I had an opportunity to meet with the founder of Altra Drop Zero shoes and see why they are so unique. I also got to try out different pairs of Altras and I was gifted a pair that worked best for me!

I am debating between the Intuitions ( on my right) and the Torins (on my left).
What makes the Altra Zero Drop shoe different than most other running shoes is that the heel is not elevated. Most running shoes are built on a 2 to 1 ratio, meaning they are twice as thick in the heel as they are in the forefoot. If you are a lady, you know the implications of wearing high heeled shoes all your life, right? Well even though I am going to extremes with this analogy, you are essentially doing the same thing when you are running in a shoe with the 2 to 1 ratio. Your heel is elevated when you run.
The Altra Zero Drop Shoes are built on a 1:1 ratio, meaning the heel and the forefoot are at the same level. This allows your body to run naturally, as if you were barefoot.
Because your heel and forefoot are the same distance off the ground you will experience less heel strike, you will reduce the impact on your joints, and will help with form and body posture.
All of these things combined means less injuries!
But wait, that's not all!
Another unique aspect of Altra's design is the foot box! the foot box is actually designed like the outline of a foot. This design allows your toes to actually spread out when you run ( like they are naturally suppose to do)!
When you do get your new Altras, you do need to proceed with caution! You are not going to put these shoes on and go for a 10 mile run ! Altra actually recommends that you start wearing them on your easy runs, and then rotate them with your old running shoes for the first couple of weeks. The reason for this is because if you are not use to the zero drop, you will start to feel it in your calves. These shoes are actually helping to build calf strength too. I admit, my lower claves were sore the first couple of times I ran in these shoes, but just like anything, it takes your body time to adjust to it. In the long run, I think these shoes are making my legs stronger! Another thing I want to mention about these shoes is that I feel that they run small. I normally wear a size 6 running shoe and I had to get a size 6.5 in these Intuitions. Truth be told, I probably could have even went to a size 7, but I have never worn a 7 in any shoe before and I was a bit skeptical about increasing my size by that much. But so far the 6.5 has worked for me. I received these shoes in October and started doing smaller runs in them. In November I ran my first race in them ( The Disney Jingle Jungle 5K) and then in December I did 13.1 miles in them.
Another great thing about Altra ( as if you weren't sold on them already, right?), is that they really care about kids feet too! If you think it is important for adult runners to have the proper shoes, then just think about how important it is for kids who's feet are still developing.
Since many of our readers are Run Disney fans and some even have children that are starting to participate in the Run Disney races too, Altra has agreed to let the winner of our giveaway decide if they want to receive a free pair of shoes for themselves or for their child. Isn't that cool?

I'd probably pick the intuitions!
ReplyDeleteI've had my eye on the Torin. I have a pair of the Lone Peaks and I love them! My feet have never been happier.
ReplyDeleteI love the thought of letting my toes spread out! I would choose the Provisioness 1.5
ReplyDeleteThese shoes are perfect for letting the toes spread out as you run. You would be very please with these!
DeleteI like the ones you have above!
ReplyDeleteOh how cool! I would go for the Provisioness maybe... would have to see which is best for my feet!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try these out! I want to see how the toe box is as I have trouble with my feet being squished when I run.
ReplyDeleteI would pick the Torins in the black and green most likely but I like them all
ReplyDeleteI like the Intuitions.
ReplyDeleteI'd pick the Superior!
ReplyDeleteI've seen these in stores, but have never asked about them or read about them. They sound really cool, and love the fact that they strength calves! Definitely want to give them a try!
ReplyDeleteI'd pick the 3-Sum. Looks like a great shoe.
ReplyDeleteI'd pick a pair for one of my boys!
ReplyDeleteVery cool shoes! I have large feet (women's 11) so I would be interested in seeing how these fit. I also have some overpronation. Hope I can try them one day!
ReplyDeleteSorry this was put in as anonymous.
DeleteOh I absolutely love what Altra is doing. Pick me pick me!
ReplyDeleteI'd probably pick the Torin, since it says one of it's purposes is to reduce shin splints, and I have issues with those. While I don't have a child, I think it's awesome that the company realizes they need "real" running shoes as well!
ReplyDeleteI'd probably pick the Torin. I like the idea of my toes having more room. I sometimes get bad toe cramps during training and maybe more room would cut down on those instances.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat idea - I love the idea of a wider toe box!
ReplyDeleteI have been eyeing the Altra Provisioness for MONTHS. I really want to try them, hoping they'll solve my issue of not being able to find shoes that actually help my feet :(
ReplyDeletelove the color,I would choose the intuitions
ReplyDeleteI love all of the colors! I'd probably choose the intuitions because I like the style!
ReplyDeleteThe Torin is the model I've been eyeing! :)
ReplyDeleteI've been going more and more minimalist - so I'd love to try a pair of Altras. I'm going to try on a few pairs at my local running store before deciding. But these just went on my list to Santa. I've got a LOT of races in Jan- March and I need more shoes! -DisneyBride
ReplyDeleteThe intuition. for ME! :)

ReplyDeleteI've been eyeing Torin's for a VERY long time! You were not kidding about being an amazing giveaway! Score!
ReplyDeleteI would pick the intuitions!
ReplyDeleteI love my torins, I am currently recovering from tibial plateau surgery and would love a new pair to get me back out there in 36 days!
ReplyDeleteI'd pick the Provisioness 1.5.

ReplyDeleteOooh, I really want to try Altras, because my toes take a beating in most every shoe I try!
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a clear explanation about why these shoes are so different - I've seen them around but had no idea why they were special. Now I know, and now I would love to try out a pair!

ReplyDeletei'd choose the intuition!
ReplyDeleteI bought these shoes (the Intuition) a couple weeks ago and love them! I come from barefoot running on the beach, so it really helped me transition nicely to pavement. The only downside is I'm short with big feet, so I look a bit like a clown wearing them. lol! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteSince they don't go up to my size (12.5 - 13 in women's) I'd have to go with the men's. I really like them though! The Torin with the extra cushion would be right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteI think the Intuition would be my pick.
ReplyDeleteI like the Torin adult shoe for myself! My kids are a bit too young yet to have them :)
ReplyDeleteI have Morton's Neuroma in both my feet and I tie my shoes very lose to help. The Provisioness 1.5 would be wonderful!
