Running Highlights you wont want to miss

I have hit a huge milestone this month already!   Remember over Christmas break I said that one of my goals was to catch up on all my magazine subscriptions?  Yea, well that did not happen.

However, I am proud to say that I have already read from cover to cover the March issue of both Runner's World and Women's Running magazine. This is HUGE for me. I not only read two magazines cover to cover but they are CURRENT ones too!

In the past when I would sit down with a magazine, I would get a few pages into it and then realize that it was an issue I had already read. To prevent this from happening, I've come up with a new method for reading my magazines.

When I'm done with the magazine, on the inside cover I will write down the most important things I learned, the things that spoke to me or inspired me, or articles I want to share with someone.

When I was reading Runner's World on a regular basis I admit that I skipped a lot of the articles because I just couldn't relate to them. I couldn't relate to the athlete who was running a 2:25 marathon but for some reason I read every article this month.

Here is what sparked my interest in the March issue.

- Interviews with the non-elites who ran the Olympic trials. These were not the Meb's and the Shalane's of running. They were just your normal everyday moms and dads who are very speedy. They knew they would not qualify but they were just honored to been running.

-The injury Guide (knowing if you are at risk for being injured)

-A running shirt that improves your posture ( I should look into this)

-Scott Kelly, an astronaut who will be running in space (on a treadmill of course)

I have forgotten how much I enjoyed Women's Running magazine. I can usually relate to more of the articles in the magazine.

Here were the highlights from the March issue.

-I enjoy checking out the community board page. I always like to see if I recognize anyone from Instagram or twitter!

Vintage medal disney marathon 1994

- A Brief History of Racing, this was a great article that documented the changes from the 1960's to today. Of course I was thrilled to see the Disney World Marathon mentioned!

-Pre-race Provisions- In this article bloggers and writers share what their "go to" pre-race breakfast is. I had to check it out to se if I recognized anyone and I did recognize one of the bloggers.

-A Shoes guide- I always love learning about shoes!

-Training plans ( I may take one of these and modify it to my own needs).

I am really going to make more of an effort to get these magazines read in a timely fashion.

Do any of these articles seem interesting to you? -M

PS. When I finished writing this post I went out to check my mail and guess what, I received the April issue of RW. Now lets see if I can get that read before May!

  1. That piece about Disney brought a smile to my face. Only 7.000 runners ran that first marathon?!? Imagine if Disney only allowed 7,000 people to run their races now. Registration would be even more competitive and stressful than it already is!

  2. I also received my RW in my mailbox yesterday. I tend to let my magazines sit for a while, but usually I read more in the summer when I am sitting by the pool. The stories about the non Olympic level runners in the qualifying race was really interesting to me as well.

    1. I hoping to catch up on more magazines during the summer as well. It's hard for me to read by the pool because Baylee does so much splashing!

  3. There is a running shirt that improves your posture?! I should look into that too! These articles sound great!

    1. I have a stack in my magazine rack that have issues from 2015 and 2014 and if I look hard enough I bet there are some from 2013 I haven't read either..lol

  5. I think I'm going to let my RW subscription lapse when it expires in May and subscribe to Women's Running for a change. Sounds like an interesting magazine.

  6. I just finished my copy of RW as well. I pulled out the pages with those posture shirts and other fun gear to look into more. I was just thinking how I don't relate to those stories about the 2:25 marathoner and am glad they are doing more real world runner stories. My favorite article was a few issues back about Mirna Valerio who is 250 pounds and runs ultras. What an inspirational story she has.

  7. Nice! I haven't read either of these yet but I need to look into them. I'm intrigues by the article about non-elites that ran the Olympic Trials. I assumed they were all elites. And I definitely need to look into that injury guide.

    1. I generally don't care to read about super speedy people but that was a nice article.

  9. I look forward to jumping right into both of those when they come too. I am in the middle of Runner's World right now. Sometimes women's running is a lot of ads

    1. My intentions are always to read them as soon as they come but somehow they get pushed to the side!

  10. I like reading articles that compare and contrast running "back then" and today. It's amazing to see what people trained in even for pre-WWII Olympics and now today.

    1. Yea, it was interesting to read that back in the 50's the girls on the track team were more about their hair and lipstick then whether or not they could run..lol

  11. I subscribed to Runners World for 6-7 years and last September I decided to stop the subscription. I kinda read them cover to cover but on the articles that didn't hold too much appeal I only skimmed them.
But even though I cancelled mine I still enjoy inspiring stories. We had a lot of athletes from Utah in the trial, one is one of the men now going tothe Olympics. But a few were ladies who have families, children and busy lives who decided they wanted to go after the dream to qualify for the Olympic trials, I found I really enjoyed reading the stories that came out locally about them. They were so inspiring! While I am not sure if I will start any of my own subscriptions again my library has all of them both I could pick up and read. Or I can go online at anytime and read them digitally for free. You just reminded me that I should do that more often! Enjoy your magazines! !!

    1. I keep forgetting about magazines online. Sometimes it's nice to have an actual copy though!

  12. I always stay current with my Women's Running magazine but I am SOOOOO far behind on Runners World - I actually canceled the subscription & I still am so far behind. That one just seems over my head for the most part.

  13. I enjoy WR a bit better and will probably stick with that subscription after this one expires!

  14. I love this system! I'll have to try it out as well because I have a horrible time keeping up with my subscriptions.

    1. Yea, I thought it would help me remember which issues I already started reading!

  15. I agree with Gretchen. I love this system. I need to renew my RW subscription, but Women's Running sometimes has the best articles. I loved the Disney bit too and enjoyed the breakfast article. Its always so interesting to see what ordinary everyday people are doing to improve and I love reading about what people eat pre, during and post race. Happy reading!

  16. I glanced through the new issue of Runners World while Paul was waiting in line at the pharmacy. My favorite section is the Ask Miles where people ask running etiquette questions. I don't know why, but I love any kind of etiquette questions!

  18. That's a great feeling! One of my Christmas gifts was two new magazines - Southern Living and Bon Appetit. I'm trying to get through them the same month as well. Re: shoe guides, they're always my least favorite part LOL. :) Glad that someone enjoys them because I always quickly flip past them. -C

  19. The article on the non-elites running the trials was my favorite from that RW issue! I usually devour my magazines immediately and then am bummed I have to wait another month for another.
