Ditch the Treadmill for 5 other pieces of inexpensive workout equipment

The Friday 5 this week is all about Indoor Fitness. Since both of us are having problems with our legs, we've been doing lots of indoor activities lately.

When you don't feel like running outdoors ( or it's a little too cold or snowy), you automatically think of the dreaded treadmill. We both  have been physically unable to run for a while so the treadmill has not been an option for us lately.  We have found that we can still get in a good work out with these other simple pieces of equipment.

1. Fitness Ball: This is probably one of our favorite pieces of equipment to use but it can be dangerous if you don't use it properly. Balance is key. You can use it in a multitude of ways. Sit on it to do sit ups, strengthen you legs by using it for bridges, and lots of core and ab exercises. Since these moves are difficult to explain, we've linked to a page on Helpful ways to use the fitness ball for beginners.

2. The Xfinity Bands: The Xfinity bands take the plain old fitness band to a whole new level. I would suggest using them with a video first to learn some moves, and then you can do a few stretches and strengthening moves on your own whenever the mood strikes.
My sister actually did a post on the Xfinity band HERE, if you would like to learn more about it.

3. Another inexpensive item that is very is a therapy resistance band.  We got some from Physical therapy and my sister has been faithful in using hers. We actually looked up the actually name of these bands and it is Physical Therapy band, go figure. You can purchase them at Walmart, Target, or any sports retailer.  These are not the "tube bands".  They are like really thick rubber bands and they are great for strengthening up leg muscles. Our favorite move is putting them around your knees before doing clamshells or putting them around your ankles and doing lunges.

4. Don't forget about the plain old jump rope. Nothing fancy about this one. A jump rope is great cardio.

5.  Ankle weights are a joy. You can strap those on and do almost any activity. Here is an example of how you can build strength in your upper legs and help a tight IT band or Hamstring.

Seated IT band/Hamstring stretch: You can't tell in this picture but she has 3 pound weights strapped to her ankles ( You can use which ever weight feels right to you). You'll want to sit on a hard surfaced chair. Put a pillow under the leg you will be stretching. Arch your back as you grip the underneath part of the chair ( this is very important in feeling the resistance as you stretch). Lift the leg up until your knee is straight and then for a bit more stretch, flex your toes up. Do this 10X with each leg. Don't forget to move the pillow under the leg you are stretching.

I do a lot of these exercises in the evenings while I am watching my shows.  I would normally want to reach for the snacks but instead, I'll do a set a bodyweight exercises during the commercial breaks. I do a set of squats, lunges, crunches, and push ups. By the time I am finished, the commercials are over and my show is back on. It really does pass the time. And who can complain of a few more calories burned?

What are some ways you workout inside ( without the treadmill)?   -L

Happily Ever After Party

This post is for anyone who is participating in Disney's Princess Half Marathon Weekend in February. Year after year as thousands of women prepare for this race weekend, we see many Facebook posts asking what exactly the Happily Ever After Party is.  Well, if you were wondering that too, this post is for you.

The Happily Ever After party is held at Downtown Disney on Sunday night after the half marathon. It's not so much of a party as it is a public celebration. It is business as usual at Downtown Disney and there is not a special section just for runners or anything like that.

Of course things could change from year to year but this is what it has been like the last several years.

There are congratulatory signs and banners up near the west side.

One year they had a background set up for pictures ( your own pictures of course, no photographer was there, no characters either).

There was a kiosk of left over race merchandise. (This was very limited though).

In the runners guide that you will be getting there will be some coupons and special offers for the shops and restaurants at downtown. Some will give you a percentage off of an item
when you show your medal or bib. Some even offer a free item to the first hundred runners ( or some other random number).  For example a store "Little Miss Matched" was giving out free socks last year to a select amount of runners. My sister and I didn't go to downtown till later in the evening so we didn't get any freebies but as my sister would say "That's okay, we like our socks to match anyway",..lol.

One year when we were there we saw a special section set up outdoors ( back in a corner out of the way) where there was a dinner being hosted. We were casually talking to someone who was there monitoring the event and they told us it was for the winners. I suppose that will be an event that we will never been invited to! I thought maybe age group award recipients were invited to that to get their awards but it seems as if those awards are mailed.

So as you can see, the Happily Ever After party isn't much of a party ( unless you are the winner). If you miss it, you really don't miss anything.

Have you been to the Happily Ever After Party at Downtown Disney? If so, did you see anything special?

What You Can Earn From FitStudio

I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Sears. I will receive a promotional item to thank me for participating.

When I heard about the FitStudio campaign for Sears, I knew I wanted to participate. Sears is an exclusive retailer for Nordic Track fitness equipment and since I love my Nordic Track Treadmill and my Nordic Track Bike, I thought this would be a good fit for me.

