The turkey is usually a local "celebrity" such as a mayor. This year it was a Girl's on the Run coach. The goal is to finish before the Turkey finishes.
But this year, they decided to add age group awards, so now there was an incentive, in addition to the Turkey.
Luckily the weather was mild the morning of. Besides a little wind, it was a good day for a race. It started promptly at 9am. The race course was similar to the 4th of July race, but there were not as many hills thankfully. We ran the first mile around town that was completely flat, then we started up a hill towards a development. This was an out and back course. So once we ran up the hill, we had to run to the end of the road and turn around at the cone. When I was down the road I was eyeing up my competition on the other side and I saw three women ahead of me.
They were so far ahead of me that I knew I wasn't going to catch up to any of them. My goal now was to make sure no one passed me. By the time we ran down the hill we only had about a half mile to go. I was feeling pretty good and gave it a kick to the finish and no one did end up passing me. I crossed the finish line with a smile and knew I had placed, but just not sure where.
We waited for the awards. They announced the overall Female and Male and they received a pie and pumpkin roll. Then proceeded with medals for the age awards. I received 2nd place in my age group.
After receiving the medal I headed home to get ready for our big Thanksgiving dinner with family!
Did you race on Thanksgiving? -L
Nice job! Our official turkey trot started too late so I ran a bit more than 10K with friends to start the day!
ReplyDeleteAt least you got a run in. I wish ours was a 10k.
DeleteCongrats on your award. Glad you beat the "turkey."
ReplyDeleteI love Thanksgiving races. I try to always run even if I am hurting (like yesterday).
Hope you had a nice holiday with the family.
Thanks! It was a great morning for a race. Last year it was freezing during my longer race.
DeleteCongrats on the AG! That's always a fun little perk ;-) I ran a decent 5K (fast with all the DOMS I had along with me LOL), but it wasn't a timed race for our turkey trot. Out Trot is pretty low-key, but we do collect food & monetary donations for our local food bank.
ReplyDeleteThat's so nice!
DeleteSeems like you have some fast runners in your home town! Congrats and happy Thanksgiving
ReplyDeleteYea I guess we do, only getting 2nd this yr:) hope your Thanksgiving was good as well.
DeleteCongrats on the AG award. I like out and back races where you can see where the competition is. Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteYes, that was the one good thing.
DeleteI love that they make the race fun by adding in the "beat the turkey" part!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your AG award!
Not sure what time the Turkey comes across but if you beat it, you get a sticker that says I beat the Turkey!
DeleteWe had to leave at 9 to get to my family, so no Turkey Trot again for me this year (and yes, the weather wasn't bad!). Nice job on your AG placement. Hope you had a great day!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Hope yours was well. I was happy for great weather. I may not want to do one next year and jinx myself...ha
DeleteCongratulations! Did you beat the turkey? A running coach could be harder to beat than a mayor. I never do a turkey trot because I’m usually hosting TG.
ReplyDeleteYes I did beat the turkey. Not sure what time she came in! But I know it was after 22 mins. My guess would be probably around 30 mins or so. I'm sure she was giving everyone a fair chance.
DeleteCongrats!!! My TT is tomorrow and it's a half marathon. It's supposed to rain. Should be interesting.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Well goodluck. No fun running in the rain. But I like that distance after Thanksgiving.
DeleteSo fun!!! I love there's an actual Turkey in that race!!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on another great race!
Thanks Rebecca!
DeleteCongrats on snagging AG2! I assume you beat the turkey easily? I ran a turkey trot 5k on Thanksgiving morning, because I had to rush home and prep for our dinner.
