I'm always up for a good smoothie. I generally make them at home and my typical smoothie consist of some Greek yogurt, some frozen fruits, and either orange juice or Almond milk. I admit I often put a little whip cream on top if I have some. So as you can see, it's not too in depth.
This past weekend my mom
and I had an opportunity to try a different way to make smoothies. She came over Friday night and we had a smoothies making night courtesy of Green Blender.
Green Blender is a subscription smoothie box. Since I received my box on St, Patrick's day, all my smoothies were St. Patrick themed. The ingredients came in an insulated box and there was enough to make 5 different recipes. Green Blender not only provided the recipes but also had each ingredient measured out and pre-packaged. All the fruits and veggies looked so good that I was tempted to dig right in and make a salad with it!
Each recipe included a green veggie, a fruit, and what they called a "super booster" packet, which was usually some ingredient I had never heard of.
These were the 5 recipes we made that night..............
Each recipe was suppose to make 2 servings but we got a little bit more than that out of it and had some left over to freeze for later. According to the Green blender website, they say it comes to about $3.90 per serving. They no doubt give you the freshest ingredients and come up with some really healthy combos. However, I found that the taste was just not to my liking. This is no fault of Green Blenders as I think their idea is fabulous, I just have a sweeter palate I guess. The ones I enjoyed the best were the Luck of the eye-rish and the Lepre-clean and I bet that was because there were no leafy greens in there. I should have went with my instinct and made a salad instead.

I don't do smoothies, probably because I need sweet if I'm drinking it and I prefer to eat a salad if I want greens. I don't even own a blender LOL.

DeleteI like smoothies, but I never make them! In the morning I want to be drinking COFFEE and the rest of the day I prefer to eat my calories. This does seem like a fun way to try new smoothie recipes though.

DeleteI do like smoothies after long runs and I usually add protein powder that I purchase at GNC. I also add lots of fruit from the refrigerator and sometimes kale.
ReplyDeleteI've also made smoothies with protein powder from GNC. I really enjoy the peanut butter Quest! This is the first time I've put Kale in a smoothie though!

DeleteWe got to try these at my house too! I'll be posting my review on Wednesday. The only thing we did differently was add kefir in place of water, which helped boost the flavor.

ReplyDeleteI tend to stick to a frozen banana, some greens. But I've experimented with all sorts of smoothies! I got out of the habit this winter, as I don't like cold things in winter, and was just contemplating making one today with some matcha green tea powder.
The weather last week was perfect for smoothies here last week. I don't usually make them in the winter either.
DeleteLove Green Blender! I tend to make my smoothies more sweet to, but I really liked to get out of my comfort zone an try some less sweet ones. I found my taste buds adjusted.

DeleteI like that the ingredients are pre-measured and you get exactly the right amount. But I'm not a giant smoothie fan. I usually like to eat my calories instead of drinking them :) When I do make a smoothie, I tend to just wing it with almond milk, frozen fruit and half a banana since those are things we tend to always have around.

DeleteI go back and forth between having a smoothie a day and not having any at all. I tend to go for sweet smoothies though and rarely put in any greens.

DeleteI haven't done a smoothie in years. I used Kefir to help add more protein, and since I made yogurt smoothies the Kefir usually fit right in.

ReplyDeleteI'm not a real lover of green smoothies, but I'll do the pure juice no problem. I typically just sweeten up my greens with a Fuji apple and that does the trick, but I also like lemon and ginger to spruce up the flavor, as long as it doesn't contradict the flavor I'm going for.
ReplyDeleteThis is super interesting to read about the smoothie kits! I'd heard a little bit about them but was skeptical. It's nice to hear your thoughts because I like my smoothies sweeter, too. Yes to making a salad instead, our gut tells us these things for a reason. =)

ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting service. I think I'm the same as you - I'd probably rather eat my leafy greens in a salad instead of in a smoothie. I've had spinach in smoothies before and while it tastes find, I like the crunch you get when eating fresh vegetables!

DeleteIntriguing! I've used most of these ingredients in recipes in the past but never thought of putting some of them in a smoothie! I'm with you though....I have a sweeter tooth and would enjoy the sweeter smoothies much more!
ReplyDeleteI had a tart cherry/banana smoothie for lunch - so convenient when I'm away from home and can bring lunch. I usually have a smoothie a couple of times a week.
ReplyDeleteThese are SO creative! I throw protein powder and fruit in the blender and call it a smoothie but these are legit! I'm thinking I'd really like lepre-clean :)
ReplyDeleteI tried spinach in a smoothie a few years back when it first became the craze. It was terrible. I threw the smoothie out. Which hurt my frugal heart. But it was awful. I don't trust anyone that says you can't taste it. Haha.
