Weekly Wrap.....On the run...April 17

Wow, I can't believe how fast April is going.  I really thought April would drag on because we have no Holidays or long weekends this year, but surprisingly it is just whizzing by.  Also, since our March was SO windy here, I thought April would bring us lots of showers. We had a few days of rain but I think that is behind us and the warm weather has definitely approached!

I haven't done any real running since the April Fools Race we did the first weekend of the month. That's understandable since I don't have any races in the near future that I need to be training for and I 've been having that foot pain from a pair of dress shoes I wore a few weeks back. I thought I would have been over that by now but I figured a few more days of rest wouldn't hurt.  However,

I have been keeping up with my stretches, walking, and riding bike ( I got in 10 bike miles this week).

I did get out this Saturday because the weather was just WAY too nice not to.  I was suppose to meet someone at the trail to run but there was some miscommunication and they did not come.  I was already at the trail anyway and I had some new music on my ipod I was eager to listen to so I just decided that I would run by myself. I figured I'd do my usual 4 miles.

As I set out, I already could tell I was WAY over dressed. I had shorts on and my Disney Princess Glass Slipper Challenge shirt but really should have worn a tank top.  Our weather here got really hot, really fast!  My plan was to run two miles up and two miles back without stopping.

Right before mile 2 I JUST HAD to stop  and re-lace part of my shoes. The tightness was just killing my feet. I didn't end up stopping my Garmin while I was doing this because quite honestly I didn't know if I was going to be able to run the two miles back anyway and figured my time would already be shot.

But as I made it to the two mile turn around point and started running the other way, there was a breeze blowing and that cooled things down a bit. Okay, I got this I thought. Dang, I should have stopped my Garmin when I stopped to fiddle with my shoes earlier. So I try to pick up speed to make up some time.  At this point I could not deny how bad my feet were hurting. It apparently wasn't the laces that were giving me pain, It was that same foot problem from the dress shoes.   My "run all the way"  turned into a "run-walk", which then turned into a "walk the entire last mile".

Normally I would have just pushed through the run so I could have a decent time to record on my training log, but this time I thought. "what's the point".  If I don't want to record this run I don't have to.  Not all runs are about how fast or how far you go. Some are just about getting out there in the beautiful weather and enjoying your music. Apparently that's what this run was about for me!  -M

  1. Oh my gosh, if I didn't record my less-than stellar runs, I'd barely have any recorded! I put them all in my training journal; for me, I still like seeing the miles add up, even when they're slow. Sorry your foot is still bothering you so much, though - that stinks.

    1. Actually, I've never had a run that I didn't record (unless I forgot). If I start and I finish, it counts!

  2. Ugh to the foot pain. I hope it calms down fast. Good idea to take it easy!

It was really warm here this weekend and while I love it, it makes running a bit challenging when you're not used to it!

    1. I have not been wearing uncomfortable shoes since that one time so I am really hoping this pain calms down.

Yea, we have had some warm days but this was just HOT and I think it was a shock to the system!

  3. I'm sorry about your foot pain! I have not been running much myself. I have 4 miles total for April. May try to run tomorrow with hubby!

  4. Sorry that you're still having foot pain and that your run didn't go great. But I am glad you got out there to enjoy the beautiful weather!

    1. It was certainly beautiful but I think I picked the wrong time of day to run cus it was way too hot!

  5. I am so sorry you're dealing with foot pain! So frustrating. But you tried your best, and sometimes that's all we can ask for. Hopefully the pain eases up soon!

  6. I agree, April is flying by! It's my last uninterrupted month of school (we start testing in May), so I feel like I'm cramming everything in before time for instruction starts to fade!

You're right - some runs aren't about speed or distance. They're just about...running!

    1. We have 2 weeks of testing in April so I think that breaks up the routine a bit. I think May is also gonna fly by!

  7. Oh, I hope your foot is OK. Your Garmin data is not as important as your foot!

  8. I hate telling my training log when I have a bad run. But they can't all be great. I hope your foot is alright! Sorry to hear the pain is still lingering. That's got to be very frustrating!

    1. It's frustrating because I recently got over a legitimate injury and now I'm having this stupid pain that is not even running related!

  9. The pain is at my big toes. I think it stems from not having an adequate toe box on my dress shoes. That's been weeks ago though and I'm still feeling the pain.

  10. Hopefully your foot pain will start to go away soon! It's so frustrating when a weird pain hangs on like that! I say even if a run is less than stellar it counts. I like seeing that I got out there and did something even though it may not have been the "best" run.

  11. I'm so sorry you are still dealing with foot pain. That stinks, but hopefully it will be resolved soon. Maybe sticking to the bike for a while would be a better option than trying to run. I do record all my runs, but I am a data nerd!

  14. Talk about weather getting really hot really fast! We had spring in winter, and now we have summer in spring!

  15. If you want rain, you can move here. Yesterday was the first in quite a few days of rain we're getting this week.

I'm so sorry about your foot pain. I keep a golf ball for the bottom of my feet, and I use my lacrosse ball too. I have one in my bag for work so when I'm sitting, I can massage my feet if they feel tired.

  16. I hope the foot gets better quickly :( I'm glad you were at least able to get out and enjoy the beautiful day and the music. I love reserving some special music for a run, it definitely gets me excited to get out there.

  17. Are you wearing new sneakers? I had terrible pain when I was breaking in my new Nike frees... but now it has gone away. My zumba instructor said that I should have stretched my shoes.

I'm glad you did your run, even if the friend did show up. Some days it's hard for me to run on my own.

  18. It doesn't matter how slow or fast you run as long as you're out there enjoying it. Although it probably wasn't as enjoyable with the foot pain and hope it heals soon. A beautiful weekend in Socal with another week of warm and sunny days :)

  19. Ugh, so sorry to read your foot is still not in tip top shape. I am really careful about the shoes I wear because my feet cramp in the evening or my toes hurt if they were too high or uncomfortable.

I am not a heat person. I would have walked... and recorded it. I stop my garmin if I have to wait to cross the street, but otherwise, I never shut it off. My times might be slow but I like to see the distance and time.

  20. Hey, it's your run! Log it if you want to or don't worry about it! Hope your foot feels better soon. :)

  21. A lot of us are dealing with some foot issues here and there. I do wish it would just go away! You did the right thing, and yes it's not all about the time on the clock.

  22. Sounds like a good idea that you took it easy on that foot- how is it feeling now? I record all my runs, the good, bad and ugly!

  23. The top of my left foot is very sensitive to how I have my shoe tied! That's the foot I fractured and it still has a neuroma. Sometimes I make multiple adjustments to that shoe because it has to be just right. I hope yours stops acting out. Thankfully, runs can be whatever we want them to be. The only pressure comes from ourselves. So, kudos for giving yourself a break. Thanks for linking with us Meranda.

  24. Your second-to-last sentence sums it up perfectly....sometimes it's about getting out there in the beautiful weather. I seldom ever take my watch with me unless it's a long run (and I'm trying to monitor my pace), so I almost always run based on how my body is feeling. I don't want a bunch of numbers and "stats" telling me if it's a good run or not ;-)
