Although the temperatures continue to creep into the 90's, I guess I can say that "Summer" running is officially over!
I always have these grandiose running plans for the summer.
I'm going to get up early and run before it gets too warm. I don't work over the summer so I'm going to spend loads of time on the trail. I'm going to be able to run SO many miles and than after that I'll walk tons of miles while listening to whatever audio book I've downloaded that week. I'm going to sign up for at least one race a month, maybe more! I'm going to practice running the race route on the island so when race race day comes I'll be familiar with it.
So, how did this work out for me?
I'd have to double check that stats on my Garmin but I'm pretty sure I didn't make it out the door for a run anytime before 8:00 am. Yea, by that time the humidity already starts to creep up.
I did listen to one audio book while doing a walk/run on the trail and that was enjoyable.
Now let's talk about races.
In the month of June I was dedicated to training for my triathlon. I mostly worked on swimming and biking and trying to run After biking. I was pleased with the results of my first tri so I will call that a win. In fact, that was pretty much my main goal this summer.
Also in June I was suppose to run the Monumental Mile but because of all the road closures due to the parade I totally missed it.
I ran the hot and hilly 4th of July race and I'm serious this time when I say I may forgo it next year.
Also in July I ran Disney's newest resort race the Beignet Dash. I'm hoping to return next summer and run another fun run in that series.
In the month of August I usually run the color run and the Love inc run. I passed on both of them this year. First off those races in August are always so hot and humid. Second of all, I just didn't think I was prepared for such a rugged trail race. Lastly, those races are on the island and with all the rain we've been getting ( and the bugs being worse then usual) I did very little of any training on those wooded trails.
However, just last week I did see that one of those races was postponed from the original date (due to flooding) and will be put on at the end of this month so I guess I get another chance to run it if i want to!
What were your grandiose running plans this summer? To just survive the heat? -M
The best laid plans... Same thing usually happens to my grandiose plans. I thought I would run a lot this fall, but a hip injury is preventing it. Ugh! You did your tri - congrats! That's a big accomplishment. Will you do another one?
ReplyDeleteActually if I can find another one of equal distance and where I can swim in a heated pool, I would definitely consider it! I wont di the same one though because I did not care for the bike route. Too many hills.
DeleteI didn't have any grandiose running plans and it shows in my running mileage! I did a fair amount of cycling and just enough running to not forget how to run. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMaybe you'll get back into running in the fall! I think you were smart to bike rather than run this summer!
DeleteI think this summer challenged a lot of us! The heat and humidity made it tough. I did run the one race I had planned, tho. Missed all my local 10ks. Sigh...
ReplyDeleteYea, we all have plans until we step outside and feel drained by the humidity!
DeleteObviously my grandiose plan was to run my first race longer than a half and I succeeded. :)
ReplyDeleteI have to get out earlier to run in the summer -- I could never run that late down where you live! I just don't do well with heat & humidity.
Sounds like that race being postponed is a great opportunity for you. :)
Its definitely tempting. I'll have to make a decision this weekend before the price increases.
DeleteThe heat was no joke. It seemed now matter how early I tried to get out for a run, it was never early enough! I still have to get out early since the sun has power once it's up. I seriously wondering why I chose an early fall race instead of later in the year.
ReplyDeleteI actually did a treadmill run the other day because it was so hot. I have NEVER done that in the summer before.
DeleteLots accomplished for the summer. That's great!
ReplyDeleteSo where you heading down to the race &got stuck in the blocked roads???? Or did you just not bother because of the parade? To get stuck would be awful - then did you have to sit & watch the runners go by? haha
My summer running did not go as well as planned either! I did do a ton of other workouts but the heat just deterred me quite a bit. I've also been working through this dumb achilles injury. Well, there is always fall!
ReplyDeleteI definitely took a "just survive the heat" approach this to summer. I definitely spent more time cross-training than running.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any fall races planned?
My grandiose plans for summer were to not run a lot of miles, and I can definitely check that one off my list, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those difficult people who refuses to accept summer is over... so I'm running one of my summer goals tomorrow and the other one next week.
ReplyDeleteThose Beignets look amazing!!
I think as long as you hit your A goal of your tri, then you had a pretty darn successful summer! I stayed on track for most of my summer.
ReplyDeleteI did my first tri this summer too! I'll have to go check out your recap. Other than that, I don't know where the days of summer slipped off to so fast. My kids are back in school and life it a hectic pace again!
ReplyDeleteMy big grandiose plan was to enjoy every day of summer. I think I was outside almost every morning, walking when I wasn't running/training. I did a lot of races, and a lot of running. I embraced all the heat and humidity (well, most days LOL) because I was sidelined from all things running last year
ReplyDeleteHa, kind of sounds like the plans I make when I have a day off or a long weekend. I'm going to do all these things! Ha, yeah nope. Sometimes, those best laid plans just lay there. LOL!
ReplyDeleteGood job getting out there though, especially after 8am! I am in Central Florida and boy do I like to get my runs done early. Even then the humidity stinks!
After running a marathon on Memorial Day weekend and pulling a hamstring in June, my summer running started slow but then gained some momentum. I did a few short races and a few half marathons in July and August. My NYC marathon training is pretty much on track!