First off, what is FitStudio? FitStudio is a one stop resource for fitness online. It offers product reviews on equipment and gear, daily workouts, challenges that you can participate in, promotions, and REWARDS.  That's right, you actually earn rewards ( like cash) for working out. The best part is that it is FREE!

Here is how it works.

1. You'll need to sign up ( for free) here www.fitstudio.com
You'll earn 2000 points for signing up.
You'll earn 2000 points for completing your profile.
You'll earn 1000 points for connecting a device like a fitbit,  Up by Jawbone, MyFitnessPal, MapMyFitness, RunKeeper, and several other devices.

2. Get Active.
    Fitness Activities
Earn 100 points when you walk or run 2 miles per day.
Earn 100 points when you burn 100 active calories.

      Social Activity
Earn 100 points when you share FitStudio content.
Earn 100 points when you share your progress.

Plus for 2015 you can participate in the #Achieve15 where you can earn 5000 points for walking or running 15 miles OR burning 1500 calories!  ( This will earn you $5.00 in your Shop Your Way points)

3. Redeem Your Points.

You can redeem your points at Sears or Kmart. I just started with this program and already I have earned $9.00.

It's that simple!

But wait there is SO much more that can be done with FitStudio. Each user has a Dashboard filled with a plethora of fitness activities and tips.  Do you want to challenge yourself a bit more? FitStudio allows you to participate in challenges each month. I looked up some of the past challenges and it looked like they had a Turkey Trot and a Frosty Fitness Challenge.  Shown is the current challenge for January.

You can of course customize your own workouts too, find articles on fitness and nutrition, and look up gear reviews. Oh I could spend so much time on theses gear reviews. I got a new Nordic Track bike for Christmas so I of course had to pull that model number up to see what they said about it. (Spoiler alert, they love it).  Every review includes a video testimonial, an overall score, and "cool tips callouts", which highlight unique features of that particular piece of equipment. Check out the reviews HERE.

FitStudio also has a Personalized DEAL OF THE DAY feature. Members can select the type of gear or equipment they are shopping for and Deal of the Day for that item will be loaded into their Shop My Way Account ( also on FitStudio). What is nice about this is that you can use the points that you earn for working out towards your Deal of the Day item.

Would you participate in a program like FitStudio? Have you ever earned rewards for your daily workouts?

What do you mean, a worse race?

Every race that we do, we always want to improve, right?  When I found out the topic for this week's Tuesdays on the Run was what was your worst race and what did you learn from it, I had to think quite a bit about this one, because honestly I don't think I  had a worst race. How do you define a worst race? Is it not PRing? Is it not feeling well during the race?  Or maybe fighting an injury throughout it?
I decided that my worst race actually ending up being my favorite race. Let me explain.  Last year you may have recalled that my sister was going to run the Big Sur Marathon with me for her first marathon. Due to the injuries she encountered during her training she was unable to do it. I told her since she was unable to do that race, I would run the Disney World Marathon with her the next year as her first. It was my first a few years ago, and I believe it is a perfect first marathon to run. Since I had run the marathon in the past I told her that I would like to challenge myself and run the Goofy Challenge.  I would run the half for myself then make sure I would be at the starting line with her during the marathon. A few days later she said to me "well if you are running the half I should too." Well surely I couldn't let her run it by herself. And plus she loves putting outfits together so we would have to run together in order for great pictures, right? Well there goes my chance of PRing in any of the races.

Running Costume Decisions

As with any Run Disney weekend, I am usually the one that is in charge of putting together our race day outfits. Since we are having a snow day today I thought today would be a good day to work on putting some more outfits together.

Our mom will be running all 3 of the princess weekend races with us at Disney next month, so not only do I have to think up and put outfits together for Lacey and I, but I also want our mom to coordinate with us. A lot of our costume pieces this year will be recycled pieces from years past. Here is just a peek of what I already put together this weekend.

I am working on this Belle costume but to be honest it may be too "poofy" for any one of us to run in. It needs a few more touches to it too.

You will for sure be seeing us in these "Minnie" inspired outfits on the course.  For which race, I'm not quite sure yet. We still have to coordinate some other outfits with each other.

When you run with a group, do you try to coordinate race outfits?   -M

Things Sore Runners Try

Happy Friday Folks!
The theme for this Friday 5, hosted by Courtney, Mar, and Cynthia, is "about us".
Well the thing about us lately is that we've both been hurting. No, it's not because we just finished the Goofy challenge which was 39.3 miles of pure magic..haha. We both have been hurting since RnR Vegas in November. I've had the whole knee tendonitis and IT band thing going on and Lacey has had a pain on the outside of her knee that's been slowing her down a bit.

