The Great Race Project

run disney

The other day I posted on Instagram that I had a little project brewing. It looked a little like this.

I knew I needed to update my race wall in order to have a place to hang my new Goofy Challenge medals. My medal displays were getting filled up and starting to look a little cramped and quite frankly a little messy. That meant it was finally time for me to hang my Coast to Coast display rack, but that also meant I had to move some other things around that I previously had up.

My Coast to Coast medal display: The empty space will be for my Tinkerbell medal and my Coast to Coast medal.

So you may be wondering what all the colored paper had to do with my race project. Well, after I hung the display rack up ( I measured, leveled, drilled and hung it up all on my own by the way. Yup, I'll be asking for a little tool kit for Christmas this year..lol) anyway, after I hung it up, I noticed that you couldn't read the words very well (because they were cut out). Perhaps if I had a wall that was painted a brighter color ( instead of this awful wall paper that I won't get into right now) it might have shown up better. So, I cut out strips of paper (the acid free scrapbook paper) and placed it behind the words.

I did the same thing with my "Magical Miles" display as well. This one was a little trickier since I used a different color behind each letter. It kind of looks like it was painted that way don't way think?

I have a fresh new display now for my Goofy medals and I have room to hang up my Glass Slipper Challenge medals when I earn them later this month.  As I was cleaning my closet out I found this Disney picture frame that I never even pulled out of the box. It had to be from one of our trips at least 10 years ago. I forgot I even had it so it was a nice surprise. Since it was silver, I thought it would be perfect to hang near my medal display. I have it hanging off the display right now but I do plan on actually hanging it on the wall soon.

Gone for a run display

If you saw the picture of my race wall last year, you may remember that this medal display said "Magical Miles" and I had the Disney Princess medals on it.  Since I was re-decorating here, I decided to now use this display for all the Rock n Roll medals I have. I inserted pictures from our last Rock n Roll races to cover up the "Magical Miles". I alternated the lengths of the ribbons so each medal would hang evenly and not completely cover the other.

And then of course I hung some of my race certificates. They don't look like they are hung evenly in this picture but believe me, they are. I measured.

Things are a little different than the last time I showed my Race Wall.  When I first started a race wall I thought it might be a little "too much" but I'm starting to like it. It only takes up one wall in my dressing room and it's not overbearing. Since this room is upstairs, I'm really the only one that sees it anyway. Looks like I have lots of room to add to it too.

My sister and I were talking about this the other day and we were wondering if anyone else out there gives so much thought to how they display their medals?  For example, I told her that I couldn't just put the Disney Medals on the Coast to Coast rack because it actually says "Coast to Coast and Everywhere in Between". So that means I need to put some of the "between" medals ( from non Disney races) on it too.  If I didn't it would just be a Coast to Coast display, right?

Did you understand my theory on that?   Do you put much thought in to how you display your medals?

  1. Wow, you have a huge display and lots of medals for all those miles. I do not hang my certificates, but have them laminated to put in a book. My medal race is very full, but I bought the extra bar to go underneath for additional medals. I put the Disney ones on the top and other medals on the bottom section. I probably don't spend quite as much time planning my shrine, but I do have special plans for my marathon major medals. This year baring any problems I will be earning my Boston and NYC medals. Now they will need a special spotlight! LOL

    1. I keep forgetting that I can actually get the extra bars. I think i'll be doing that from now on. I agree, you will need a special place for Boston and NYC for sure!

  2. I love how your updated display came out! Looks so pretty :) I love your idea about putting color behind the medal holder, I may borrow that one :) I received my first medal holder for Christmas, but still haven't figured out where to put it. I only have a handful of medals, but I will use your stagger idea also! Maybe by summer I will have it hung somewhere lol

  3. Look at all those medals!! I still have yet to hang my medal holder and medals. I need to get on that! It's just so hard to try to find a space where it would look appropriate.

    1. Yes, since it was against white wall paper I needed some pop of color. I'm pretty pleased how it turned out!

  6. I love how your medal rack came out! I don't display my medals (they're in a drawer), but my medical assistant made a memory box of my Chicago marathon for me. That is on display on my bookcase.

  7. OMG, yes, I have put in so much thought into my race wall(s). I finally got all my frames and pictures, so I will be hanging everything this weekend. I keep thinking I'll have a Disney side and an everything else side, but it's kinda blended together. I'll send you pics when I have it all up.

P.S. I do love the colored paper behind the medal displays. May have to steal that one. :)

  8. I actually saw your first post a while ago. It motivated me to make something for our medals. It's only in the beginning stages but I love it already.

  9. I love this! What a cool project. I don't have too many medals yet (only four haha) so they're hanging from a bulletin board in my room. I hope one day I have a collection like yours so I can work on a similar project myself :)

  10. Wow, this looks awesome! I still remember your first post which motivated me to get my medals out from the box at the bottom of my closet, but I still don't have them hanging, I really need to get on that!!

  11. They are so well deserved & earned that they NEED that much thought put into the showing of them :)
I have mine on hangers I have around my room & try to keep my hangers specifically for certain ones/races... I actually need more hangers for my 5k medals.
    Love your beautiful medals!!!

  13. I love that you take so much care in displaying your medals. It inspires me to a.) earn more medals then b.) display them nicely! I have 4 medals...maybe 5. They are just hanging from my bedroom mirror. I think once I earn a few more I'll want to do a nice display.

  14. Brilliant idea with the colored paper!!! It really makes your medal displays pop - love it. I am into showing off my medals and race pictures as well. I have them in my home office, and while my kids started off calling it "braggy" the last time they were home (Christmas), each of them mentioned how impressed they were with my medals, so there, haha!

  16. Your shrine looks fabulous! I haven't touched mine since we put it up in our office back in the fall, but I can't wait for race season to start again and to print some more race pictures to add to it.

  17. My boyfriend gave me a medal hanger for Christmas (not the most recent Christmas) and we never got around to hanging it. Now that we're selling the house it will have to wait until after we move!

  18. Love the color idea behind the words, very creative!!!! I have 1 medal hanger, and I might just steal your idea!
I do display my marathon finisher medals they already take up too much space (in a good way), but all others are in scrapbooks or boxes to be scrapbooked, LOL Definitely not as creative as I could be with them all (yet). One day I'd like to take an entire hall in my home and cut into the wall and build a large display case, full with lights and everything:) I've already designed it, I just need my own home where I can legally take a saw to the wall and start the project, LOL
