I always thought that I need my music to run. To be honest, I never thought I would be able to get through a long distance race without it. I mean come on, running 13.1 or even 26.2 miles without my music would be pretty boring if not awful. But somehow I've managed to do it not once but several times. Of course these were during races where I was running with someone else. During races where I am running on my own I DEFINITELY need my music.
My sister and I are both "old fashion" as we call it. We don't have blue tooth head phones and we still listen to a playlist on our trusty ipods, not phones. But hey, it works for us and if it's not broken......
So being the old fashion 30-somethings that we are, there are a few things on our playlist that lets just say we should probably be embarrassed to admit we listen too.
1. Justin Beiber - I have to admit, he's had some pretty catchy tunes lately. I've even been able to find some of his slower music as dance mixes which make for perfect songs for on my running playlist.
2. Sam Tsui- Sam has been one of my favorite artists for several years now. I don't even know how I discovered him. It must have been through You Tube. He started out doing covers of pop songs and I love his Summer Medleys which are a mash up of the most popular summer songs by year. He sings in a very "Glee" type manner. He recently started recording original material and I really hope he becomes a huge star! Here are the links to the Summer Pop Medleys if you want to check them out. FYI: 2011 and 2012 are my favorites. You can search for other ones by year.
3. Ode to the 80's- Before I lost all my music I did have a few 80's song on my ipod. I haven't been able to replace all my tunes yet but I did have a few Michael Jackson songs, The Who, Super Tramp, and wait for it......A Debbie Gibson song. I don't even remember which one it was but it was really up beat.
4. I admit I have a Miley Cyrus song on my playlist. I've never been a fan of Miley, but I have to admit that Party in the USA is one of my faves. This song was playing on my ipod when our plane was landing in Las Vegas when we visited for the Rock n Roll Marathon weekend a few years back. Now every time I hear this song I think of all the lights I've seen from the strip while in the airplane!
5. Okay I do have some modern tunes by artist such as Taylor Swift, Pitbull, Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons, Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez, R.Kelly, Usher, Flo Rida, American Authors, Drake, and Train, and Jamie Grace.
And o yea, on Friday, this happened........
I lost the little speaker cover on the one earbud. I'm not exactly sure what happen because I only noticed it when I got to the trail. I think I may have got it caught in the console of my car ( like I did before) but I can't find the piece. So for Friday's run I only wore one earbud.
So tell us, what's on your playlist that you'll admit to listening to? -M
We'll be linking up with the gals from TOTR.
I'm all about the 80s music. I'm more old school when it comes to my music choices, though I do have a few newer songs on my playlist.
ReplyDeleteI use to be like that but a few years ago I felt I really needed an update!
DeleteI am old school and listen to my music with headphones and ipod too. I find Beyonce motivates me to run faster!
ReplyDeleteBeyonce is one artist I actually do not have on my ipod. I bet my sister does though!
DeleteConfession: I have Party in the USA on my running playlist too :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd now I totally want to download Debbie Gibson. She was my FAVORITE way back when. :-)
Haha! Glad to hear that!
DeleteI have some Biebs on my playlists too! I still run with my MP3 player once in a while...I use to always run with it even when I was "forced" (by my husband!) to get an iPhone. However, it is so much easier with all the apps I have now to just run with my phone. I have quite a playlist of country music - pop - rap - rock...it depends on the run :) I totally agree "If it ain't broke..." :)
ReplyDeleteYup! We don't normally carry our phones on a run so it's just as easy to wear our ipods around our wrists. They're very light weight!
DeleteI just transitioned to the bluetooth headphones. I was hesitant to give them a try. But I have to admit I agree that Justin Bieber has had some catch songs lately and I was even thinking of adding Sorry to my playlist.
ReplyDeleteYup, I totally have the Dance version of Sorry!
DeleteYea, I have quite a variety too. Come to think of it, I think "only in my dreams" was the Debbie Gibson song I was thinking of.
ReplyDeleteI honestly dont feel like I can move if i dont have music. An iPod is a MUST.
ReplyDeleteThough I have started using Spotify on my phone. I feel very high tech - but hate its using my data plan .UGH
I love Black Eyed Peas songs for running too... & I even have some Kanye West on there. I'm so embarrassed to admit that ;) haha
Oh yea, I did have a song by the black eyed peas on my old playlist.
DeleteRight now Paul and I love the Meghan Trainer song ME Too!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think i've heard that one. I'll go check it out.
DeleteMy son LOVES Party In the USA! Last summer he had it in infinite repeat ! I'm just hoping that he doesn't come home telling me he wants to listen to Justin Timberlake's new song, I will just have to cut our internet, and move us to a mountain!
ReplyDeleteI hope you find new headphones that won't fall apart!