Here are some common things we've tried and our take on it. Let us know what you think of these products.

1. KT Tape: I have read so many blogs where the runner has said KT tape saved their running career or they could not have gotten  through a race with out it. I had high hopes for this tape. Unfortunately this has not worked for me. I will admit that my pain may be more serious than what Kinesiology tape can fix. I have the opportunity to try out Rock tape but I have a feeling that will be no different.

2. Tiger Balm: This is an old remedy that has been introduced to us. My mom has used it on some sore spots and says it works like a charm. I will admit that it does sooth my pain for a bit.

3. Marathon Cream: My sister picked this up at the RnR Las Vegas Expo.  It is kind of like Bio freeze in that it gives you that tingling feeling but it smells better! Now of course it doesn't fix the problem, She is still having trouble with her knee but it definitely helps out alot during her run when she puts it on beforehand. She has it laying right next to her treadmill so she doesn't forget to apply it before she runs. Not only does it help runners, it can be used for all types of pain and arthritis. I think for the price it is very economical as well. A 4oz bottle is only $20. I do not think this is sold at any retail stores yet, but if you are interested in trying it go to
Http://www.marathonpainrelief.com and check out the testimonies.
4. Knee Straps: I picked up a knee strap before the WDW Marathon weekend. It said that it was for people who had knee tendonitis so I decided to give it a try. I did a trial run on the treadmill ( of only one mile) a few days before I left for Florida.  hen I put it below my knee it just slipped off. I put it above my knee like I've seen other runners do and that sort of put pressure on the muscle ( in a good way) to prevent in from hurting. I got through the mile with no pain and thought I had a winner. Unfortunately the strap didn't do anything for me on race day.
5. And  when we are not running, we have been stretching and icing and of course foam rolling and using the massage stick and all sorts of other massage tools we have. We've also been taking lots of Epsom salt baths too ( which prove to be more for relaxation then anything else).
Lacey is going to continue to nurse her knee and rest and ice until Princess  weekend and see how it goes. I will be returning to the Orthopedist for another consult.  Other runners have suggested ART therapy for me, which I tried to have done at my Chiro last year but he wouldn't perform it because he said it would hurt too much. And just recently someone mentioned Dry Needling to me which I believe is some sort of acupuncture from the little that I've researched.
Would you try dry needling? What things do you use when you have pain in your legs/knees?

The Merchandise ( and how I changed it)

Hello readers! We love looking at official race merchandise, even if it's not from a race that we are even running. Last spring we were loving all the official merchandise from the Nike Women's half marathon in D.C that our friends were posting online.  For that reason we thought we would share with you some of the official race merchandise from the Disney Marathon Weekend. We'll show you what we liked and what we weren't that fond of.

Why you should pack gloves for your next race even if it's warm.

Over the years we have done multiple race challenges and have earned multiple medals in one weekend. Of course after the last race it is customary to want to wear your medals around and if you are at Disney, it's almost mandatory that you do so! ( just kidding but why would you NOT want to wear your medal(s).  Even if they have ran multiple race and have earned multiple medals, some runners choose to wear just one medal to the park because wearing all of them is just too heavy.  Even if you choose to only wear one medal to the park, you may want to bring the collection of other medals you have earned to the park with you for a few photographs.  So, if you do that, here is where packing the gloves comes involved........

Later on Sunday evening when all the races were completed, we wanted to get a few pictures with our medals when we went out for dinner. We only wore the Goofy Challenge medal but we packed the other medals in our bag and brought them with us.  Before we threw our medals in the bag, we put them inside our stretchy gloves.
The medals actually did fit all the way inside these stretchy gloves and they were protected quite nicely. I left some of the medal hanging out just for the sake of the picture.

This prevented the medals from banging up against one another as we toted the bag around.  We also put the medals inside the gloves when we placed them in our carry on luggage before we boarded our flight home.

This worked our perfectly and a little tip we will remember when we participated in other multi- race weekends.  We'll even be packing some stretchy gloves when we run the multi race weekends in VA beach even though it will probably be 98 degrees!

I suppose you could do the same thing by putting the medals inside your socks, but I don't like to stretch my socks out and these stretchy gloves work perfect!

Do you pack your medals with care when you travel home?  Do you take ALL your medals to the parks with you?

Own It

I'm getting this post off to a late start today and to be honest, I wasn't even going to write anything today until I read a great post from my friend Rebecca Jo who blogs at Press on and Run. She inspired me as she talked about running her first 5K of the year. You should go ahead and read her blog.

