2pm. I'm seriously impressed that you can do that!! I do my shorter runs in the afternoon after work, but long runs are only in the morning for me.

  22. I'm an early bird, so I can get my run done Saturday or Sunday morning without losing the day. BUT if I miss a run, by 2pm, I throw in the towel and give myself a rest day. I run after work during the week, but prefer earlier runs on the weekends. Each weekend afternoon is either for vegging by myself or vegging with friends.

    1. Oh I hear, I love veggin' out on the weekends. Good thing this was during the week.

  23. Hey, your method works for you and there's nothing wrong with that!! I sometimes have to get my long runs in at odd times too because of my work schedule or the kids' schedules. I sometimes run at 3 different times a day because that's the only way to get in all the miles. We have to do what works for us! Good for you for getting it done!

  24. Going to be honest - the last time I slept in until 10:30, I was deathly ill with ... I don't even remember, but I was sick. There is absolutely no way I could do a long run at 2PM, especially in the summer months in Florida. However, that's the great thing about running: you go when it works for you. Personally, getting my run done early and having it out of the way leads to me feeling more energized and productive, but that's not how it works for everyone. Glad you got your Garmin problem resolved!

I can do 4-6 milers in the evening, but not much more than that.

  26. Always, everything adds up and up and next thing you know it is bedtime and you have no idea where the day went.

  27. That is so true. The day goes by so fast, unless you are at work....lol.

  28. So frustrating that you had to spend so much time dealing with Garmin! I've had similar experiences with customer service, in general. And yes - during marathon training season, pretty much my entire weekend would revolve around getting my long run in. Between going to bed early, fueling, stretching, hydrating, the actual run, showering, and refueling, that really took up the entire day!!!
