Summer Runfessions

1. I runfess that I actually worry that I may drop my things in the potty at the trail. When I use the facilities there after my run, I am in my full gear (visor on, running pouch on (I've been using the Roo lately), sun glasses on, Ipod on) and I'm worried that something is going to fall off and go ALL the WAY DOWN!

This happened to me before at Princess half marathon last year.  Because Disney races start at O Dark Thirty, it's dark in the port o potties. I decided to bring a key chain flashlight for our little group to use. Yup, I was the one who dropped it in the potty and down it went. Thank goodness i was the last one in our group to use it.

2. I noticed my clothes were getting a little tight so I wanted to lose 5-6 lbs this summer. I tried to cut back on sugar and am proud to say that I did not eat any Sour Patch kids this summer!  Because I do not own a scale I didn't really monitor my progress or lack there of so I just bought new clothes in a larger size..lol

3. I put my gym member ship on hiatus for the month of August.  Since it didn't look like I was increasing my mileage like I wanted, I thought perhaps I could do some of the same strength training at home.  Turns out I hadn't been keeping up with it so I will return to the gym in September!

4. At this point in the summer my highest mileage has only been 5 miles....womp, womp. (Hence why I didn't think I needed to go to the gym)

5. Carrying my hand held water bottle is starting to bother me. Because of the heat and humidity I've been carrying it on all my runs this summer. I figured I should get use to it because I'll want to carry it during my half marathon this fall. The problem is it is starting to hurt my shoulder.  This never happened before so I don't know what's up.  Hopefully I can convince my sister to wear her hydration belt during the half and hold my water in there.

What do you have to Runfess this month?  -M

We will be linking up with the gals from the Friday 5.

  1. I had problem with my handheld hurting my shoulder when I was running too many back to back long runs. Interesting that it's hurting you when your mileage is down.

    1. It didn't seem to bother me last year when I was even running longer distances. Go figure!

  2. I also get really nervous about dropping anything down the portopotty! Luckily it hasn't happened but I am mostly concerned about my phone because wear it on my flip belt! I turn it to the front and make sure its all the way in just to be safe.

  3. my phone fell into the toilet last week bc I had it in my back pocket. I quickly grabbed it out and it was thankfully fine. Yes I do worry about that as well.

  4. Way to go on skipping on the sour patch kids! are those your favorite candy? The scale at my parents house says that I put on weight too, but I don't care for the numbers on the scale, as long as my clothes fit!

The fear of dropping the phone is the toilet is one that follows me too! it's worst at the portable toilet!

  5. I actually read an article last summer about holding things while running. They said it was bad for you and can throw not only your stride off, but be bad for your arms and shoulders. It still hasn't stopped me from running with my phone in my hand during a runDisney race. :)

    1. Makes perfect sense! I never carry my phone at races but I do have it in my pocket and only pull it out when necessary!

  6. Can I say, I give you a huge thumbs up & pat on the back for not owning a scale. That stupid number wears on me & can change my mood something fierce.
I've always got that fear of dropping things in the bathroom too :) I feel you

    1. Yup, no scale! I guess I was going to gage my progress on whether or not my pants fit!

  7. I lost an earbud in the portapotty last October, so I was paranoid at Tink. It wasn't quite 0 dark 30, but it was dark, and rainy, so I couldn't see anything in the potty.

    1. Oh no! If that was right before the race I would have been so upset to not be able to listen to my music!

  8. Interesting that your handheld has just started to bother you. I do like running with my hands free, but I carry my handheld.

    1. Yea it is odd cus it's such a small amount of water to carry.

  9. Ugh to the portapotty! I fear that same thing and have heard too many horror stories. I run with a handheld sometimes but I runfess I've never loved it. I feel like I run slower with it. How's that for an excuse? Haha! Thanks for linking!

  10. Oh wow, someone carrying water for me would be awesome! I've never had anything hurt from carrying a handheld either -- how strange.

I'm good about doing my strength training at home, and it takes less time that way. Still not always easy to squeeze in tho!

I do have to be careful about my phone & ipod in my pockets of my skirts when I stop to use the facilities, so I get that, too!

    1. She carried water for me during the last marathon we ran together. We took turns wearing the hydration belt during the first marathon I ran. She's pretty helpful like that!