One thing I love about Disney races and Rock n Roll races are the fun finisher certificates that you can print out after the race. Each year they seem to be a different design. I have started to hang them up on my race wall in my dressing room. I haven't taken an updated picture of my race wall for a while, but you can see the last picture I posted HERE.   Anyway, I have been stalking the Run Disney results page since after marathon weekend waiting for the finisher certificates to become available. Yesterday I finally saw that they were. I promptly printed all three of mine out ( Half Marathon, Marathon, and Goofy Challenge) and framed them.

As I was putting the half marathon certificate in the frame I thought "Do I really want to hang this one up?"  After all, it was my slowest half marathon finish time to date. Was I really proud of that? Did I really want to display that?   My final answer was YES.  I know this sounds funny, but even though this was my slowest half, it is the one I am most proud of.  I am even more proud of this one than I am of the half marathon I ran in Las Vegas where I actually PR-ed  by 20 minutes!  I am proud of this Disney half because I can't believe the strength that it took me to get through it. I am proud of this half because I did it as part of the Goofy Challenge ( which was running a marathon the next day, so of course I wouldn't be expecting a PR even if I wasn't injured).  Also I am proud of this half because even though it is my slowest to date, it was still only 2 minutes slower than my last slowest. I am proud of my time considering how much pain I was in.

So I guess what I am saying here is be proud of each race you run. Not every race is going to be a PR and some races might not be good ones. But take those "not so good" races and remember what it was that got you through it and be proud of that.  These are my races and I'm owning them. I own my time. I own these certificates and will hanging them on my wall with pride!   -M

Have you struggled with a race that ended being one that you were most proud of?

Meeting Bloggers and Runnners

The Saturday that we were at Disney, we hosted a meet up. This was a chance for us to meet a lot of our blogging and running friends who we have shared stories and encouragement with over the past few years. Some we have met before and others who we have just met felt like old friends.

We want to thank everyone that took time out of their busy day to come meet with us. Almost everyone here had just ran the half marathon a few hours before so I know resting was probably high on their priority list (or having some park time).  We want to give a special "Thanks" to Mary Beth from Tutus and Tennies because she was not running this weekend but since she is a "local" took the time to drive over to Disney just to meet with this lovely group of runners and bloggers. Isn't that sweet?

Since Disney transportation isn't the most reliable, we ended up having two groups of people come at different times.
Our blogging friends: Juliana from 4WellRules, Lacey, Amy from Rock City Skirts, Meranda, Mary Beth from Tutus and Tennies, Lois, Author of the Running to Disney Facebook page, Gabby from The Running Goober, Walt and Monica (Disney Groom and Disney Bride) from Running Happily Ever After, Lauren and her husband Robert from Lauren's Glass Slipper, and Denise from Healthy Disney Family.

In this group we are all Rockin the Skirts from Rock City Skirts. Everyone was able to pick out a skirt to keep! I know a few runners who even wore their skirt for the marathon the next day!

These are our tall friends....just kidding.  We know them from the Running to Disney Facebook group. Jeanne, Cori, Lisa, Lacey, Lois, Meranda, and Peg.

Lara bar supplied us with a TON of  snacks for the occasion. We had so much that everyone at the meet up got to fill their bag and then we made them take bags for their families and friends. We had so much left over that we left some for the "mousekeeping" staff at the Contemporary and even handed them out while we were waiting for the Magical Express!

We had some generous sponsors who gave some door prizes to be given out as well: Shirts, hats, magnets, books, supplements, water bottles, running fuel, lock laces, etc.  Remember that fancy Running Journal from Gone For A Run that we reviewed earlier this month? Well Gone For a Run gave us an extra one as a giveaway for this meet up. That was won by Disney Groom!  We are sure he'll have that filled up in no time!

In a few weeks we will be packing our bags and heading to Disney again for the Princess Half Marathon weekend. Unfortunately we will not be hosting a meet up like this one. We are both running 3 races and need all of our luggage space this time. There will be no room for snacks and giveaways!  However, if anyone wants initiate a meet up, please let us know!

A Peek in our Week and some teeth tips

First off I would like to give a HUGE "THANK YOU" to everyone that left congratulatory words on our blog and Facebook page after the Marathon.  I can't believe I am a MARATHONER! I also have to thank all of you who left encouraging words during the brutal training.  Although I am excited that Marathon training is over, I am actually looking forward to running another one. But for now I really need to concentrate on recovery and find out what is going on with my knees.

Scenes from the Disney World Marathon

After the previous day's half marathon, I was pretty bummed out. Not because of my performance, but because of the pain that came back and what that might mean for the Marathon. I knew that I was going to get through this race, but I didn't train all that time to "just get through it".  Even if I was in pain, there was no way I was going to walk this marathon. That is not what I came to do!

