Running Fuel : New Spring Flavors to Look For
I am SO happy that Spring is upon us now! I can actually go outside in short sleeves with OUT a jacket, Hallelujah! Another sign that winter has come to an end is that I have ONE Iced Gingerbread Clif bar left. Remember that case I bought last year? I am actually surprised they lasted this long, but to be honest, I hadn't been running, so I hadn't been eating them. I think Scott had been eating them for breakfast on the go!
So now I must be on the look out for some new Spring flavored running fuels.
1. Clif Bars: The new Clif bar flavors for Spring are Berry Pomegranate Chia and Nuts and Seed. I also saw that they have an Apricot flavored one out too that I want to try.
In addition to the bars, Clif also has some new
Organic Energy Food ( those puree pouches) for 2015. The new flavors are Banana Mango Coconut which, I actually think sounds tasty, Banana Beet Ginger, which I might try out of curiosity, Sweet Potato with Sea Salt, which I would be a little iffy about tasting, and Pizza Margharita which I couldn't even imagine eating out of one of those pouches!
The rest of these may not be seasonal flavors or limited editions but they are great flavors that will have you thinking Spring.
2. Honey Stinger Waffles: You know we love our Honeystingers! The Gingersnap flavor was our favorite during the fall and winter months but this spring we will be stocking up on Strawberry and Lemon.
3. GU's : Salted Watermelon. Try it. You'll love it. This is the official flavor for the Rock n Roll series and when it first came out it was hard to find ( other than at an RnR race). Now you can pretty much find them anywhere. Stock up. (Just on a side note, did you know that there is a Salty Watermelon Pepsi? I think it's only available in Japan)
4. Lara Bars : The new flavor of Uber bar for 2015 is Dark Chocolate Raspberry. I'm not really a huge fan of the Uber bars just because of all the nuts in them. From a post we did last week, I already know that many of you love Key Lime pie. Perhaps you would want to try the Key Lime Pie Lara bar, or maybe the Coconut Cream pie one.
5. If all the GU's and bars are not for you, perhaps you might want to stay hydrated with some Watermelon Nuun. The watermelon flavor is not available yet, but it is listed as a seasonal flavor so hopefully it will be available soon.
I recently read an article about Flavor Trends ( yes, apparently that is someone's job to analyze which flavors of things are popular). Anyway, it is no surprise that the top flavor for 2014 was Pumpkin Spice. It is predicted that the top flavor for 2015 is going to be Sriracha, which actually doesn't surprise me seeing how that flavor keeps showing up everywhere lately. What did surprise me, in a good way, was that the second flavor that they predict will be trending for 2015 is Grapefruit. I love grapefruit anything so I will be looking forward to more stuff in this flavor. The article where I saw this was somewhere on Forbes.
If you missed it, you can see our Holiday ( Fall and Winter) flavored fuels post HERE.
Have you tried any of these flavored fuels already?

