I am so sad that this is the last Friday in June! June is always such a good month. Before I get to my Runfessions, I want to share a story with you.
Puppy Reed and then Reed (on the right) with Baylee and Puppy Belle |
June is my birthday month and it is also the birthday of "someone" very special to me. It is no secret that our family loves Yellow Labradors. However, Baylee and Belle were not our first labs. Our first lab was Reed (or Reedy girl). This was a family dog of ours when my sister and I still lived at home with our parents. One evening my mom was sitting at that dinning room table filling out the AKC paper work for our new puppy and all of a sudden she shouted "You're not gonna believe this, YOU and Reed have the same birthday". It was the same month and day, but of course not the same year. I always knew that dog was so special! I never got to formally introduce you to Reedy girl because she passed away 6 months before we started this blog. She had a good life and lived to be 16 . She would have been 21 this month.
1.So I guess for my first Runfession (even though it has nothing to do with running), is that I'm missing Reed this month.
For the duration of my Runfessions, I'll keep them somewhat related to running because that's the fun stuff, right?
2. I've become increasingly more fearful of groundhogs lately. I mentioned to my uncle that I run by this big hole in the ground on the trail and I'm worried a ground hog is gonna pop out of it and chase me as I run by (since I have actually seen groundhogs on that trail near by). He informed me that Groundhogs can be quite aggressive creatures. However, they should have no reason to randomly come after me though, but it still worries me.
I found like 10 more programs after I took this photo. |
3. I did some major cleaning of my den and my desk and I finally got rid of all my race programs. I have a habit of keeping the programs from every single race I've ever done. I'm not sure why. Do I think I need to read through them again to remember the course? I have actually done that a few times as I was writing a blog post about the race but I guess I should have no reason to look through them anymore. I have so many other things to commemorate my races by. In the burn barrel they went. Does anyone else hate burning things? It just seems like such a final ending. I'm a big proponent of donating or giving something to someone else so it can live on but who wants old race programs?
4. During my cleaning spell I've concluded that I have WAY too many Running magazines, I LOVE my magazines, they make me happy but I Runfess that I haven't read them all. Again, this is something I hate to get rid of because I think I would read them someday because there is so much good info in them I am missing out on. I just need to face it, I'm not going to read them. Anyone want past issues of Runner's World or Women's Running?
5. Lastly, I Runfess that my next race is the 4th of July 5K and I am SO not prepared for it. This is the race with the killer hill. I didn't know about the hill last year when I ran it, but afterwards I told myself I had a year to practice and run that hill since it's not too far away from the rail trail I normally run on. But did I ever run that hill since last year's race? NO! At least I know this isn't a race to be "raced" so I'll take my time right out of the gate instead of pushing it thinking that I could do well.
And that's it for June. Can you relate to any of my Runfessions? -M
I had to stop subscribing to magazines because I was never reading them. Now I just read running articles online. Good luck in your 4th of July race!
ReplyDeleteAww that's definitely a very special dog. Amazing how they stay in our hearts. I only save programs from marathon majors now. And I've got my RW stash down to 2. Go me!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on holding onto way too many things, including magazines. I really hope to get through some of them this summer. We'll see how successful I am with that goal!
ReplyDeleteI'm running a 10k on Sunday--it's a local race and I've AG placed every time I've run it. I'm trying to remind myself that finishing is winning bc I'm not in race shape this year...
ReplyDeleteI can understand why you are missing Reedy Girl. :( I'm sorry you're missing her though. I still miss Basic but it comes at different times throughout the year. Hang tough, girl!
ReplyDeleteAwwe such a special story about Reed. Dogs are truly so special. My dog passed away about y years ago and I still think about him all the time. He was a special member of our family, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteI need to do some Spring Cleaning next week and I can't imagine what I am going to find, lol
I do not keep any of my race programs. As for race magazines, I sometimes finish it in one day and then recycle or hold on to it for another day.
ReplyDeleteI keep everything...and it's SO annoying because then I have to clean through all of my race memorabilia later and throw half of it away. So annoying. I'll admit, it took a bit of getting used to, but I'm glad that runDisney now does only electronic programs - that's one less thing to bring home! :)
ReplyDeleteOhhh I think we both have similar pack rat tendencies... I have all those running magazines too... I need to TOSS!
ReplyDeleteReed was such a cutie. It's always so hard to lose pets.
Happy birthday to you and Reed! Pets are the best! they leave us with the sweetest memories!
ReplyDeleteYou will do great on your 5K! it will be short and quick and done!!
(First, I see you have that same stupid Photobucket thing on your blog... did you hear how they are making you PAY to get all your pictures?... SO DUMBBBBBBB)
ReplyDeleteOK - moving on. You make me want another lab so badly. They are just the best dogs.
I have so many running magazines piled up in the corner. I need to get rid of them because honestly, I've never gone back to them so I obviously dont NEED them. & honestly, any info I MAY need, its gotta be online. Its just hard to toss
Sorry about Reed, she was a beautiful dog!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a groundhog while on the run...I'm sure they would freak me out! I don't like seeing wild animals while running!
I've never thought to keep a race program. I do have all my bibs and it's definitely getting a little messy - I need to stop being cheap and buy a nice display case for my medals and bibs!
I let all of my running magazines go. After all, they seem to email me the same articles. I do still have my race programs. They feel so "important". LOL. I don't think I've ever encountered a ground hog. I wonder if we have them around here? I can certainly understand how you miss Reedy girl. (Hugs)
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that groundhogs could be aggressive! I'll have to watch out for them too. The library may want the back issues of the magazines?
ReplyDeleteI am pretty good about tossing the race programs after I read them - saving my bibs and medals is enough for me. I stopped subscribing to RW a couple of years ago and am thinking about resubscribing again when they do a deal - never subscribed to Women's Running but if you want, I'm happy to take your old issues off your hands. :)
ReplyDeleteReedy girl. Funny how we just never forget our favorite pups, no matter how long they've been gone.
I have a July 4 race too, a 5K. Part of it is trail and part road. I guess I'm as prepared as I'll be but I'm not setting any real goals for it either except to have a good hard run.
ReplyDeleteI've only received a race program once! Maybe races here just don't do that? I did keep it though. I tend to get rid of my running magazines and pass them along to my mom to read or just throw them out- everything is online now anyway.
There's a colony of prairie dogs on the other side of the neighborhood. I think they're super cute, and not that I would get close to one, or that they would let me, but my mom said they can be carriers of bubonic plague.
ReplyDeleteWe had a yellow lab named Holly who we got from a rescue organization in 2006, when she was 4 1/2 years old. She was SO SWEET and she got into EVERYTHING. We had to say goodbye to her a few years ago when she was 12. Before that we had a chocolate lab named Coffee who my husband "inherited" from his parents when they moved to another state and they didn't want to take him to the new house.
ReplyDeleteI won't lie. I love that you're afraid a groundhog is going to chase you. That makes me want to SMH, #facepalm and LOL all at the same time. xxoo
ReplyDeleteHow cool that you and Reed shared the same birthday! I've actually never seen a groundhog. I am with you on the training for the hill. I told myself I would do hill repeats to train for a hilly half marathon... you know how many I did - 1.
ReplyDeleteI have every bib from every race. WHY???
ReplyDeleteI don't keep my RW magazines though.
No race this July 4th. There is a 4 miler but it is so crowded so I always skip though it is tempting.
I tend to read my magazines as soon as they come in and get rid of them. I am also convinced that they pretty much repeat a lot of the same topics bc honestly how can there be so many new things to talk about?
