Last summer I shared with you how I was running on the trail
and it was so humid that my contact fell out of my eye. Luckily my eye doctor
was located along that same trail, so I was able to walk about the two miles to
the office (with the contact cupped securely in my hand) and wash out and
re-insert my lens.
What I did not tell you was that about 2 weeks prior to
that,
I did have an actual eye dr. appointment.
I took off my glasses, sat in the chair, looked through the lens machine
thing and heard the dr say “Is this better, or is this better” as she flipped
between two different eye chart screens with letters on it. Honestly, both of them were really fuzzy, so
she switched to two more screens. I was starting to panic because I couldn’t
see either of those either. We went through this a few more times and as we
did, I could feel my chest getting heavy and my eyes starting to swell up from
holding back tears. Am I going blind without my contacts or glasses?
My eye doctor was starting to become concerned too so she
double checked the machine and found out that it was so humid that there was
moisture built up on the lenses I was looking through! That explained why
everything I was seeing was fuzzy. All
was good and I ended up with the same prescription lenses I had before.
Even though things ended well at the eye doctor that day, I
know my vision is far from perfect and my eye sight is something that I
continuously worry about.
Shortly after
this visit, I discovered Bausch & Lomb Ocuvite eye health gummies! As soon as I saw these in my local drug
store, I thought “OMG, I could use these” It seems I need one prescription to
watch TV and a different one to read books (or even texts on my phone). I don’t actually have two different prescriptions
so I spend a lot of time taking my glasses on and off and holding my phone an
arms length away to read it!
These are eye vitamin and mineral supplements and I know
that it’s not going to drastically change my vision but perhaps they could
prevent it from getting much worse.
Along with Vitamins C and E, these tasty gummies also
contain Lutein and Zeaxanthin, which are found in the eye. Our body does not naturally
make the Lutein and Zeaxanthin it needs so we need to provide it by eating
green veggies ( eggs and oranges also contain Lutein and Zeaxanthin).
Without getting too sciency here ( remember, I am a former
Nutrition teacher so I love talking about stuff like this) I will tell you that
it is believed that people who get enough Lutein and Zeaxanthin have a reduced
risk of developing cataracts and age
related macular degeneration (or at least slow the progress of it).
I don’t normally make New Year resolutions ( or ones I end
up keeping anyways), but I am starting to take these gummies every day and hope
to repurchase them throughout the year.
Although I bought these at a store, you can get them on
Amazon for about $11.48. -M

Taking these sound like a good idea! Thanks for the thoughtful review.
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome. It's always nice to find a new product.
DeleteInteresting! Although I don't need prescription glasses (or contacts) yet, I can tell things have changed. I do have prescription readers, but I have tons of other OTC readers in almost every room. I'm just not ready for bi-focals, but that's probably gonna be a reality eventually.
ReplyDeleteSounds like I'm headed for bifocals too!
DeleteI'm very protective of my eyes -- it's why you rarely find me outside without sunglasses on -- year round.
ReplyDeleteI can read perfectly fine without anything (thank you, life long near sightedness & middle age), but I can't watch tv without contacts/glasses and definitely can't see to drive without them. It kind of drives me nuts that I can't read well with them, however & I've tried bifocal contacts but they don't help much.
Hopefully I'll be able to wear contacts the rest of my life because I hate wearing glasses to run in -- and quite frankly don't really enjoy wearing glasses at all, but it's a necessary evil.
I often wonder if I will be able to wear contacts all my life too. I hope so!
DeleteWow! How troubling it must have been to have everything seem blurry at the eye dr.'s. So glad to read it was the machine - not you!
ReplyDeleteYea, I was really starting to worry!
DeleteI don't think my comments have been working but I will try again . I am lucky to have great eye sight
ReplyDeleteYou are very Lucky Patrick!
DeleteEye health is something i don't think about too often but probably should! Happy Friday thanks for the linkup
ReplyDeleteYou must be blessed with 20/20 vision!
DeleteI wear one contact for near and one for far. It works because I hate glasses.
ReplyDeleteI do see better near without and better far with glasses. But not enough to make me switch to glasses.
I used to do that too! Eventually I switched to transition contacts but I'm not convinced it's better than what you are doing.
DeleteYikes, that sounds like a scary experience at the eye doctors! I had no idea that there were vitamins for eye health, I’ll have to look into them.
ReplyDeleteI've only got through one bottle so far, so of course I don't see a difference yet but I hope it will help in the long term.
DeleteThat story is like a bad dream! I'm glad she/you figured it out so quickly! Lutein is in egg yolks I think but I'm interested to check these out. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is in eggs! Actually corn in a good source too.
DeleteI see the bottle says that Lutein and Zeaxanthin help filter blue light - I would love to hear the "too sciency" explanation!
ReplyDeletesome how they protect the cells in your eyes to filter it out. That is a big job because "blue light" is everywhere, even the sun!
Deletethis is a total new to me product so thanks so much for discussing it on your blog today. I'm going to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that your experience at the eye doctor ended on a positive note - what a stressful experience for sure!
Thank you! I hope you are able to find these gummies! let me know what you think.
DeleteI would have freaked out too when everything was blurry!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I had that issue a few years back where I could see NOTHING but black spots - I realized right then how invaluable eye sight is & how we take it for granted!
What was the reasoning for seeing the black spots?
DeleteOMG I had the blurry/foggy thing happen too once - it freaked me out as well! Thanks for the recommendation on the eye vitamins, I'll have to give them a try.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the reason for your blurry/fogginess? was it the machine?
ReplyDeleteinteresting! I never really considered taking supplements for eye health. I have terrible eyes, have always had glasses (contacts later), since I was 1 year old! While i'm still able to wear contacts there will be a time when it's just not possible anymore. as it is the right eye is not working that well anymore with the left, but there's not much I can do about it. I'll have to have a look to see what is available here !
ReplyDeleteMy eye doctor recommended some vitamins when I had my last visit with them. Good to know they are available at Amazon because the ones my doctor suggested were sold at their office. Since everything at the eye dr costs $$$$, I didn't even check into the price! My eye sight has certainly been challenged lately. Seems like 50 yrs is a big year for change in vision! I'm glad I got a bigger phone so I don't need my readers to look at it anymore :)
