The week I broke the rules

Happy Friday folks! I am pleased to say that I was very energetic this week and fit in a lot of workouts.  Unfortunately  “I broke a fitness rule.”

You are probably wondering what that was.  I’d also like to ask who came up with this rule anyway?   Well, before I get into that, I want to share What all I got into this week. I know this might not be significant for some people but I am just proud that I fit it all in and remembered to log it all.

1. Sunday I woke up to a beautiful day so I decided to take a 7 mile run in the morning. That afternoon I took my yellow lab for a two mile walk. Since Baylee got shaved last week, I thought it was time to shave Belle and this made her tired. That evening I did another two mile run around town. When I arrived home, I had a text from my sister asking if I wanted to go for a walk. Of course I couldn’t say no, so I met her, and we ended up doing 4 miles.  Total: a 15 mile day. Not too bad!

2. Monday I woke up feeling pretty good considering everything that I did the day before. I ran 5 miles in the morning and that evening is when I broke the rule. I lifted after I already ran that day! We had our Body Pump Launch at our gym. I hadn't lifted for over two weeks and I was definitely feeling it afterwards. After class I got a phone call from another Instructor asking if I could team teach class in the morning with her since we both knew the new music. Again, I couldn’t say no.   Total: 5 miles and taught one class.

Teaching body pump class!

3. Tuesday morning I taught Body Pump again.  I taught Body Pump twice within a 24 hour period, another rule that I should not have broken. That afternoon I ran 4 miles. Then it was back to the gym to teach Spin class.  Total: 4 miles and taught TWO classes

4. Wednesday I woke up feeling sore, which was no surprise. I had made plans to meet a friend for the afternoon. We went on a 3 mile walk then went for lunch. On the way home I stopped at the mall and got a massage and did some shopping. When I got home, I was feeling much better and decided to do an easy two miles. Another rule I probably broke, getting a massage then going for a run afterwards. But in my defense, it was only my neck and upper back. Then I met my sister for dinner and we went for a two mile walk.  Total: 7 miles and some "me time",

Teaching body pump. I must be going so fast that it made the photo a bit blurry..lol

5. Thursday I woke up and actually took a body pump class instead of teaching it. I then went home and walked with Belle for a mile. I then taught a Spin class in the evening.  afterwards I again walked with my sister for another 2 miles.  Total: 3 miles and taught one class.

Friday-REST! I am meeting my friend for a girl’s night. We have not seen each other in a while so it’ll be nice to catch up.  -L

We are linking up with the gals from the Friday 5.

  2. i'm kinda confused - what rule exactly did you break??? I lift all the time after I run, depending on the day and what I have going on. Typically my personal training days are also easy run days. Hmm...

    1. Running and lifting on the same day.I've heard that you shouldn't do it, but always wondered why.

    2. I don't run and lift on the same day because I really want to see gains from my lifting and lift HEAVY- which I can't do if I am also running. Basically, I like to just focus on one or the other- lifting or running. Then my muscles have enough time to recover before the next workout. But I think it depends on your goals. If you are doing an easy run, not lifting super heavy, or your body just recovers fast enough between the time you do your workouts, then maybe doing both on the same day isn't so bad. But I try to reap the biggest gains from my workouts and for me that is allowing myself the time to just focus on one or the other and allowing for recovery.

Now have I broken this rule? Prob once or twice. :) Don't worry, none of us are going to fitness hell!

  3. I'm just over here breaking the rule about mileage building and speedwork at the same time. Nothin' to see here. Move along, folks. ;o)

  4. All the exercise in this post made me tired...from my couch. Lol

You certainly had a full week!!

  5. I run and lift on the same day all the time. I have actually heard that it can be good to do strength training after a hard run because then you can really make your easy days easy. I have done Body Pump classes close together before, but that was back when I was taking classes all the time and it didnt leave me sore. I always wondered how instructors could tech the class multiple days in a row!

    1. That's good to know. It doesn't happen often but sometimes if there is someone sick, you may have to pick up a class for them or do Launch like we did.You just go lighter on your weights the next time around.

