Weekly Wrap ...It's October!

Welcome to October! I think all things Fall have arrived! Is this not the largest mum you've ever seen? To put it in perspective, Baylee is an 80 lb lab sitting next to it and it is still huge!

Unfortunately the mum now looks like this because of all the rain we got this weekend!

And speaking of fall.....
Pumpkin spice frappe from Starbucks
I had my first Pumpkin Spice Frappe and Pumpkin soup of the season! The Frappe was only okay. If I didn't already know that it was Pumpkin Spice, I probably wouldn't have been able to tell by tasting it. I could taste a little bit of nutmeg but that was it.  The pumpkin soup on the other hand was AMAZING!  ( I got that at a local restaurant ).

As far as the gym goes, I've continued to be consistent with showing up on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays!  You know that those are also my running days as well.  However,  I needed to take Monday off this week from running because I just get too worn down from the weekend and need an extra day of rest. Wednesday was a non running day as well because I had the opportunity to spend some time with family instead. So my only hope was to get a run in on Friday and hopefully a long one on Saturday.

So on Thursday night I had an accident with the dog gate and it fell down and hit me in the back of the calf. It hurt and it started bruising up immediately.  Now I was worried about if I was even going to get my run in on Friday.  On Friday afternoon at work I finally had some time to prop it up and ice it for a while.

Friday was the start of our less than perfect weather. It pretty much rained all day long. My running friend Heather was coming to visit and I worried how the weather would affect our plans.  Before she arrived I had time to get in my last gym session for the week.

By the time I came out of the gym it had stopped raining and it was rather warm. I decided to slip on my visor (in case it started to sprinkle) and see if I could run with this big bruise on my calf.  Turns out I got three pretty fast miles in through town and the pain in my calf did not bother me at all while I ran.

On Saturday I planned to do a long run with my friend Heather on the Rail Trail. Thank you all for your advice on my post on Friday on how I should be ramping up my mileage. I did have that conversation with my PT and he did say that I should be getting in 2 weekend of 13 mile runs before race day!  This surprised me as I thought he would want me to be more conservative seeing as I am injury prone.  He made a plan for me and I think I should be able to stick too it.

Because there was rain in the forecast pretty much all day, we knew that this long run was going to be a challenge.  The sky was clear till we got to the trail and then as soon as we got out of the car, BAM! it poured. We got back in the car and waited about 5 minutes. It stopped. We then found our little window of opportunity.
Thumbs up for a rain free run!
God must have felt sorry for us so gave us some great weather for our entire run. Heather had 12 miles on her plan and I was only going to do 10 of those miles with her because I didn't want to push too much.  Since The weather was perfect, and we were doing a run/walk, I decided to go ahead and do those extra 2 miles with her. I was having way too much fun to stop!

We completed 12 happy miles and as soon as we got back to the car, it started to pour again. We couldn't have planned it any better than this!

We still have some adventures to get to today so hopefully the weather will hold out just a bit longer! -M

We are linking up with the lovely Holly and Tricia for their weekly wrap!

  1. Holy moly that is a big mum AND a big bruise!!! I bruise all the time and I never know where they come from! I'm glad you got 12 miles in yesterday. :) It was such a dreary 4 days here... still dreary now... Good job continuing to be consistent at the gym. I am trying to convince myself to go today but my whole body is a little sore from the race yesterday! I think I carried some stress in my back and shoulders.

  2. It's been so gross and rainy here. I am glad you were able to get your run in! And I am glad the bruise didnt bother you...I always worry when I do something that causes a bruise that I will feel it when I am running!

    1. I am surprised that it hurt way more just standing than it did while running. It is still very tender to the touch though.

  3. I have never seen such a big mum - wow!

So happy that you had two great runs, and getting in that 12 miler with a friend is fantastic. :)

    1. Yea, this is the largest one we've had. I think we will break it apart and replant it in the spring.

  4. I think you were definitely getting a good message from the universe when you were able to get your run in despite the rainy weather. Having a running buddy sure makes the miles that much better and more fun. For some reason, when I have someone with me, the miles don't seem nearly as long! You take care of that bruise - looks like a nasty one!

  6. Mums in the south have a different meaning, and they're huge. Glad your bruise let you run and that you got 12 miles in. I hope you feel better about that race now that you had a good long run.

  7. We've had just really crappy weather this week. It has rained every day. They keep saying it's going away but it hasn't yet!

I hope your bruise heals up quickly! That mum is huge!

  9. Your mum looks a lot like all of the sedum in my yard. They look beautiful with their deep red/burgundy blooms, but all of them are split "open" like that (and we have not had any rain). I think they have just gotten too big and need dividing...yes, maybe in my free time. Glad your 10-miler went well!

    1. Oh, so perhaps it was just so big and split by its self? I had not thought of that and just assumed it was the rain. We had thought about splitting it and replanting it in the spring.

  10. I'm addicted to the Autumn Squash soup at Panera. It also has pumpkin in it. That is a nasty looking bruise. I'm glad to hear it didn't bother you to run. When we moved into our house, a mum had literally taken over a large portion of the back yard. It was the size of a kiddie pool! I never knew they could get that big. We left it there several years. Great job on that 12 miler. Thanks for linking, Meranda!

  13. Your mum is amazing, I have one that got all huge like that too.. and it is raining right now, I wonder if mine will look like yours. So pretty aren't they? Last year was the first time I have planted them and I love how well and easy they are to grow. of course you have to wait all summer for them to bloom, so worth the wait!
I have never tried pumpkin or squash soup, but I do have a big squash sitting on my counter...hmmm.
Great job on the 12 miler!

  17. How nice to meet up with a running friend -- but I gotta say, 2 13 mile runs before a half? That seems like crazy talk to me. I never even run 13 before a half, but everyone is different! Hope it works for you.

That bruise looks awful; glad it didn't effect your run.

  26. Woo hoo, way to nail the 12-miler when you planned to only do 10 because you felt so good! That is such a wonderful experience!!! I am sorry to hear about the bruise but glad that it isn't hampering your training. I wish you the speediest of recoveries!!! Pumpkin soup.... yummmmmm.......

  27. Great job on the run!
Sorry about the big bruise! I've had some nasty ones like that before, the part I hate about them is they take forever to fade away. I got one on my shin when I moved a month and a half ago and it's still faintly there, because I had wacked it so hard originally... Yours might heal a bit faster since it's on your calf:) Hopefully!
    That mum is huge!
Hope you do get to keep some nice weather for a bit longer!!!

  28. Congrats on getting that long run in and 'going the extra mile' for 2 more! I've never tried pumpkin soup...is it served hot or cold? I'm intrigued. As to that gigantic mum...where in the world did you get that? Has it been planted in the ground and just getting bigger each year? Was it able to 'stand back up' after the rain or permanently damaged? Inquiring minds want to know :)

  29. Rain, rain, go away!!! It's a rainy week here, too! Great work on your run and that bruise looks pretty rough! I'm glad you ate able to run through it though 😀 Keep up the strong training!