I think my husband has a few extra pair I can borrow!
Deleteok so now I feel old! I have a Rick Springfield song and some Asia :)
ReplyDeleteOh I would totally put on some rick springfield had I thought of it. I may have to look up Asia and see what they sing.
Deletetotally have a few Bieber songs on my Spotify running list, no shame there! one of my friends has great playlists he creates all the time, so i'm always pulling music off those for my own playlist, or just listening to his. i love all types of music and the more upbeat and fun the better (for running).
ReplyDeleteI agree!
DeleteI still have my Ipod from 2007 when I ran my first half marathon, LOL!!!! I love all different kinds of music from Mumford and Sons to Linkin Park!
ReplyDeleteOh I had some mumford and sons on my old playlist. Thanks for the reminder that they're one i'll want to put on this new one too!
DeleteI also have a little Miley on mine! :) Its been a while since I listened to music while running, though...it's mostly podcasts now!
ReplyDeleteLooks like quite a few people have Miley on theirs. I guess it's not such a bad pick afterall!
DeleteI like modern day pop... Taylor Swift, Jestin Bieber, One Direction, Sia, Pink. I have very modern tastes for a 40 something....
ReplyDeleteI think I would like your playlist!
DeleteI don't listen to music anymore. I really wouldn't know a Justin Bieber song if I fell over it (except his most current single that they play a lot), but I actually do enjoy a lot of Pop (and yes, Debbie Gibson & Tiffany back in the day).
ReplyDeleteI think Miley is hugely talented, but other than Party in the USA (which I like), and The Climb -- which I loved and was on my playlist back when I did run to music, I don't know any of her songs, either.
Yea, I probably could only identify maybe 3 or 4 of her songs as well.
DeleteI"m all over the place with my music. I've run to everything from Miley to Ellie to Country to dance music to intrumentals.... As long as it isn't folksy. Or showtunes. Well, there are a few that I would be ok with.
ReplyDeleteI totally could pick a few show tunes to put on my list!!!
DeleteI guess that makes me old fashioned too as I use an ipod and not my phone for music. I have switched to bluetooth headphones and love them! I listen to a lot of EDM music actually-the beats are fast and keeps my cadence up. On long runs, I listen to podcasts or books so I can be a bit more distracted (and also slow down)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you could use the bluetooth headphones with the ipod? Maybe mines just too old.
DeleteI do love me some 80's music! Those were the days! I so need to make a playlist- I have never sat down and done it! Pitiful I know!
ReplyDeleteWhat do you listen to on your runs?
DeleteOh I have party in the USA on mine too, I feel no shame in it either. I also have her hoe down throw down song lol yeah now that a tad more embarrassing to admit lol.
ReplyDeleteI still use headphones and even more old school I use a mp3 player that is waterproof lol
See, Miley isn't all that bbad of a choice! Although I have no idea what that hoe down throw down song is. I may have to look that one up!
DeleteI haven't made a new playlist for years. I still have one with some Spice Girls on it!
ReplyDeleteYa know, I could probably only tell you one song from the spice girls. I'm totally not familiar with them except I know Mel B is on AGT. I don't even know which spice girl she was...lol
DeleteHa, I feel silly listening to Taylor too, but you are right, she's so upbeat!
ReplyDeleteMy play list is very ecclectic. I have a lot of AC/DC, Bon Jovi, U2, Journey, Eminem, Madonna, Def Leppard, Justin, Flo Rida, One Republic....I could go on. I'm a child of the 80's, so there yo go....the ultimate decade for music ;-)
ReplyDeleteLately I've veered away from making playlists and I've just been using Google Play or Pandora for running music. I like that it's unpredictable! I also love listening to podcasts on my runs. They make me feel like I'm with someone, and I'm focusing so hard on the conversation I stop thinking about the run!
ReplyDeleteYES to Justin. B or T. ;) I am so glad I'm not alone there. ha!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I love to hate Justin, his songs lately are GOOD! Love that Company one!
ReplyDeleteI had to run with one earbud during my 5k in October because I lost a covering, I think in the porta-potty, but I'm not sure. I figured the porta-potty could keep it and I wasn't that desperate.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit there are some JB songs that get my toes tapping like #thatpower and I love all the 80's stuff! Bring it!
ReplyDeleteI don't really make playlists anymore. I go for the random things on Pandora or Amazon. And if I'm not digging music, I run with a podcast or even just nothing!
ReplyDeleteI listen to mostly pop from the 90's/2000's. Brittney Spears in particular haha
ReplyDeleteGuess I'm too old for this playlist! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm an old-school iPod runner too 😊 I secretly enjoy Taylor Swift... And Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, the oldie but goodies! Lecrae is a favorite too!
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of 80's on my playlist... some Elvis... lots of Green Day.