  6. Hah! This week I ran on back-to-back days, both longer than usual, and I have a race on Sunday. I certainly broke a few rules there but it was all in the name of seizing the day.

    1. Yep same here. I knew that I had to teach in the evenings but it was too nice out during the day to not go for a run.

  7. I often run and lift on the same day. I don't listen to rules, I just do what feels right :)

  8. A great week of workouts - running and lifting together notwithstanding!

  9. I didn't know that was a fitness rule to not lift and run the same day! I actually read an article once that said that was the way you should do it. I'm sure you can find an article for every argument! Just do what works for you.

  10. That is a lot in one week! You deserve the rest day :). That's so cool you teach body pump. I really enjoy it.

    1. It is such a great total body workout. But I can definitely feel it when I haven't taught or taken it in awhile.

  11. Dang woman, forget about breaking rules, that was a lot of exercise in one week! But hey, if you have the energy for it, then I say go for it!

  12. I don't think it's bad to run and lift the same day. But lifting twice within 24 hours is tough on the body. But you have to take advantage of the energy when it's there :) I am glad you're feeling good and resting today!

  13. Question - can you bottle up some of that energy & stamina & send it my way? :)

  14. amazing week of workouts! i've run and lifted on the same day plenty of times before and i think it's all about listening to your body and doing what feels right for you on that day.

    1. Yep, that is a good Point. I did feel good but I really didn't have a choice either.

  15. That sounds like a fantastic week! I need to figure out a way to get in mid-day workouts... sometimes it would be nice to find some kind of pick-me-up during work. Have a great weekend! :)

  16. meh - who can follow silly arbitrary "rules?" :) great week!

  17. Wow! That is a lot of work outs in one day! AMAZING!! But I say you didn't break the rules... I often do weights, runs and zumba all in one day, because it's what works for my schedule.

    1. Thanks. When you do it all in one day you don't have to feel guilty taking a day off later in the wk.

  19. Sometimes you have to strike when the iron's hot. What an inspiring week!

  20. I do a short run before weights and keep my long runs on their own day. Looks like lots of great workouts for you in one week :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, I usually do shorter runs after or before I lift. Doesn't making lifting feel as strenuous!

  21. Wait what? Why can't you lift after you run? Lol!

Sounds like you had a crazy busy week!

    1. I always heard it wasn't good, but I never knew why bc I do it and feel just fine.

  22. I think it's okay to lift and run on the same day, although most of the time I try to arrange my week so that doesn't happen.

But where do you get all that energy?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Right now I'm running and doing PT exercises afterwards. I don't know if that's the same as lifting, but it's still strength training. I'm actually feeling stronger, so I'm not sure if that's a rule or just guidance and determine how you feel.

    1. Sounds like you are doing good. My sister would sometimes run after her PT as well.

  24. Well deserved rest on Friday, that was a crazy week. If I have a lighter run day, I will do some weight lifting, but it is usually upper body.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hmm, I've heard the opposite, that you SHOULD lift on your hard run days to keep your hard workouts away from your easy and rest days. Now that I'm focusing on strength training, I usually always lift and run the same day. Works for me!

    ReplyDelete
  26. LOL! We all break rules all the time. If run and lift are the worst rules you break, I would say you are in pretty good shape!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Rules are meant to be broken, right? Nice week of workouts! Walking with yours sis = priceless.

    1. Exactly! It's always nice to take a walk to chat about our day.

  28. Wow, what a week!! You really earned that rest day. Sometimes our bodies are feeling great and that means we can break a rule or two, as long as we don't do it too often ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. I didn't know about that rule! When I was running, I did usually save strength workouts for non-running days, but only because it helped me schedule it all in! Rule or not, you had a great week!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. BodyPump from Monday night to Tuesday morning would be brutal... BodyPump 97 even worse! Such a tough release! I usually try to run before Pump, but it's largely weather-dependent (because I can't stand the treadmill).
