7 Things That Will Be Helpful to Pack for a Disney Race

It's that time again! We are starting to pack for our trip to Disney. I know you are surprised that we hadn't already started packing last month!!!! We put a post out last year before Princess Half marathon about what we were and weren't packing  and it proved to be quite helpful to some folks.

This is a little addition to that post. We want to mention a few things that you wouldn't normally think about packing when you go to Disney but we have found these things to be quite useful.

1.First off, get your self lots of Ziplock bags of various sizes.  You will want to pack some empty ones so you can put ice in them when you need to ice your legs back at the hotel.

2.We will also be packing Ziplock bags full of Epsom salt. I will be packing 2 bags with 2 cups of Epsom salt in each bag. This way I will use one full bag in a bath after each race.

3.If you are like me and you have tightness or pain, don't forget your arsenal of massage devices.  I know there has been some controversy last year over whether or not the "stick" is allowed in a carry on, and it indeed is. You may want to pick up a travel foam roller too.
I found this massage capsule at Wal-Mart last weekend. It has gel in it because it is meant to go in the freezer. Not sure if this is something that will be able to be carried on or if I will have to give it to my sister to pack.

4.In another Ziplock bag I will pack all my cords for my electronic devices. Runners have a lot of electronics. I'll have a charger for my camera, my phone, my Garmin, ( another Garmin I will be borrowing), and my ipad.  I always hate looking through my luggage on the day of check out to make sure I have all of my chargers. This way I pack them right in a clear gallon size Ziplock and I know where they all are.

5.Speaking of cords, we have got in the habit of packing an extra power strip. Take all those electronic devices and then times that by two people. That's a lot of stuff to plug in. Hotels are limited in outlets, the power strip comes in handy!

6.I also keep all our travel documents , race waivers, and other important papers in a Ziplock bag so they are all in one place too. Marathon weekend in 2013 we printed all of our waivers a head of time and then once we got on the shuttle bus to go to the expo we realized we left them back in the room. Hopefully that wont happen this time.

7. Last year for Tower of Terror I brought a small trash bag with me ( just one of the white kitchen ones, not a huge Hefty one). I was able to fold this up small enough that it fit in the pocket of my running skirt. I pulled it out once we got to the staging area and it was big enough for me and my friend to sit on until they left us go into our corrals. It was much better than sitting on the concrete. I'll be bringing trash bags with me again!

I'm a carry on gal so I try to stay organized. Hopefully these few tips will help you out!

I try not to pack unnecessary stuff so if you'd like to see what things I'm leaving behind, feel free to read THIS.

What item do you pack for a race that others might not think about?

  1. I also read that the stick is allowed as a carry on, but I got a really hard time about it when I carried it on 2 years ago. Eventually they let me bring it but it was kind of annoying to be questioned so much!

    1. Yea, I don't even really understand why the stick was even a questionable item. I always carry that on!

  3. Great tips! I always carry a lot of zip loc bags when I travel too since they're useful for so many things. And that trash bag was perfect for ToT :) I have to remember it for all future racecations. I'm going to check out your other packing posts now.

  5. I am a huge fan of the garbage bag to keep warm in before a race, perfect and cheap:) I do like your ziplock ideas, I never thought about using them also for storage things like papers. My last trip my luggage was left on the terminal while it rained and everything soaked, ruined a book. I will have to remember the Ziploc idea for the future thats a good one!!!

  8. These are all great tips! I have only really traveled to one race, most of the races I do are within a few miles from my house, but plastic bags are a must for trail races and "adventure races" because you get SO dirty!

  17. Great tips! Ziplock bags are so handy. Trash bags are great for keeping you warm prior to start as well.
I would be worried about ziplock baggies of epsom salts in my luggage though, airport security might think it's something else! ha ha

  18. I brought Epsom salt with me to one of the WDW races and I couldn't get through security with it. That was a couple of years ago, so maybe it won't be a problem now.