We are food twins on the HoneyStinger Waffles! I hadn't heard about the new Clif flavors. I don't love the texture of Clif bars as much as I do some of the others, but I always like to try a new flavor.
ReplyDeleteI loved the salted watermelon Gu the first time I tried it and actually bought a 24 count box! My favorite flavor of Nuun is Kona cola and everything I drink it I think of Ironman Kona and that lovely island on Hawaii! So glad spring is finally here!
ReplyDeleteAccording to Nuun, watermelon should be back sometime next month. :-)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Clif had organic energy food. I've only ever eaten the bars, gels, and chews. I want to try the watermelon Nuun!
ReplyDeleteI love grapefruit as well so this makes me excited! I saw that Honey Stinger's new chew flavor was grapefruit so I'm interested to try those out. Happy spring ladies!! :) -C
ReplyDeleteWatermelon nuun and grapefruit sound great! Thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteI want the strawberry honey stinger waffle! Yum!
ReplyDeleteHow often do you use these? I have tried the jellybeans once during the princess half marathon and I'm not sure if I really benefited from them. I've never used or taken anything the majority of my runs, be them long or short. I tried a waffle once during a 10k but just a few bites. Is it something I should add to my routine? I normally eat a banana before a short run and a banana and bagel before a long one. I just don't like extra carbs very much if I can avoid them they go right to my midsection.
ReplyDeletei love larabars - they are my absolute favorite! and i do like the watermelon nuun :)
ReplyDeleteI have watermelon Nuun! Love it!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the taste of the Salted Watermelon Gu! Perfect for a spring or summer race!
ReplyDeleteGood on grapefruit. I can find it most any time of the year in Texas and I love it!
ReplyDeleteOoh, watermelon nuun sounds great, I'll definitely have to look for that! And I'm a fan of grapefruit so I'm glad to hear that will be a big flavor this year.
ReplyDeleteWatermelon Nuum sounds good! Definitely gonna give this a try!
ReplyDeleteWatermelon Nuum sounds good! Definitely gonna give this a try!
ReplyDeleteI love the watermelon nuun! Still haven't found the watermelon gu in my running store and I really want to try it before buying a whole box...the hunt continues!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I will have to try that watermelon Nuun - I love an icy cold bottle of my strawberry lemonade flavor, so I bet that one will be equally as refreshing!
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm running seriously I'll have to start trying different things like this! Nuun sounds great...watermelon nuun sounds even better! And anything that's Banana Mango Coconut-flavored I'm sure I'll love. Thanks for the update on these! I wouldn't have gotten this info any other way.
ReplyDeleteSalted Watermelon... mmm... that sounds delish!
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to trying some of the new Clif Bar varieties!
ReplyDeleteHoney Stinger just came out with grapefruit flavored stingers so I think their flavor predicter is spot on!
ReplyDeletethe salted watermelon Gu is the only one that I can take without my stomach hurting. and i love the article about flavors-pumpkin spice was definitely 2014 and Sriracha is everywhere. I also love grapefruit so I hope it gets more traction soon
ReplyDeleteI love those honeystinger waffles! and I love watermelon and grapefruit so I am on the look out! Thanks for the heads up!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried any of these flavors yet...but the watermelon GU actually sounds awesome-I have to go out and try and find some! Happy Friday and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed that the grapefruit trend takes off!

I've been really into Nuun lately. I'll have to check out the watermelon. The salted watermelon Gu is pretty good. I love honey stinger waffles but haven't the strawberry yet.
ReplyDeleteI really want to try the honey stinger waffles. Everybody says they're great!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge fan of the fuels...most of them are too sweet for me. I've been liking Kind bars these days.
ReplyDeleteGrapefruit, yes; sriracha, not so much! I'm hooked on Health Warrior Chia Bars.
ReplyDeleteI love the watermelon nuun! I also really like the triberry flavor nuun, I think that is a pretty springtime flavor too.
ReplyDeleteI have a pouch of Salted Watermelon Gu but I haven't tried it yet.
ReplyDeleteI love the watermelon and grape Nuun, and I have been using Salted Caramel Gu.
I loved the Watermelon Nuun! I hope it does come back. The Salted Watermelon Gu is good too. I go for the fruitier flavors as it gets warmer, a heavy chocolate peanut butter or caramel just isn't appealing on a long, hot run.
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous! I looked everywhere for the Iced Gingerbread Clif bars but couldn't find them! I did stock up on some gingerbread honey stinger waffles though!
ReplyDeleteLOL for the flavor trend analysis, but I am not surprised. I work in marketing and for companies to stay ahead and offer consumers what they want, they need to know which flavors are hot. The only one that rings a bell is pumpkin spice. As I don't eat many protein bars, I haven't noticed the other flavors.
ReplyDeleteA lot of these are new to me except for the Honey Stingers. I"m kind of boring when it comes to fueling flavors. I prefer the chocolate honey stinger waffle :)
ReplyDeleteThe only Gu I can stand is the Salted Caramel, but I actually do enjoy that one! My honey stinger gummies have been doing a number on my stomach in races lately, so I've switched to Gu which seems to reduce the post race nausea and cramping! My husband is addicted to siracha but I don't think I'd want to eat much that had that flavor.
ReplyDeleteI don't use any fuels like this . But I have heard a lot of great things about Nuun so that is one I may have to try.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the watermelon Nuun.

ReplyDeleteLove having all of these new options in one place! I haven't tried any of these flavors, but from the comments section, it looks like I'm going to have to try Watermelon Nuun. Thanks for the tips, everyone!

I love lara bars, but I do usually make my own version as they are much cheaper.