Walt Disney World Half Marathon

I knew that I wanted to eventually complete all the Disney races at Disney World, so when the chance to run the Goofy Challenge came up, I decided I could kill two birds with one stone so to speak. Even though the Marathon was my main race, I thought "Why not throw in the Donald Half Marathon since I want to do it eventually, and if I do it now, I'll get the cool Goofy Challenge medal".

As you may have already heard on social media, the weather for the first couple of races was anything but "Florida" like. It was cold.  Remember those 13.1 tank tops that I redesigned 3 times? Well, sadly they didn't even see the light of day. We ended up wearing the long sleeve race shirt over top of our tanks and I even kept my throw away shirt the entire time. I hate being cold so I even wore my compression pants under my skirt.

Blogger Cook off event at Run Disney

During Disney Marathon weekend we were invited to a blogger cook-off event. The event was held on Friday afternoon up at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex. This was so much fun because we not only got to reunite with some running bloggers that we had met before but we also got to finally meet some running bloggers that we have been communicating with over social media for sometime now.

The event was hosted by Cigna ( who is the sponsor of the marathon weekend).  They organized it almost as if we were on the set of "Iron Chef" or "Chopped".  We were all split in to several groups. I believe there were 5 or so groups and then a Vegan group. We each had a different "Special" ingredient that we had to use in our main dish.

Then there was a vegetable table, a spice table, and a carb section. We also had a big fridge we could get in to find stuff like cheese and milk. Our "Special" ingredient was Chicken. I don't recall exactly how many pounds of chicken they made our group cut up and cook but it was A LOT. We were suppose to make a dish that would serve 40 people but I'm sure we had much more.

Each group had a "Master Chef" from Disney to help them with their dish. The dish we decided to make was a Chicken Alfredo with sauté vegetables. With a little help from Disney's Chef Jarrod, we even made the Alfredo sauce from scratch.

When all the meals were complete, they were put in a buffet line for all of us to try each others creations. The Chef's also had made us salads, side dishes, and yummy desserts. We thought our Chicken Alfredo was yummy, but golly, ALL the groups made a yummy dish. I don't remember all of them but there was a grilled shrimp dish that really stood out in my mind because it was so fabulous! Kudos to the group who made that!

This was our fabulous cooking group.
Denise from Healthy Disney Family, Erin from For the Love of Disney Running, Lacey, Meranda, and Fred from Nola Runner.

We had such a fun time that we should have done something more to thank Cigna for inviting us to this great event, but instead, they thanked us all for coming with an extremely generous goodie bag! We didn't completely look into our bag until we got back to our resort and we were absolutely flabbergasted to find that we were given a $50 Disney gift card! Thank you Cigna!

Did you attend Marathon weekend at Disney?

Spirit of My Marathon

In the spring of 2013 my mom and I went to the theater to see "Spirit of the Marathon 2". That was a story about a group of runners who were preparing for the Rome Marathon. Although it did not convince me that I ever wanted to run a marathon, I left the theater feeling that it was a very inspiring movie and was enjoyable.

For christmas in 2013, I received "Spirit of the Marathon" ( the first movie) as a gift. I was planning on watching it before my first Marathon in Big Sur. Well, that marathon never happened so I never watched the movie. However, the night before we left for the disney marathon weekend was a perfect time to open up the movie and watch it.

The first movie follows a group of runners who are preparing for the Chicago marathon. Some were first
time marathoners and some were chasing a PR.  i didn't find this first movie to be inspiring as i prepared for my own first marathon. in fact it kind of made me nervous and i was actually second guessing my decision to do the goofy challenge.

what pumps you up before a big race?    -m

Friday 5

Greetings folks! We are blogging on the run today, literally. As you know we are at Disney this weekend and since the theme of the Friday 5 is "Favorite City" we of course thought we would write about Orlando, specifically Disney.

We are going to mention 5 not so popular Disney attractions that we love.

1. Where's the Fire. This attraction has been a favorite of ours for years. It is basically a large playhouse that you run around trying to find fire hazardous! So much fun for kids and adults. It is located in the Innovations Building in Epcot.

2. Visa Character meet and greet. If you aren't a Disney visa card member, you should be. One of the perks of having the Disney visa is being able to go to the special character meet and greet. You will get a free 5x7 photo of you and the characters. This is also located in the innovations building in Epcot.

3. O Canada 360 circle vision. Most people tend to skip the attractions that are movies, but this one is a good one. It is a 360 movie screen that shows the landscapes of Canada. So beautiful! This is located
in the Canada pavilion in Epcot.

