Finding the right ones

I don't quite remember why, but when I first got my I-pod several years ago the earbuds that came with it just didn't work for me (or maybe they broke) I just don't remember. But I do remember being on a very specific search for the right earbuds.

Here are the ones I've tried.

1. Snug buds - I know many runners swear by these. My sister has had several pairs. They seem to go static-y after a while but because you can return them with in a year, she's been able to replace them. I got a pair for Christmas one year and honestly, I hated them.  First off, I don't like things sticking that far in my ear (so that was the first problem). The second problem was that because they were so far in my ear, I felt like I was stuck in a bubble. I could not hear anything ( and I literally mean anything) that was going on in the world around me.  This is good for someone who wants to block out EVERY noise around them but I like to be aware of what is going on while still listening to music.

2. Because I don't like things completely in my ear, I thought I would try this over the ear model. After one run, I've determined these things were useless. They would not stay put.

3. The following Christmas I was hoping for a pair of Yurbuds since I heard so many great things about them. Turns out I got a pair of nice Sony earbuds. I REALLY liked these. These were no fancy shape like Yurbuds or Snugbuds, they were just the round disc shape. Over the years I had lost the little foam cover that goes over the ear pieces but I continued to wear them and they were perfect.

Until...... The day I crushed them in my car seat.  I suppose you need a visual.

While traveling to and from the trail I put my ipod in the cup holder in my car. Apparently I did not noticed that one of the strands had fallen in between my seats, When I moved my seat to get out of the car I completely crushed the earbud. It was beyond repair.  So now my search had started all over again.

You would think I could find the same Sony pair, but oh no. That would be too easy.

4. My sister decided that she wasn't crazy about her Yurbuds and offered to give them to me. Turns out I wasn't crazy a bout them either. It was the shape that I just couldn't get to stay in my ear.

5. last year for Christmas I had bought Scott a pair of the wireless earbuds from Sharper Image. I thought maybe these would work but they are Bluetooth and I don't believe they work with my ipod.

So what did I finally find?

A pair of cheapo JVC earbuds from Best Buy. Seriously, these were the only ones I could find that were shaped like my old Sony ones. They we only $10 and I've had them now for the majority of my training cycle and they work like a charm!

Tell me what worked and didn't work for you?  -M

  1. I use the Phillips ones that wrap around your ears. I like them because on me, they stay put- especially if I have a hairband on. Something about the hairband keeps them from sliding! They don't last forever but they are also extremely inexpensive so when a pair is shot I just buy I new pair.

  2. The only ones that I wear for running are Yurbuds! They're so comfortable for me. At work though I wear a cheap pair from Phillips that are really great for listening for a long period of time.

  3. I don't like when the headphones go so far up my hear that it feels as if my head was underwater.... I totally get what you mean with that!! Once I completely forgot my mp3 player and my headphones and had to use my fiancés from the emergency running kit. I put the headphones in one ear only, the head underwater feeling was making me dizzy.

I started using the ones that came with my iphone last time, the new kind, and I love them! I have bought a replacement since I broke two pairs already. They fit my hear perfectly and I love the controls on the right ear. how do earphones find their way into place that can shred them to pieces, I don't know! I completely shredded mine in the space between my desk chair and my desk.

  4. I use Yurbuds but I don't like how easily the covers fall off. I lost one right before my 5k in October, and when I tried to replace that size, the website was out of stock, but didn't advertise that fact.

  5. I feel your pain about that "in a bubble" feeling! My biggest problem with headphones is when they keeping falling out of my ears. I have a pair of Ironman earbuds which stay in better - but really they are just regular earbuds with a rubber covering that is less slippery. And the rubber coverings slip off the earbuds fairly easily, too!

  6. I looked and looked and looked and I'm now using Yurbuds, but I do agree with many that the covers fall off too easily. It is really annoying!

  7. I went through a search too, it seems like none of them are exactly right. But I'm currently running with yur buds and their the best thing I've found so far.

  8. I have a pair of Yurbuds - the Inspire for Women ones. I'll be honest, I bought a pair at a Disney expo and while they supposedly fit the bud to my ear I still couldn't get them to stay. When I bought the Inspire for Women set it had two different sizes of buds to try and I found that sizing down made a huge difference! I'd recommend trying another size of bud as that may help them to stay put for you.

  9. I know this is extremely rare, but the iPod/iPhone earbuds work perfectly for me! Whenever I try to go to another pair by a different brand, they never stay in.

  10. I loved my yurbuds - customer service worked with me to get the perfect fit. However, after my second wireless set died, I have started a search for a wireless set that actually stays in, works for more than 6 months, and it comfortable.......

  11. This is so interesting - especially because my husband is looking for some for Christmas & I almost got the Yurbuds - I think I'm going to look further now.

  12. I very rarely use earbuds while I'm running, but if I do I just use the ones that came with my iPhone. I HATE them because they constantly slip out but I just haven't ever looked for a different pair.

  13. I like the Phillips ones that wrap around your ears. The buds just don't work for me.

  15. I have such a hard time finding earbuds that I like. I need the ones that wrap around my ear otherwise they fall out! Luckily I don't usually run with them so it's not really an issue.

  16. My husband has issues finding the right ear buds. He wants wireless, but he can never find the "right" ones, so the search continues. I just use the ones that came with my iPod. My favorite.

  17. I have still never been able to find any I really like. They are always uncomfortable and keep falling out. I will keep searching!

  18. I found a pair of Phillips earbuds that I love, and they don't carry them in the store anymore. Had to find a pair on amazon. Less than $20, but they work great! But it definitely took me trial and error on a few to find ones that lasted a full marathon!

  19. I have a huge problem with earbuds--I sweat so much that I kill them. I had some Sennheiser ones that I loved but they no longer sell them. Now I have a pair of YurBuds that I love. I bought a newer pair but they don't sound as good. I hear the company got bought out and quality has suffered.

  20. Ugh. I feel your pain. I tried many of the options you described. Yurbuds worked for me. Until I lost one ear thing in Vegas. Like Wendy, I replaced them, but they're not as good. Boo. Thanks for linking up!

  21. I used some from Skull Candy for several years until the pooped out. I bought some Yurbuds and they seem to be working well. I have small ears and I like that they make some for smaller-eared folk like me. They rarely fall out and seem to sound good so far. I only wear them occasionally while I'm on the treadmill. But so far, so good!

  22. Oh man...so sorry you crushed your favorite set of headphones, but I'm glad you found a new pair that works for you!!

  23. OMG I can't STAND earbuds being in my ears. It gives me the heebie jeebies. I only wear the ones that came with my iPhone 4S. They fit comfortably and don't go all the way in. Plus I can control the volume from the little toggle thingy, which is fabulous.

  24. I have been using yurbuds for years. Love them!

  25. I always say I have weird shaped ears, because I cannot stand much stuck in them, and most buds just fall out.
You know, I bought a cheaper pair a several years back I think they are a Sony brand, the kind that half loop around the ear and the bud doesn't actually get held inside the ear itself, I think I paid $12 and they have a quick volume control switch on the wire that hits about chest length and they are seriously the best. Sometimes you don't have to pay big bucks to get something that works, LOL

  26. For years, I used the small sized Skull Candy but they shorted out once or twice a year. I went through many, many pairs and thankfully they weren't too expensive. And then I tried Yurbuds which I liked at first because they have great sound quality. But, they make their own wind noise especially cycling. Maybe it's the shape of my ear? And now the little covers won't stay on. I find that irritating. Sorry to go on and on! :)

  27. I pretty much never listen to music when I'm running, so I don't even own any sort of earbuds LOL. So, I'm no help.
