Surf -n- Santa 10 Miler at Virginia Beach and Our Gift Winner

When I found out I was able to get off work to run the Surf N Santa I was thankful because that meant that I would have completed all the J and A races for the year 2013- Virginia is for Lovers 14k, Shamrock Marathon, Crawlin Crab half marathon, Wicked 10k, and now Surf n Santa. Even though you do not get anything additional (which I think you should, like an additional medal?) It's more of an accomplishment for myself. Someone did say you get a lunch cooler (I guess that's better than nothing).
As excited I was to be able to run this race, I knew it was going to be a cold one. The day before the race it was 77 degrees. I thought "wow" maybe we'll luck out this year with good weather. Not so much. I woke up to rain and wind with temperatures in the 40's.
Prior to the race date my friend told me that he would be willing to pace me to have a great time. I told him I wasn't sure how I would do considering I haven't ran that distance in a while and I've been dealing with this blister on my foot. But after waking up and seeing the weather, my blister was the least of my worries for sure. I was so cold and miserable throughout the whole race, my blister did not bother me at all. Even though the conditions were awful, I still did a great time. I do believe it was due to my motivation, my good friend that was willing to pace me.

My Race Friends
He was planning on pacing another friend of his so I wasn't sure if we were planning on sticking together the whole time. For this reason, I chose not to run with my ipod. I have never ran a race without listening to my music but he assured me that I wouldn't need it because we would be talking plenty during our run.  He did not disappoint! We chatted the whole time and he pushed me when I wasn't feeling like I could go any further.
The last two miles the wind finally settled and the rain stopped. That's when I got a little pep in my step and decided to push forward and finish strong. After passing my friends, that's the only time I wished I had my ipod, because I didn't have anyone to chat with until the end.

So overall I'd say worse race (because of the weather) but best time (because of my motivation). Finished the 10 miler in 1:22:55.
I placed 15th in my age group and my overall place was 257 out of 1889.

Here are a few fun pics from the expo the day before.
This Christmas tree was full of inspirational running quotes.

Some cool running ornaments
One of them said "All I want for Christmas is a new PR"!

Have you ever run a race in inclimate weather? If so how did it go and what was your motivation to continue?

  1. Congrats on a great race! That time is fantastic given the rotten weather. You are now ready for any race conditions if you could push through during wind and rain! And yes, you should have gotten an extra medal!

  7. Great job! My worst was pouring rain for a 2 mile race that they cut to 1 mile. The temps weren't bad though. Cold wise, Shamrock 2013. ;-)

  10. Congrats!!! Awesome time!
I think I'm getting used to running in less-than-ideal conditions. In 2012, I did a Warrior Dash in a torrential lightning storm and a Super Spartan in another storm that they tell me turned into a tornado (I saw no funnel cloud.) Earlier this year, I went out in a blizzard and got one of my best times ever.

  11. Congratulations! That area seems to have some pretty good running events! I saw those ornaments at an expo this past weekend too. They're cute, but I just didn't love them.