4.Biergarten. This is a restaurant in the Germany pavilion at Epcot and if you time your dining just right you will get a dinner show!

5. Pick a Pearl. A must do during every visit is to stop by the Japan pavilion in Epcot. We choose an oyster she'll from out of the tank and always find a beautiful pearl inside. We have quite a collection.

What is your favorite "less popular" attraction at
disney?

We are linking up with the gals from the DC trifecta.

Disney race day outfits

Good Morning! We thought we would share with you our race day outfits today. The first race that we will be participating in will be the half marathon. We kind of went for a "numbers" theme here.

A peek at the princess medals for 2015

In addition to running marathon weekend we will also be running princess weekend. There has been some debated over what the medals will look like for 2015 since the theme is supposedly "Frozen". Take a look.

Sorry the 5K medals were not available at this time.

Thank you to @Heatherlas for the use of her photos.

What do you know about Tendonitis?

As you may know I have been having pain on and off for about a year now. Actually, thanks to this little blog I have been able to look back through the archives and determine exactly when the pain started and what the symptoms were. So for that reason alone, I am glad to have documented my pain! Not only do I want to continue to document my condition but I am also putting it out there in case this information helps anyone else. Also, if you've been in a similar situation, I'd love to hear how you handled it. The first onset of pain actually started last January at this time. Since then I have seen a chiropractor, a physical therapist, a general practitioner, a physicians assistant, and an orthopedic surgeon.

The Chiro and PT both suggested a set of exercises.

The General Practitioner said I had bursitis in the hips and gave me cortisone shots. This actually gave me the most relief but he also suggested I made an appointment with the Ortho.

I couldn't get into Ortho until 2 months later. When I finally did, he took an MRI of my pelvis to make sure something was not misaligned which would be causing me to have pain in my leg.
The end result was that he found nothing and so he went ahead and gave me more cortisone shots.

The Cortisone seemed to being doing the trick so before Rock n Roll VA Beach, I went back to the general practitioner but saw his P.A.  She gave me the shots but also diagnosed me with Greater Trochanter Syndrome.  The cure was to continue doing the stretches I was already doing.

After Rock n Roll Vegas in November I started feeling the pain again. Not to the extent that I had been feeling it earlier in the year but it was enough to stop me from running for more than a few minutes without taking a walk break. I wanted to cure this right away because I knew the marathon would be coming up.  On New Years eve I saw the PA again and after finally convincing her to give me the shot she recommended that I get an MRI done. I had that MRI yesterday and the result came back that it is Tendonitis of the knee. When I researched tendonitis of the knee I didn't think it sounded at all like the pain I am experiencing but I did find that there are several types of knee tendonitis and the PA said mine was lateral. My pain is on the outside of my knee and behind the knee. When I run it feels like I have pinching in this area. She also said I had a ganglion cyst which is from over use.  Every time I ask the PA about treatment she always tells me it is from over use and has no other suggestions on what I can do for pain relief. I had asked her about straps or bands and again was told they would not help.

Before I found out it was tendonitis I had gone to the pharmacy and bought this knee strap. I was hoping to find an IT band strap but this is the only one they had. Funnily enough, it is for knee tendonitis. It is meant to be worn under the knee cap but I tried it there and it just fell off. I have seen runners wearing the IT band strap above their knee so I tried it there too. It ended up that it actually stopped some of my pain. I ended up being able to do a short run just to test it out and it was okay.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can make it through marathon weekend. Maybe the folks at the KT tape booth will have some suggestions for me!

Have you ever had lateral tendonitis in your knee?

Remembering the Disney World Marathon

To get in marathon mood we thought today would be a good day to share our recap from the 20th anniversary Walt Disney World Marathon.

7 Things That Will Be Helpful to Pack for a Disney Race

It's that time again! We are starting to pack for our trip to Disney. I know you are surprised that we hadn't already started packing last month!!!! We put a post out last year before Princess Half marathon about what we were and weren't packing  and it proved to be quite helpful to some folks.

This is a little addition to that post. We want to mention a few things that you wouldn't normally think about packing when you go to Disney but we have found these things to be quite useful.

1.First off, get your self lots of Ziplock bags of various sizes.  You will want to pack some empty ones so you can put ice in them when you need to ice your legs back at the hotel.

2.We will also be packing Ziplock bags full of Epsom salt. I will be packing 2 bags with 2 cups of Epsom salt in each bag. This way I will use one full bag in a bath after each race.