  11. How funny! I'm reading your post AS I'm eating a mini bag of Sour Patch kids!

  12. I have a softflask water bottle which is really squishy and can be tucked into the waist of whatever I am wearing which has served me well this summer. It's not too bad to hold either as it moulds to your hand, unlike the hard bottles.

I haven't don't much strength training either. Once I've ran my half marathon I'm going to make sure I do more!

    1. I would like that soft flask. I'll have to check that out!

  13. I'm not a fan of handhelds, I feel like they hinder my running. So I was pretty glad I found out about the Simple Hydration bottle that hooks to my flipbelt. My runfession would be that I haven't been doing any strength training. I can't even recall the last time I did.

    1. I've tried a hydration belt before and it was just too heavy for me, even with only one bottle attached. I didn't know that there was an attachment for the flipbelt though.

  14. I have that same worry about dropping things in the toilet. Hasn't happened yet, knock on wood.

  15. Hydration is always an issue for me. I have been using a handheld, but for the really long runs, I take my Camelbak. This is weird, though - I feel like I always have bad runs with my Camelbak (superstitious I know). I did a 20 miler last Spring in loops so that I could just change out handhelds rather than take my jinxed Camelbak. If you find the perfect hydration solution, you let me know!

    1. I thought I had found the perfect solution with the handheld but for some reason it's just not working any more!

  16. oh wow I am always so scared of dropping something in the portopotty at a disney race when it is so early and so dark!

    1. It is very dark during Disney races! They need to get more light in those port o pottys. I try to always use one on the end if I can help it.

  17. Ah, you sister would deserve a big prize for carrying your water for you! I lost my Roo back when it fell out of my gym bag somewhere .... not in a potty though!

    1. This last marathon she wore her hydration vest and we just both drank out of it when we needed water and weren't near a water stop. Water stops are pretty plentiful at Disney races so I don't remember needing her water too often.

  18. Yep, 5-6 miles pretty much sums up my LSD for the summer. So sad, really...

  19. My handheld water bottle hurts my arm/shoulder, too! You wouldn't think it would matter so much, but it does make a difference. I guess it's why I keep going back to belts.

It's so hard to run long in the summer. 5 miles is honestly sometimes all I can muster, too!

    1. I tried a belt dduring my first marathon and just couldn't do it. It was too heavy and pushed on my bladder falsely making me think I had to make a potty stop!

  20. I am scared of dropping things in the toilet too! Back in July when I met Karen for a hike in Shenandoah Nat'l Park, I stopped on the way home to get something to eat at Sheetz. All I brought into Sheetz was my wallet and my single car key. It was not on my key ring anymore because I tied it to my shoe while we were hiking. Well, I went to the bathroom and as I turned around to flush the toilet, I simultaneously flushed AND dropped me key!!!! IT ALMOST FELL IN THE FLUSHING TOILET BUT I CAUGHT IT!!!! My heart was beating out of my chest. All I could think about is how the hell would've I gotten home if I flushed my key down the toilet? I was 3 hrs from home....

    1. I actually know someone who this happened to except her ending was quite different. She flushed her key at a Sheetz in PA and her parents had to come from NJ with her spare one.

  21. I am not a fan of carrying water when I run. I hate the constant "ga-chunk-ga-chunk" of the sloshing water. If I wear it on a belt, it seems to always twist around (and leak onto my clothing). If I carry it in my hand, I have to constantly switch back and forth from one hand to the other. I'm learning to like the hydration vest...the water bottles still slosh around, but they are out of my hands and away from my waist.

  22. LOL!!!! I too fear my stuff will dump in the toilet! I runfess that I haven't been running. Does that count? LOL!

  23. Funny flashlight story! I'm afraid I'll drop something in someday. My friend dropped her eyeglasses in the toilet, but not while running.

  24. LOL about the dark portapotties. Though I have never had to use them in the dark, dropping something is definitely a fear !

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ok so portapotties. I'd rather pee in the woods, thankyouverymuch.

But handhelds -- I was just talking about this with someone. I've never had a handheld but I worry I would feel too unbalanced. Plus I like having my hands free for fuel, photos, music changes, etc. I use a vest and much prefer it to the waist belt.

  26. Oh I have the same fears about dropping my phone in the toilet because I'm holding it when I run. And I'm totally with you about running with a bottle. Something about it sloshing around annoys me. I went with a belt when I was training for longer races.

  30. HA! I worry about the porta potty too- I mean how many things can we hold and squat and hold.........
