Limited Edition Gear

I generally get a race jacket at every marathon I run. I have one from WDW, Boston, Big Sur, and Marine Corp just to name a few.

I've been wearing my Boston Jacket a lot lately, probably because it is a windbreaker and perfect for this time of year. I wore it on one of the long walks my sister and I had the other day when this conversation came up.

Even though we both REALLY liked the Boston Marathon jacket for this year ( the teal and pink for women and teal and black for men), I am REALLY grateful that I was able to get the classic blue and yellow jacket from the year I ran it (2013).

When the 2016 jacket design for the Boston Marathon was first released, I saw that there was a lot of controversy over it. Especially from those who were first time runners.  I guess I would be a bit bummed if I only ever got one chance to run Boston and I thought the jacket was hideous.

So anyway, getting back to the discussion we had about the jacket. Why can't large races ( Like Boston) who choose to change the color or design of the jacket each year have two options for runners. They should ALWAYS have the classic blue and yellow jacket available for purchase.

People who are running this race for the first time or for their only time will probably want this.   They can still have the different colored jackets available each year as a "Limited Edition".  This way Runners can choose if they want the Classic Jacket or the Limited Edition Jacket. I bet you those who are running Boston for the first time might even buy BOTH. Resulting in more money for Adidas (who makes the jacket). What do you think?  -L

  1. I think you have a great idea! I'm sure there are a MYRIAD of reasons they only have one jacket each year, but on paper I definitely like your idea! In 2009 I got the classic blue and yellow. In 2014 it was orange, which I did not like at first. But it actually started to grow on me! The teal and pink choice for Boston '16 was... interesting.

    1. That's nice that you were able to get two different ones.

  2. I definitely agree with this sentiment! The classic of a particular race is important to some folks, and then those who can (and want) to get their limited version, that is then something "special" to add to the bunch!

  3. In theory it sounds like a great idea but I can only imagine that it might be an ordering and then pick up nightmare to have more versions of the same apparel, and in different sizes.

  4. That is a really great idea. I could see veteran runners loving how different this year's color scheme was, but I really love the blue and yellow and if I were a first timer I'd want one. It's so classic. I mean, how could they go wrong offering this option? It's still more money for them! ;)

  5. I totally agree with you - there should be options.
I haven't heard of the talk about this years jacket - now I have to go google it to see what it looks like

  6. Funny, I was just reading a Boston race recap and thought the teal/pink jackets, while cute, were unremarkable. I'd prefer to have the classic colors first.

    1. I am happy to have the classic blue, but I did like this year's color.

  7. The classic should always be an option, and why stick pink on the women's jacket? I like pink, but I don't like having it as the only option. I like the teal/black combo better from this year.

  8. I never knew finisher jackets were available! that is way cool! I think they should stay the original colors, they go perfectly! and whenever I see blue and yellow, my brain automatically thinks Boston Marathon.

  9. I think having both options would be smart. Runners would definitely spend the money on both, so it's not like they'd be losing money producing both colors. I liked this year's colors but one year they had an orange color I didn't like at all. And I wouldn't want to buy a jacket from a year I didn't run it just to get a color I did like...for a race this huge, I think the classic colors should always be in rotation.

    1. I agree w you. I like the teal but did not like the orange. That would have been nice to have the classic as an option that yr.

  10. I definitely agree with you. I feel bad for those that ran this year that did not like the jacket's colors. Definitely would be great if they had both options.

    1. Yes it would. Because most runners it is a one and done.

  11. I need to start collecting race jackets - I only have t-shirts.

  12. I also love collecting race jackets for my big marathons and was shocked to see that the London Marathon jacket was identical to the Boston Marathon jacket except for the logo. It seems really weird that Adidas can't come up with different colors for the two races. The traditional Boston colors are great for a jacket and the idea of them offering two jackets would be really nice. However, I think it is just luck of the draw if you get one that you like. I personally liked our purple on from 2015, but would not have wanted the light teal this year as my Boston jacket. However, I love it for London. Is that weird?

    1. I did notice too that the jackets were the same for both Boston and London this year. Did Adidas not think that perhaps some runners would be doing both races??? But in any case.... I personally really liked the Boston Jacket last year and in 2014. But I happen to like those color combos!

  13. If I ran Boston, that's the only jacket is wear EVER. Maybe even in summer. ;)

I agree- one year the Boston jacket was orange. Not a fan!! I would have been really upset.

    1. I was not a fan of the orange one either. Glad I didn't run it that year...haha.

  14. I didn't know they changed the colors every year! If I ever ran Boston, I would definitely want the classic. And also would never take it off.

  15. I completely agree! For people who run it the first time, they're going to want the classic blue and yellow jacket so it should always be offered. Then have the colored special edition ones as well. Like you said, I'm sure people would order both, so they would only be making more money. Personally, I would be so disappointed if the year I ran it I wasn't able to get the jacket in the iconic blue and yellow.

  16. If I were to run Boston, I'd want the classic colors. The real and pink were too 80s for me.

    1. I never thought of that, but now that you mentioned it, I can see that.

  17. I get your point. Maybe they hired a new designer this year and decided to try something new, if feedback isn't good they will probably go back to things as you and others want.. just guessing!
I must say, getting a jacket at every race, where do you keep them all I bet you have a huge collection:) I run out of space just from the race shirts I get at them, LOL

  18. My first Boston jacket was hideous (1998). It was black and yellow with some white, and only in unisex size - I got it anyway. I didn't go back up to run Boston again until 2010 and I got the classic blue and yellow one. I really like it a lot! I would love for them to offer non-dated shirts, too. Mine are mostly worn out, but I don't want a shirt dated with a year I didn't run it...

  19. I think they should have both--totally agree. I also really hope they have teal again the year that I finally get to run it!

  20. I was lucky enough to get the blue/yellow version the first year I ran Boston (2009). Because it was so similar the following year (aqua/yellow) I didn't get one. I suppose if they only ever offered the classic colors the repeat runners might not buy?? I'm not sure why two versions is not feasible. Although after seeing them for sale at TJ Maxx I guess they have an overstock problem.

  22. Much as I love pink, if I ran Boston I'd want Boston colors!

  23. COMPLETELY agree on having both a limited edition and the classic every year!!! I would totally buy both if I were ever lucky enough to run Boston!!!