3.If you are like me and you have tightness or pain, don't forget your arsenal of massage devices.  I know there has been some controversy last year over whether or not the "stick" is allowed in a carry on, and it indeed is. You may want to pick up a travel foam roller too.
I found this massage capsule at Wal-Mart last weekend. It has gel in it because it is meant to go in the freezer. Not sure if this is something that will be able to be carried on or if I will have to give it to my sister to pack.

4.In another Ziplock bag I will pack all my cords for my electronic devices. Runners have a lot of electronics. I'll have a charger for my camera, my phone, my Garmin, ( another Garmin I will be borrowing), and my ipad.  I always hate looking through my luggage on the day of check out to make sure I have all of my chargers. This way I pack them right in a clear gallon size Ziplock and I know where they all are.

5.Speaking of cords, we have got in the habit of packing an extra power strip. Take all those electronic devices and then times that by two people. That's a lot of stuff to plug in. Hotels are limited in outlets, the power strip comes in handy!

6.I also keep all our travel documents , race waivers, and other important papers in a Ziplock bag so they are all in one place too. Marathon weekend in 2013 we printed all of our waivers a head of time and then once we got on the shuttle bus to go to the expo we realized we left them back in the room. Hopefully that wont happen this time.

7. Last year for Tower of Terror I brought a small trash bag with me ( just one of the white kitchen ones, not a huge Hefty one). I was able to fold this up small enough that it fit in the pocket of my running skirt. I pulled it out once we got to the staging area and it was big enough for me and my friend to sit on until they left us go into our corrals. It was much better than sitting on the concrete. I'll be bringing trash bags with me again!

I'm a carry on gal so I try to stay organized. Hopefully these few tips will help you out!

I try not to pack unnecessary stuff so if you'd like to see what things I'm leaving behind, feel free to read THIS.

What item do you pack for a race that others might not think about?

A Peek in our Week

Welcome to another edition of a Peek in our Week.

I’ve cut down on my running until marathon weekend but this week I finally got to test out my new bike I got for Christmas. I got the Nordic Track with iFIT but I am convinced the best part about it is that it has a fan built in. Note: if you ever by an exercise bike, make sure it has a fan!  -M

I started my New Year (new year’s eve anyway) off with a cortisone shot. My regular doctor was off for the holiday so I had to see the P.A.  This was a little frustrating at first because she was convinced that a cortisone shot was not the answer.  (I know that it is not going to fix the problem but I needed it to get me through marathon weekend).  I asked her what my alternative to the cortisone would be and she said she didn’t know. I showed her where my pain was and asked her what it could be and she said she didn’t know.  I told her I’d been getting the cortisone shots in each hip. She wondered why I was getting the shots in my hips when my pain was behind and beside my knees. I had been wondering this same thing too.  She sat at her computer and read some things for a while (I think she was Web MD-ing me). I was starting to wonder if she was going to give me a Dr. Google diagnosis. In any case I wasn’t about to have her stick a needle in the side of my knee if she didn’t know what she was doing.  Alas she gave me only one shot and it was right below my waist line. I told her I had pain on both sides and that I usually get two shots but she convinced me that the cortisone would work throughout my entire body.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed.  She suggested that I start taking an oral steroid, which I haven’t yet because I want to research what the side effects would be.  She also told me I needed to go to Ortho and I told her that I already went there back in July and they gave me cortisone shots too.  She set me up with an MRI which I will go to on Tuesday.   In the mean time, I think I am going to go to the pharmacy and see if I can pick up a brace or one of those bands for the IT band. My PT told me to not bother with that because it would not help but I’m pretty desperate at this point and will try anything to help get me through marathon weekend! -M

On a better note, I got a much needed manicure and pedicure. My mom had some left over  gift certificates so she treated us to a spa day. -M

The highlight of my week was hosting a New year's Eve party.  We spent the evening with good friends, lots of food, and fun games!  -L

What was the highlight of your week?

Get a Running Journal

Happy Friday folks!

We hope everyone had a fun or relaxing New Year's. Ours was a little bit of both. Now that it is 2015, it's time to look at what lays ahead for the new year. Last year on New Years Eve I took down my calendar and tallied up all my miles for the year. I was quite impressed and I told myself that would be my New Years Eve tradition each year.

I had a training journal in 2014 so that is how I logged most of my miles ( the ones I remembered to log anyway).  Logging my progress was very important for me this past year because I was injured A LOT. The journal I used allowed me to not only keep track of my distance, but also where I ran, what shoes I wore, the weather conditions and how I felt during the run. At first I thought it may be a little too much as it felt like I was writing in a diary, but looking back now, I am glad that I recorded all that data.

The great folks at Gone For A Run are making sure I can continue to log my miles for 2015. They sent me one of their new Running Journals.

