Dinner at Boma at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Several years ago my sister and I did a culinary tour at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.
One of the restaurants we toured was Boma. This was our first experience with this African buffet. One of the items we taste tested during the culinary tour was the Butternut Squash soup. It was so tasty that we said we needed to get back here for dinner.
Well, years went by, but we finally made it back for dinner.

We had spent the day at Typhoon Lagoon, so our reservation at Boma was a little later than when we would normally prefer to eat dinner, especially a buffet. However, this seemed the best time for us to do this during our trip.

Boma is located on the ground floor of Animal Kingdom Lodge.

If you walk through the lobby, the stairs to go down are on the right hand side. If you are not dining here, you can still look down into the restaurant from above!

Our reservation was for 7:35 pm and we were promptly shown to our table.

We were seated near a window, but by this time it was getting dark, so there was nothing for us to see. Once our server came to introduce herself and get our drink order, we were free to make our way to the buffet.

Although I had taken a look at the menu online,  I was still rather hesitant on what to get.

One of the first items I got was the Butternut Squash soup and it was just a good as I remembered it.

The soups, salads, and breads are in the middle of the buffet.  The meats, sides, and main dishes are located at the beginning of the buffet ( right hand side for us), so you'll want to start there.

I don't remember everything I tried here, but there wasn't anything I really disliked. In fact, many of the items I really enjoyed. There is one unique dish I'm going to try to make at home!

Here is a sampling of the menu:

I was feeling adventurous and tried the African spiced beef striploin.

This was so good that I got a second serving. I NEVER eat rare beef and won't even put a piece on my plate if there is any pink on it. Although this meat was not well-done like I prefer, it was cooked perfectly. It was tender and full of flavor.

I don't normally eat salmon, but I tried it this night and it was actually very flavorful, not fishy at all. It was flaky and moist.  And just to be safe, I threw a chicken bite on my plate as well.

African crusted strip loin and potatoes

For the side dishes, the olive oil herbed-crushed potatoes were my favorite! I had seconds of those as well. I also had some seasoned green beans, other vegetables, and a sweet corn pudding that I thought was really good. I had never heard of this dish. I got seconds of those too!

The salads here were not your typical leafy greens you would find on a salad bar. There were a lot of salads already prepared, like bean salads, tabbouleh, slaw, couscous and shrimp salad, chickpea salads, etc.

Some more unique offerings include watermelon and tomato salad, avocado, papaya, and grapefruit salad.  I had never heard of either one of this salads.

Avocado, papaya, and grapefruit salad

The avocado, papaya, and grapefruit salad was my absolute favorite. This was such a great combination of sweet and tart flavors. It was very refreshing too.

Zebra Domes at Disney World

The desserts weren't anything too unique. There were the zebra domes, which are always good, but other than that it was typical desserts you might find at any Disney buffet.

These looked pretty but nothing tasted fabulous.

I did however enjoy the cranberry orange bread pudding.

Disney Tip: You can find the zebra domes for sale at the Mara, the quick service restaurant at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

We actually had a really nice experience here and our server was just so sweet.  Even though this was a buffet meal, she was very attentive to us.

Just outside of the Boma dining room, there were cast members teaching guests how to play the African drums. We stuck around for a few moments and enjoyed their music.
Buffet at Disney World

Overall, this was a really great experience. We went later at night and yet we did not feel rushed at all. The buffet was stocked just as it would be for earlier in the evening. I don't usually enjoy restaurants that are too dark, but this one wasn't so bad and we enjoyed the ambiance.  Our server was great and I really enjoyed all the "new to me" food. There wasn't one thing that was bad.

Buffets at Disney World

As most Disney buffets are, this is a pricey meal.  I'm not sure we will be ready to put this in our dining rotation quite yet, although Lacey has been asking to go there for breakfast next time, so we will see!

Till next time! ~M and L
