Summer Running : I have the time!

I absolutely love Summer, there is no doubt about that one.  The weather is (my version of) perfect and I have off work, what’s not to love!
One of my favorite running paths.
During the other 9 months out of the year, I feel I need to be very efficient with my time. That means that even though I enjoy running, I can’t really spend the time I want to on the trails.  But during the summer months, I can stay out hours at a time without a care in the world. That would be ideal right?

EXCEPT who wants to be out running on the trail when it’s so stinkin hot???  I guess summer is a double edge sword for me.  I have the time to spend, but I can’t keep myself out there running for long. Last summer I was stuck in what I called the six mile slump. My longest run ALL summer was only 6.2 miles.  Even then I felt like I was going to melt.  Running in the heat never really bothered me until the last year or so. I guess I can chalk this one up to age.

My summer has been so busy so far that I haven’t had any of the “me time” on my favorite rail trail yet this year.  I remember last year my favorite moment on the trail was when it was just me and my ipod. I downloaded a Stephen King short story titled “Gingerbread Girl”.  It was a story about a lady who ran and it lasted about 2 hours. I ended up spending those two hours on the trail just walking. It was glorious and I still got my miles in. It was a great alternative to pushing myself to run in the heat.

So, even if it is too hot to run, I’ll still try to get out and walk (or bike or do something) because I feel like I need to savor this weather.  I want to know that I made the most of my summer.
Do you still get out in the heat?  Can you give me suggestions of other “short stories” I can download? What do you do when you have more free time?

We're linking up with the gals from TOTR. I accidentally swapped topics with last week.

  1. My son and I listened to Serial on the way to and from Door County this weekend. After doing that, I don't think I could run to a story. I kind of zoned out a lot of the time. When I listen to music, I can match my steps to the cadence, etc.

    1. Oh I know I couldn't run while listening to a story that's why I like to walk and listen!

  2. Our summer hasn't been super hot for the most part, but the humidity . . . still, it's been a good summer so far.

I really enjoy walking, too, and of course I have the dogs for that. Except Lola is more heat sensitive the older she gets. Generally I have to get them out pretty early, and that makes juggling the runs interesting.

  3. I sure wish long daylight hours and cooler weather coincided with each other better! Your trail sounds so peaceful and relaxing!

  4. I get what you are saying about this heat! I love it, but it's hard to run in it!

Do you have a library card? if yes, download overdrive and borrow books through it.

    1. I do have a library card. Most of the audio books are like 5 hours. I'm looking for something a little shorter.

    2. There is a few that were decent that were shorter... Let me think.... When breath becomes air is roughly 5.5 hours, excellent book! very sad, but great.

  5. I wish I had suggestions for you on the heat but it's killing me this year. Sometimes having more time means I get less done lol

  6. I know when I was younger, the heat didn't seem to bother me at all. I could be outside for however long I wanted, run back into the house for some water, then back outside. I worked sports camps and then went to sports camps. Trained for soccer through the summer. It was great.

    1. I probably spend more time outside in the summer as an adult than I did as a kid.

  7. I actually do better in the summer since I'm a night time runner. So while its still hot, at least its light out late & I can go later when the sun is setting & it not be ASSSS miserable.

  8. The 8 years we lived in FL, summer was miserable to run...but I still loved it. I just embraced the sweat and then the pool!

  9. Funny because summer running bothers me less as I get older! I used to despise it, but now I don't mind it. I think for me being consistent helps too so it's not a shock to my system as it can be with more infrequent runs.

  11. That is kind of a dirty trade off! Less time, nice running weather. More time, sweltering heat! My "more time" season seems to be whenever I'm not training for a marathon :) With that extra time, I like to enjoy an extra hour of sleep in the morning. Sleep is worth it! And I've noticed the heat bugs me more as I'm getting older, too. Maybe it does get worse with age?

  12. I had last summer off and it was heavenly.

This summer, I am working and it seems to be raining most of the time.

I listen to running podcasts during my runs.It helps me get through them. I don't were a watch so I don't care if I am running fast or slow or walking.