1.  They come in a multitude of fun designs and you can even make yours customized.

Another fun thing is that the cover clips on and off so you can use the cover again once you fill up this journal and move it to the next one you get.

3. I'm loving the pages in this journal. It has a place for everything you would want to keep track of.

As an added bonus there is an inspirational quote on each page.

4. This section of the journal allows you to tally up your miles for the week or month.

5. These next parts of the journal are my favorite and something I have not seen in other running journals. Not only can you keep track of your training runs, but there is a section to keep track of the races you've run.

I know I keep track of all my race times (somewhere), but it is now nice to have them all in one place.

I love this page that allows you to keep track of PR's. Just be sure to write in pencil on this page...lol
Below it lets you keep a list of your bucket list races.

This page is actually genius. It lets you keep track of all the races you've registered for!

Last but not least is a notes section.

So what do you think? A great way to start off the new year don't ya think?  If you want more information go to Gone For A Run.

How do you keep track of your runs or workouts?

We were provided free Running Journals courtesy of Gone For A Run.  If you are a fan of Gone For A Run products please be sure to meet up with us in WDW for the marathon meet up next week.  There will be some GFAR prizes given away.

Pasta Specials for Race Weekends at Disney

Happy New Year Folks!  In just a few short days many of us will be starting the new year at Disney World. That means we only have a few more days to get any last minute details nailed down.

Over the years,we have been to the Disney Pasta in the Park Party a few times during both Marathon weekend and Princess Half Marathon weekend.   You can read about the Pasta Party HERE. It's kind of fun to stand in line and wait to go into a secret door in Epcot that not everyone knows about, the food has always been good, and the character interactions are fun. Your admission to the party also includes a wrist band to get into a roped of viewing area for Illuninations.  The only negative thing about the Pasta in the Park Party  ( for us anyway) is the fact that it makes for a very long night.  I don't know about you, but we go to bed VERY early when we have a race the next day ( especially a Disney race).  We actually ended up leaving early and missing Illuminations just this past time when we went to the party.

If you want to carb up before race day but don't want to go to the Pasta in the Park Party you can certainly find some great pasta meals right at the Disney resorts. Some of the resorts offer Marathon or Race day specials. Here are the ones we've found.

1. All-Stars Resort: Last year the Food Court at the All Stars Resorts had a Marathon Special: Your choice of Pasta, sauce, salad, and breadstick and if I remember correctly it was a bargain at only $9.99.
This was the pasta special from Picabu at the Dolphin. I had already ate half of it before I took the picture, so that shows you how large the portion was.

2. Picabu at the Dolphin Resort:  When we were there for the Tower of Terror race weekend, Picabu offered what they called a "Marathon Special" ( even though it was a 10 miler) but it was a meal they offer during race weekends. It was a large plate of pasta and bread stick. I don't remember the price but I think it was  in the high teens or 20's. it was actually pretty tasty and it was so much that I couldn't finish it.

3. The Pepper Market at Coronado Springs Resort has a make your own pasta station and it is a bargain at $9.99.  We have eaten here before and the food is very good. You can choose what sauce you want on your pasta and even add additions like chicken or meatballs.

Shrimp and scallops penne pasta from Big River Grille

4. Big River Grille ( at the Boardwalk): You have 2 great pasta choices here, Shrimp and scallops penne pasta or Chicken Alfredo.

5. II Mulino New York Trattoria  is a full service restaurant at the Swan has a entire menu of Italian fare that includes pasta.

6. Tony's Town Square (Magic Kingdom) is another Italian restaurant where you will be sure to find spaghetti and meatballs and cannelloni on the menu.

7. Trattoria al Forno is Disney's newest Italian Restaurant also located on the Boardwalk. I haven't tried this one yet but think it would make a great option during any race weekend!

8.  Via Napoli in the Italy Pavilion always seems to be a favorite for pasta dishes.

One of the many pasta dishes offered at Rainforest Café.

9. Rainforest Café is always a favorite of ours. It may even be an option for a pre-race meal since it offers several pasta dishes including Rasta Pasta, Planet Earth Pasta, and Pastalaya.

10. Lastly, since we are staying at one of the resorts in the Magic Kingdom resort area for both marathon weekend and PHM, I thought I would make a list of which restaurants serve pasta meals in that area.
Grand Floridian Resort:  Gasparilla Island Grill: Create your own pasta-$12.99
Grand Floridian Café: Orecchiette Pasta- $19.99
Narcoossee's: Key West Shrimp and fettuccine - $39.00

Contemporary Resort: Contempo Café: Chicken Basil Pasta w/breadstick -$8.79
Contempo Café: Pasta and marinara w/breadstick -$6.79

Where is your favorite place to carb up before a Disney race?
